splitstring doesn't work?

I would like to have returned the current amount of bullets of the current magazine of a unit:

mag = currentMagazineDetail player;
mag splitString " []()/:";
hintsilent format ["%1",mag];

or hintsilent format ["%1",mag select 3];
 

Seemingly splitstring doesn't do anything. "mag" remains the same before and after the splitstring-treatment.
