Charlie Foxtrot: Vitrual War for Real (a large-scale ArmA II PvP Tournament)

Recommended Posts

Gentlemen (& women),

its time to lock and load for the first full Charlie Foxtrot Campaign after our successful 6 week beta campaign & scrims. Sunday the 18th October 2009 will see the first battle of ten in CF1 where the River Stone Inc take on Shashka International in a battle to the last for control over Chernarus. It promises to be a long, bloody hard fought campaign, come be part of it.

Charlie Foxtrot Mod v1.0

As always we had created a mod which tweaks the gameplay to our liking. At present this is only a few config changes but in future will be expanded to included new vehicles, soldiers and islands. Here is a brief overview of the changelog.

*Added CF vehicle configs

*Added CF scripts used by battle map

*Disabled radar from CF vehicles ~ no vehicle/gunner hax

*Disabled parachuting from helos ~ proper tactical use of of helos, paradrops still done via fixed wing drop planes.

*Disabled "command spotting" ~ no command hax

*Reduced CF vehicles fuel amount, (~30min running time land vehicles, ~15min air) ~ Fuel and Ammo now valuable part of Logistics

Charlie Foxtrot Campaign System

On the face of it Charlie Foxtrot can be quite a daunting thing to face however, its really quite simple. A Charlie Foxtrot Campaign lasts for 10 weeks. Battles are fought week by week, gaining territory as you go. At Charlie Foxtrot we have 5 Fronts. A Front is a chain of Objectives (9 in total) linked together. At the start of the campaign each Front starts in the middle along a Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). During a single battle over a Front, Objectives are captured and the battle progresses forward or back depending on which side you are on. In total there are 45 territories up for grabs, the army with the most at the end of the 10 week campaign is declared the winner.

Charlie Foxtrot Battle System

The Charlie Foxtrot system works on a points system. The first army to reach 500 points in an Objective captures it and the fight moves on into the enemy territory. Points can be accumulated in two ways. The first is by occupying the Objective. Secondly you get points for killing the enemy, this includes soldiers and vehicles. You get more points for killing the enemy inside the Objective than outside. All of this gives a highly dynamic gaming experience.

The Battle System also enforces teamwork. The slots i.e primary and secondary weapons, are fixed but there is ammo available so you can pick up extra mags, grenades, smokes or explosives. The point of this is, you will see no Machine Gun totting Sniper-AT Men here. This is a team game, not one for 'Rambo's'.

At this time our focus is directed mainly towards infantry. Infantry make up the vast majority if our player base and as a result we have created a high intensity infantry experience. We do use air transport (fixed wing and rotary) so there are still avenues for fly-boys to take, taking a bird into a hot LZ is an experience not for the faint hearted.

Soldier Loadouts Explained

The loadouts for the soldiers are designed to have each army/unit think about which slots they choose for battle day. Inotherwords, there is a trade off between the role that each soldier is supposed to do on the field and the weapons/abilities that they carry. IN CF, there are no one man Sniper-AA men armies. Each unit depends on its own soldiers to carry out the job as a team. In many cases these will be quite a departure from what you are used too. You might have a 'WTF' moment but we thought quite a bit about the roles we wanted different soldiers types to fill. In addition to this, some of the differences are quite subtle. Taking for example the Officer Soldier type. On the face of it, he carries the exact same loadout as a default CF Rifleman. However, as an officer he has some extras which make it beneficial for COs & TLs to choose this class. For example, the Officer model is quite distinctive. He also has a different marker on the map. These things make him distinguishable for the players thus make it a little easier to follow/find him. In addition to this, the officer also carries a GPS. This makes it a little easier for him to navigate on the fly.

Another new front has been opened for Battle 5 of CF Campaign 1 at Charlie Foxtrot. This week will see the Battle of Shakovka, starting at Zulu 2. This is a golden opportunity to take some fresh soil and spill some more blood. Battle 4 proved to be a very close affair. In the early stages the RS looked in control, capturing Zulu 2. However, just when it looked like the RS would take control of of yet more SI terrain, a swift counter attack which turned into a very closely fought battle overturned the RS gains. However, there was more drama to come as the RS built up momentum in the latter stages of the battle. Given 10 more minutes and they could have seized the day. As it was, the battle ended in a tie, which resulted in SI gaining the initiative. A heart stopping battle all agreed.

I am very interested at this...i just wanna ask you,do you play serious?Like, using compass navigation, gps, leading, covering, various formations and stuff like that?

The competition is serious enough, everyone wants to win. We remove alot of the safety nets regarding navigation so you need some basic nav skills like using a compass yes i suppose. No cross hairs, no 3rd person, no command spotting so its pretty tough for casual players I guess. Some units use formations, some dont, it depends on the unit leader i suppose. The important thing is its organised, orders are given, orders are followed, strategies discussed, its fun.

And is there any chance to try it for free at first?

CF is and always will be free. You only have to pay if you wish to pick a side. Many people wish to pay in their second campaign as they meet people they like to play with and like that security blanket. Many long term veterans go random as they dont care who they play with as they know almost everyone.

Charlie Foxtrot Community Update

So the first official Charlie Foxtrot is drawing to a close. This will be the last battle. Fear not, we will begin CF2 after 3 weeks of Scriming/Testing/Reforming over the Christmas period. CF2 is pencilled into start on January 10th and should do so with no major problems. As mentioned there will be three scrims at the usual times on Sundays. We understand many of you will be AFK from Christmas but if you can come and help get set up for CF2. There are always scrims, regardless of any holidays.

New Scoring System being used for Battle 10

As all of you will be aware, we have been overhauling our battlemap from the ground up over the last 5 weeks or so. We are totally revamping it, many of you will have been following its development in the map release threads. After consultation with both the armies, we will be swapping out the existing scoring system for the new one for Battle 10. This is to help iron out any bugs, test gameplay and to whet you guys whistles for CF2. I really urge you guys to come and play this weekend, it will be exciting. A brief guide as to the scoring system will be posted in the armies barracks so you can read up on the system. This weeks battle will still be fought on the East Front, still starting at Mogilevka so your planning is still relevant. Army equipment will be as per any battle day bar one change. There will be no Mortar or other deployable objects at this time. No artillery will be in this map, we will add it in the coming weeks. As a note, the Off Map Artillery System developed by Ashby, is on the CF Server for playtime!

Battle 7 results

endb7.png

This previous Sunday we used a new cap system. It proved to be very interesting. At the start the RS were very quickly into the Area of Operations (AO) and quickly took control of the vast majority of it. The SI were slower but were able to nibble away at the RS positions. Fire fights and armor battles were breaking out all over the place. Eventually the SI were able to push into the core of the town and take control of it at the end. In the end it was a close battle and one which everyone enjoyed.

Here are some videos from Battle 7. Both of these are from either sides armor groups which is always an interesting perspective lol:

CHARLIE FOXTROT CAMPAIGN 3 BATTLE 1 THIS SUNDAY, 25th APRIL 2010: SIGN UP NOW!

camp3_card.png

Charlie Foxtrot Virtual War Campaign 3: War Breaks Out this Sunday!

Gentlemen, war is upon up once more and will begin for real this Sunday, the 25th April 2010. Charlie Foxtrot returns for its 3rd campaign and it promises to be a deadly one. Campaign 3 sees a whole host of new goodies for you the players to get their teeth into. Sick of playing on Chernaraus, well for Campaign 3 Charlie Foxtrot moves the battle to Celle, a fantastic Island created by Mondkalb. In addition the Charlie Foxtrot mod has been further updated. This campaign will see the return of combat airpower! This will take the form of Combat Air Patrol aircraft armed with missiles and cannon. Furthermore, each army will get control of an Attack Helo with Laser and Optical Guided missiles (using the GDT Mod). Finally the old faithful Bradley will return. Players who played with us in IC-ArmA will remember the punch this baby packs. Our mod extraordanire Ike has ported this over for us from the IC-ArmA Mod.

Charlie Foxtrot has returned to the old 3 objective format. We have found that after years of trying different things, this offers the best kind of battle, the battles you guys want to play. Expect devious strategy, deception faint and follow through using this system.

If you have yet to sample a Battle at Charlie Foxtrot, or wish to do so again, you can find the ways to sign up below. Whatever your calling, there's a role here at Charlie Foxtrot for YOU!

CHARLIE FOXTROT CAMPAIGN 3 BATTLE 2 THIS SUNDAY, 2nd MAY 2010: SIGN UP NOW!

camp3_card.png

Sunday the 25th April seen the open salvo's of Campaign 3 fired and it proved to be an intriguing battle. The early stages of the Battle proved to be a stalemate with both sides holding one town and with the third split down the middle. In the middle section of the battle the SI began to take control with their army holding two towns. In the latter stages of the battle the SI began to feel the strain and the RS made a surging comeback. The results were very close and it proves that this will be no doubt the closest CF: Virtual War campaign yet. After one battle the scores are this:

The first Charlie Foxtrot video competition is over, and the most glorious winner's name is:

Conroy

Jury motivation: While staying true to the task of creating a promotional video, Conroy has attempted to capture the very essence of playing in a large scale PvP tournament: The planning, the many different vehicles, the environment, the teamwork and the action. All in under three minutes, which is a suitable length for a promo.

Congratulations and honor to the winner!

Charlie Foxtrot Community Update

Hi all just an update at whats happening at Charlie Foxtrot Gaming.

New Website

Mojo has been working hard on the front end of our WEBSITE. This should make things a little bit more accessible, lightweight and more intuitive for new players. Check it out Here

Charlie Foxtrot Tournament Campaign Back Story

Community writer Jusk has been working on developing the back stories for the Charlie Foxtrot ArmA2 tournament. Have a read:

Conflict Background: Welcome to Celle

In mid-2009, the security division of Russian conglomerate Shashka International was tasked with securing the disputed former Soviet-bloc territory of Chernarus. In recent years there had been increasing pressure, both from within Chernarus and internationally, for the Russian-occupied state to be granted true independence from the Russian Federation. Tensions escalated in early 2009, when significant mineral deposits were discovered in Chernarus.

Russia took swift action to clarify what was seen by many commentators as an international grey-area, which Russia had previously been content to ignore. Shashka International were contracted to secure key strategic positions in the region, and quickly succeeded in doing so. Russia was widely condemned for its actions, with criticism ranging from veiled remarks about geo-political cynicism to more serious accusations of contravening international law. A US-backed security firm, River Stone Incorporated, was dispatched to the area to monitor Shashka International and ensure human rights were being observed. To the dismay of the international community, what followed was six months of bloody war – or more specifically, a proxy war – though both Russia and the US have gone to great lengths to downplay the conflict and obscure their official involvement in it.

The conflict played-out during autumn and winter of 2009/2010 saw Riverstone prove too strong for the Shashka forces. Eventually the Russians were forced to withdraw from the region, peace was restored, and a new interim government was established in Chernarus, pending summer elections. Shashka International all but disappeared in the immediate aftermath, and it was widely believed that the conglomerate had been dissolved, but, in April 2010 they sensationally resurfaced in a new guise. The Russian military has apparently taken quasi-control of Shashka International, in order to maximise the potential of the company’s highly trained staff, and has deployed them in a new conflict zone……. the Republic of Celle.

Since the end of the Cold War and the subsequent increase of military activity in other theatres – primarily the Middle East – the US has sub-contracted a large proportion of its security commitments to private security firms. Unknown to many, the same is true in many regions along the old Cold War frontier – including several areas in Germany. River Stone, finding themselves with many un-deployed veterans of the Chernarussian War, have recently acquired several such security contracts, believing them to be low-risk jobs. It now appears that their down-time will be curtailed, as Shashka forces have gained a foothold in Eastern Celle.

Celle, a landlocked enclave surrounded by Germany, gained independence from West Germany in October 1990, in what is now seen as an oft-overlooked, and controversial footnote in the reunification process of Germany. This small, picturesque state on the banks of the River Aller, noted for its baroque architecture and gentle rolling hills, is now a scene of panic. Thousands of residents are fleeing to neighbouring provinces by road and rail (a situation unfortunately exacerbated by the Icelandic Volcano air-travel crisis) in anticipation of a bloody reprise of the cruel struggle for Chernarus.

While Celle may seem like an unusual target for such an offensive – it is not without strategic value. Leading analysts speculate that the Russian motive for seizing control of Celle is to put increasing pressure on US resources, which may in turn force the US to withdraw security forces from oil-rich areas such as Quesh-Kibrul and Isla Duala – paving the way for subsequent Russian annexation of these regions. The strategic significance of Celle is underlined by the presence of Immelmann Barracks – a local air base. This facility – most recently used as an army aviation school, could prove invaluable. A sustained Russian foothold here, in the heart of central Europe, would be impossible for the West to ignore, and would inevitably divert attention and resources from disputed territories further afield.

This bold gambit by the Russians is further proof that a new era of aggressive resource wars is upon us. Old alliances and pacts are being ripped up and burned as international uncertainty and suspicion intensifies. The US claims Chernarus has been liberated – but at what cost? The misery of Chernarus may just have been the prologue to this developing, and increasingly horrifying story. If this quiet Germanic enclave in the heart of the western world is overrun, who will be next? The world’s eyes look to Celle.
