I'm just going to put this out there; does anyone know if it's possible to create an emissive plane that has the semblance of sunlight? In particular, the shafts of daylight, visible when sun streamers are intersected by things like trees? I ask, because I would like to create a faux sky for a composite sewer system - so, at night, I could create an aperture in the sewer system that would make it look like it was daylight above ground, by using a simple plane, emitting light. A longshot, I know! :P

Thanks, as always, in advance!

but seriously probably not do-able without a looooooooottt of map work. prehaps a 2d texture would suit the purpose (i assume it would need to be fairly high resolution so it doesn't look like crap)? much math invovled im sure but could work

Couldn't you use a spotlight/street light to achieve the result? Maybe it could be scripted that as you enter the tunnels day becomes night, light becomes active and shines through grate?

cannot be done since only the sun and the moon cast shadows. any other source of light would light up the entire thing, and it wouldn't achieve the tunnel/cave effect he said he wants to achieve

Also, spotlights go through walls, which is problematic

they don't really go through walls per se, it's a side effect of not having casting shadows.

Thanks chaps! You've basically confirmed what I suspected! :P At least it works okay at night, with moonlight seeping between the barred grate!
