Introduction
ACRE2 is a full fledged communications suite for Arma, allowing realistic radio and voice communications through Teamspeak 3. The original ACRE released in the Summer of 2010 set the bar for communications in the Arma series and allowed what was once the tedious and long task of organizing Teamspeak or Ventrilo channels, with multiple whisper lists and no direct communications between groups, to be reduced to a natural implementation in a single Teamspeak channel. All players are able to speak with each other directly or use in game configurable radios to communicate at longer distances providing unparalleled immersion in the Arma series.

ACRE2 takes what ACRE1 pioneered to a whole new level. With increased performance and stability ACRE2 provides and even more immersive communications experience for the Arma user. Direct voice communications has had a complete overhaul and introduced new features such as occlusion from the environment, including vehicles and buildings, as well as multi-channel audio, allowing voices to be heard from multiple sources. A new virtual language feature in the Babel System allows mission makers to designate "languages" to certain players, making those that do not speak the same language indecipherable. This presents a multitude of gaming scenarios including player translators (Babel allows multiple languages per-person) and enemy communications that are unable to be understood.

The core feature of ACRE has always been radios though, and that has undergone major improvements in ACRE2 as well. A new, extremely powerful and modular distributed data system allows for a whole manner of new features to be simulated in a robust and reliable way, and powers the most realistic real time radio simulation released in either the civilian or military market. The new data system is designed to support large numbers of radios, in a JIP compatible and persistent world setup, as well as allowing for the future implementation of highly advanced features such as data event logging and radio replay ability. While the public beta only implements two functional radios at the moment the robust and well documented framework allows for rapid prototyping and easy implementation of new radio systems by ACRE as well as the community at large. The entire system is implemented in a way to maximize commonality with current Arma modding practices, going so far to even allow individual sounds of the radios to be modded by the community or any other feature.

Requirements
ACRE2 requires the latest version of TeamSpeak 3 be installed (either 32-bit or 64-bit), as well as the Community Base Addons (CBA) for Arma 3, which is available on Steam or on GitHub here.

All compatibility packs (Global Mobilization, S.O.G. Prairie Fire, Western Sahara, CSLA Iron Curtain and newest Spearhead 1944) are now automatically loaded when necessary. This release adds compatibility for Spearhead 1944's Normandy terrain by @Drofseh and the Heavy Ordnance Works team, while @veteran29 expanded S.O.G. Prairie Fire compatibility with improved racks and attentuation configs.

 

A freeze or deadlock in the TeamSpeak 3 plugin since TeamSpeak's v3.6.0 release has also been fixed. And thanks to @mrschick, user experience has been improved when using Radios connected to an Intercom.

ACRE2 Release 2.11.0

New release after a year featuring The Bra terrain compatibility for S.O.G. Prairie Fire by @Dahlgren and VOIP Information API by @killerswin2 allowing implementation of Enforcer systems to force users to connect to ACRE or purely informational use (note: Enforcer system is not provided with ACRE2).

 

A logging issue with large data packets that were causing hitching has been fixed thanks to @JonBons, who also added a friendly debug tool for diagnosing compartment attenuation behaviour.

 

TeamSpeak 3 Client 3.6.0 was just released, and with that, our compatibility with the new API v26. This release also marks the first release built with the new HEMTT v1 build system, which already found some significant config issues that were fixed and improved.

New radio joins the ACRE family - the BF-888S is a low-cost portable UHF radio with range of up to 5km in ideal condition and 16 programmable channel presets. Thanks to @Jsmuk for integration and Clark for the model.

Attenuation system received 2 configuration updates as well, the attenuation factor between a turned-in person and another turned-out person, as well as attenuation factor for turned-out positions between different compartments. Thanks to @Timi007 and his illustrations showcasing the new configuration for mods to use.

 

Lastly, internal speakers of all radios were updated with an additional low shelf filter effect, making it more apparent the audio is coming from a speaker.

ACRE2 Release 2.9.1

Smaller update featuring S.O.G. Prairie Fire's new Khe Sanh terrain compatibility (thanks to @veteran29) and support for precompiled SQF Bytecode (SQFC), drastically improving launch and execution time. This update also brings numerous fixes and improvements.

 

In addition, @Drofseh prepared a set of Antenna Gain Pattern videos visualizing the signal pattern of the antenna over the supported range of frequencies. Gain patterns can be used to determine the best frequencies to use in specific conditions with a given antenna. A list of antennas and their gain pattern visualizations can be found on our wiki!

This release adds new Gestures when using the radios. Using vanilla animations, it comes with support for two types of radios. Some radios will play a chest touching gestures, and others will play an ear touching gesture. Thanks to @Cyruz143.

Compatibility for the new Creator DLC: S.O.G. Prairie Fire has also been added in collaboration with the Savage Game Design team. In addition to terrain compatibility, it also adds support for using AN/PRC-77 in the co-op campaign.

ACRE2 Release 2.8.0

This release adds new God Mode speaking, allowing administrators or game masters to talk with each other or to the entire server, bypassing distance. Administrators can setup custom groups via the God Mode API and only allow access to specified players.

Spectator received a new feature - ability to listen in on radios and observe who is currently speaking on them. Clicking on a player now shows a new radio selection UI. Anyone speaking on the selected radios will be displayed in the top right corner with the radio they are speaking on. Support for other Spectator displays may be provided with use of the Spectator Displays API.

Notification System received a rigidity update and support for custom displays. Curator (Zeus), Arsenal and Spectator displays (Vanilla and ACE3) will now show notifications on top.

 

Documentation now contains a list of all public API functions for easy reference. Additionally some issues regarding antenna positions calculation and signal were fixed.

This patch release features a number of optimizations and continued improvements after last release. ACRE2 is now compatible with Tobii EyeTracker thanks to @eadelon. Core communications pipe between Arma and ACRE2 extensions received a performance improvement using extension callbacks. This release marks a large push for numerous improvements, quality of life enhancements, fixes, customization options and compatibility with Contact (Enoch) DLC (1.94).

 

Community contributions include rewritten and redesigned Volume Control by mharis001, featuring a slicker user interface and cleaner code, and TMZulu' various settings for customizing Transmit Notification colors. Last but not least, Brett implemented proper tags system in TeamSpeak metadata, solving crash issues when multiple radio mods (such as ACRE and TFAR) were loaded at the same time.

Vehicle Info UI showing Intercom and Rack status has been fixed and is now compatible with latest Arma 3 update (1.94). Other fixes include several issues with radios, such as not receiving transmissions or having too long range), racks and intercoms. Together with Brett, many Zeus bugs have also been squashed and Zeus' push-to-talk for Speak from Camera now automatically activates voice in TeamSpeak.

 

Terrain Loss coefficient default has been set back to 1.0 after recent improvements in radio and signal handling. There are now also more signal models to choose from should you wish an easier or different signal calculation. Finally, Livonia (Enoch) compatibility has been moved to main mod folder so users no longer need to load a separate mod for full experience on the new map.

ACRE2 Release 2.7.0

This release marks the introduction of two new systems in ACRE2: the Ground Spike Antenna (GSA) will help RTOs and command elements to stay hidden behind cover or laying prone without sacrificing signal quality and, thanks to the efforts of Brett, a much improved Zeus support has been introduced that covers spectator mode, hearing nearby players, external radios and talking from the camera location. Complementing these additions, API functions have been prepared by the ACRE2 Team to help spectator modes listen to player radios.

Another improvement in this release is the inclusion of a UI for the intercom. The new UI, donated to ACRE2 by RanTa, models in detail the functionality of the AN/VIC-3 Full Functional Crew Station. New functionality has been added to the intercom to match the UI improvements.

On the signal propagation side, casual communities may find this ACRE2 release quite appealing since it allows for the first time to select the signal propagation model. Through CBA settings Arcade, LOS Simple, LOS Multipath (default) and the new experimental Longley-Rice model can be selected.

Additionally, antenna inclination mode has been added, which will help boosting your signal strength by manually or automatically aligning, within a certain range, the antenna direction as close to the vertical as possible.

Finally, noticeable improvements in the UI have also been made in the form of getting rid of the Arma 2 notification system, in favour of a more modern and stackable solution. And last but not least, support for the upcoming Contact DLC has been added (in form of an optional mod for now).

- Radios can now be removed from vehicle racks.
- Fixed API function acre_api_fnc_addRackToVehicle now works as expected.
- Enabled switching radio channel on rack radios using key shortcut. Note that radios accessible only through intercom do not have this functionality. The player must be able to open the racked radio UI in order to do this.

ACRE2 Release 2.6.0

This update brings the following features to ACRE2, with a strong focus on vehicle gameplay that includes vehicle racks and an overhauled intercom system emulating VIC-3 functionality.

 

Vehicle Racks (requires ACE3 Interaction Menu)

Vehicle racks are back to ACRE2. The use of racked radios translates into longer transmission ranges due to their increase in power and the use of larger antennas. The current system supports the following racks:

  • AN/VRC-103 for the AN/PRC-117F
  • AN/VRC-110 for the AN/PRC-152
  • AN/VRC-111 for the AN/PRC-148
  • AN/VRC-64 for the AN/PRC-77
  • SEM90 for the SEM70 (with GUI interface)

Overhauled Vehicle Intercom (requires ACE3 Interaction Menu)

The new intercom system integrates with the vehicular radios, allowing transmit and receive functionality to seats without physical access to the racks. In addition, it brings support for multiple intercom networks and the ability to tweak intercom volume among other features.

 

Together with intercom, comes the infantry phone feature, which allows members of mechanized infantry to communicate through the intercom system with the crew inside an armored vehicle. 

 

External/Shared Radios (requires ACE3 Interaction Menu)

It is now possible to share radios with other comrades without the need of giving them. This works for personal, backpack radios and vehicular radios.

 

API

API functions that deal with vehicular radios have been added for mission makers. Namely:

Improvements

A new version is not exempt of optimizations, improvements and fixes, like the signal calculation fix after the 1.82 update. Translations have also received some attention although 100% localization is not yet accomplished.

This update mainly focuses Vanilla and upcoming ACE3 Arsenal support, TeamSpeak Channel Switching improvements, bug fixing and optimisations.

 

Arsenal

Vanilla Arsenal is now fully supported by ACRE2, radios will temporarily be swapped for base radios, which will make them visible and removable in the Arsenal. Additionally Arsenal will not include them in any newly saved loadouts or exports!

In addition, upcoming ACE3 Arsenal is also fully supported, displaying all radios with their channel names (as seen on picture).

TeamSpeak Channel Switching

TeamSpeak Channel Switching got improved with ability to set a Channel Password, allowing automatic switching to a pasworded channel. Thanks to CBA 3.5.0 that text is also hidden in-game! Channel name check has been improved to now compare full channel name, then words and characters at the end.

 

Size Reduction

Tanoa PBO, which housed height data for signal processing and was also the majority of ACRE2's size, is now removed, as map is decrypted with Arma 3 Version 1.78. ACRE2's package size went from 86 MB to 40 MB archived, resulting in over 50% reduction!

 

API

Custom spectator systems or other custom displays can now enjoy new API function to assign ACRE2 keybinds to that display on load. Currently only "Toggle Spectators" key is passed through, however more keybinds will be added if deemed meaningful.

TeamSpeak Channel Switching

One of the most requested features finally found its way into ACRE2, added by a contributor @tbeswick96. This feature allows hands-free switching between current and an Arma-designated channel.

Localization

Full Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese translations are a part of this update, as well as great effort on updates of Japanese, German and Polish translations.

4nec2 Antenna Calculation

All antenna calculation switched from using the old gain model to a new one, powered by 4nec2. This allows faster and easier addition of new antennas, read more about the process here.

Other

Other less but not least important additions include a box with radios for quick and easy access and gearing up and a radio preset for AN/PRC-77, for ability to set default channel via scripting. It is now also possible to open radios on the main ACE3 interaction point in addition to sub-action.

 

Additionally, default Terrain Loss coefficient has been changed to 0.5 (from 1.0), making ACRE2 slightly friendlier and more approachable to new users while still keeping it very realistic (old value was found to be a tad too much).

 

AN/PRC-148 had its display fixed after Arma 3's font-breaking update 1.72, and all radios are no longer mine detectors after mine-creating update 1.76. And thanks to @LordGolias SQF Linter, a lot of the code was improved that would otherwise be missed.

This hotfix focuses on fixing a rather annoying crash when running 64-bit build of Arma 3, as well as introduces improvements to antenna C++ code.

ACRE2 Release 2.4.1

This update mainly focuses on bug fixing, general improvements, code clean-up and optimisations, as well as translations.

 

A direct speech bug, which became even more apparent with 64-bit version of Arma 3, has been fixed and loading into a mission should now be hassle-free without randomly making your character deaf!

 

Additionally, 117F and 152 radio menus are now compiled only once instead of twice during mission start and the antenna direction calculation will no longer rotate with hyper-rotational-speed. An optimisation was also implemented in reference to vanilla event handlers, they should no longer force the game to do time consuming stringy stuff.

 

ACE3 radio self-interaction will now hide itself if it has nothing useful to show, and the order of left, centre and right spatial configurations will no longer drive on the wrong side of the road.

 

Those using the acre_api_fnc_setCustomSignalFunc API to change how the signal gets calculated will now be able to reset it to default in scheduled environment as well. API documentation received some updates, if you were looking for something in the past, there is a good change it's there to be found now.

ACRE2 Release 2.4.0

The 2.4.0 release largely focuses on fixing bugs and adding support for TeamSpeak 3.1 and Arma 3's upcoming 64-bit support.

 

Teamspeak 3.1 Support

ACRE2's TeamSpeak plugins have been updated to support TeamSpeak 3.1. They are not backwards compatible so updating to TeamSpeak 3.1 to use this version of ACRE2 is a must. The plugin auto-updater included with the Steam releases of ACRE2 is now included in all releases and has been updated to support the new plugin paths in TeamSpeak 3.1. One of the benefits of the TeamSpeak update is that the default plugin installation is now in application data so it can be copied to without requiring administrator privileges.

 

64-bit Extensions

ACRE2's now comes with 64-bit extensions making ACRE2 ready for the upcoming Arma 3 64-bit update.

 

Further CBA Setting Support

In the last release we introduced functionality with CBA Settings into ACRE2 for some client-side systems. In this release we have added several 'difficulty' settings which were previously changed by calling API functions.

This release also has translations for the CBA Settings, ACE3 Interaction texts and key bind texts. To date we have translations for Spanish, German, Japanese, Czech, Italian and French languages.

Open sourcing
With this release ACRE2 is now officially an open source project. ACRE2's source is now available on GitHub under the GNU-GPL3 license. The entire project is open sourced including the C++ extensions and TeamSpeak plugins. Anyone is welcome to fork the project as long as conditions of the license are met. Everyone is also welcome to contribute and create pull requests to the project as long as they follow the coding standards.

Under the hood
Significant tweaks have been to the ACRE codebase including switching to various CBA frameworks and updated methodologies. Part of this has included shifting the client side settings that were formerly set in the teamspeak plugin into the CBA framework settings. These are now accessible in-game via Options->Game->Configure Addons

I'd be surprised if Steam Workshop allowed you to do that, I imagine they have pretty strict restrictions on where exactly addons can and cannot place their files.

 

Also, I can't seem to find ACRE on the workshop, does it have to go through some approval process first or is Steam just being slow?

I'd be surprised if Steam Workshop allowed you to do that, I imagine they have pretty strict restrictions on where exactly addons can and cannot place their files.

 

Also, I can't seem to find ACRE on the workshop, does it have to go through some approval process first or is Steam just being slow?

The visibility is set to hidden right now and won't change. Trying to resolve it.

Also it is Arma that does the file installation of TS plugins technically.

Stating 'huge FPS drops' is not useful. With due respect this lacks an adequate description of the problem to help you. You should provide as much detail as possible to reproduce. What is happening when this occurs? is it only when people are broadcasting/speaking. What radios are being used. How many people are present? What mods are running?

Stating 'huge FPS drops' is not useful. With due respect this lacks an adequate description of the problem to help you. You should provide as much detail as possible to reproduce. What is happening when this occurs? is it only when people are broadcasting/speaking. What radios are being used. How many people are present? What mods are running?

Sorry for not originally giving more information. When using just ACRE, ACE, and CBA we see huge frame losses. I made a mission and put a single unit down. When walking around without ACRE, 76 FPS. When I activate ACRE, don't use it, just having it on my list, my FPS is around 30.

Would it be possible to get a copy of the mission file and a copy of the rpt?

Just tried using the example missions, while the FPS seems fine (probably because it's virtual), but I still get the not connected error. Tried everything as admin, nothing as admin, restarting TS while in the server, reinstalled the mod. Anything I can think of.

Appreciate the report. ACRE2 now parses the island (wrp) files directly to get the terrain heightmap. No doubt it starts loading here but fails.

ACRE: Loading Map: \veterans\angel\angel.wrp

 

This is also an issue on the 'Takistani Mountains' terrain but with every other terrain we have tested it works. This only effects a few terrains, I'll take a look into the wrp parser with this island at somepoint. You can follow the progress on this ticket:

Do you have the plugin enabled in teamspeak? Does it show in the list of available plugins in teamspeak?

 

Manual Installation instructions (as per main post):

Manual Installation:

  • Download from the above link and extract the zip file to your hard drive.
  • Open the extracted folder and open the Teamspeak/plugins folder.
  • Copy the correct version of the plugin dll for your Teamspeak installation.
  • Navigate to your Teamspeak installation and open the plugins folder.
  • Paste the plugin into that folder, overwriting any current ACRE2 plugin.
  • Return to the extracted folder and go to the Game folder.
  • Copy the @ACRE2 folder.
  • Navigate to your Arma 3 installation folder.
  • Delete any current @ACRE2 folder and then paste in the @ACRE2 folder you copied from the extracted zip.
  • Create a new shortcut or edit an existing one, and add @ACRE2 and @CBA_A3 to the -mod parameter, for a longer explanation see this tutorial: http://www.armaholic...m=posts&q=20866
  • Launch Teamspeak 3 and enable the ACRE2 plugin in the Settings > Plugins window.

Followed the instructions. My friends are also having the same issue. None of us can get it to connect. Plugin is 100% active, it even shows what version my friends are running.

As snippers said, the best way to track this down is to put an issue on our issue-tracker.

 

And to have a basis for analysis, we need .rpts plus a video or anything like that

 

Common pitfalls for the plugin-errors are:

- Missing rights on arma/teamspeak -> start both as NON-Admin

- Your virus scanner has deleted .dll files of acre in the @acre2 folder (there must be both acre.dll and ACRE2Arma.dll)
