My First Impressions

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Tuned into the twitch feed 4am Sydney time this morning to see what the Eden Editor was all about........ not once imagining that I would be able to get my hands on the editor today. When I saw Jay press the button titled Release Beta I said to myself "No Way!"... but sure enough....... download the latest Development Build and there it is .... the beta version of Eden.

I have already had a quick play with it and I have to say I am highly impressed.

I loaded the map I am currently building...... quickly moved to a section of the map and was able to quickly find an object and place it on the map a lot quicker and with greater ease than the 2D editor.

Eden Editor is pretty simple and straight forward to use and I was able to add some new objects to a scenario that I had not found easily with the 2D editor.

As I am several weeks into building a new map I can see that the Eden Editor is going to be a great asset to my little project and just want to thank the guys at Bohemia for giving me the chance to get my hands on Eden today.

I have to say that I do like the 2D Editor which comes with Arma 3... it gets the job done.

However.... now that I have been able to get my hands on Eden I have to say that the 3D Editor is in every way superior to the 2D Editor.

Thanks for releasing the beta today guys........ I will certainly be using it a lot over the coming weeks and months and give feedback of any issues I find.

I'm looking forward to your Rhodesian map for sure... How will Eden help you to create the map ? Do you mean mission files that you will publish with the map ? I.e. a campaign

I don't think currently Eden allows exporting objects to a terrain building format ? Unless you spotted something we didn't  :-)

As my map progresses I am going to create the scenerios and test each section I do........

This is what I have being doing with the 2D editor but Eden is just so much easier to create the scenerios to test my map...but no... Eden is not for terrain building.

I accidentally discovered a cool feature with Eden.

I placed a civ vehicle in one of my towns and the vehicle had a driver in it. Somehow I accidentally removed the driver from the vehicle with my mouse and he was standing beside the vehicle. I then thought what would happen if I dragged another civilian over the car....... sure enough he became the new driver.

There's already an option to save for Terrain Builder under the Scenario menu (Top left corner)

Some feedback real quick

  • Batch editing objects / units (Being able to set playable in one go or sychronizing multipe objects). Thank god!
  • Please add marker resizing by dragging. Hold shift and drag in direction to increase size.
  • Pitch/Bank is still quite tricky. I've noticed that when building is under terrain level (Which you'd want on some slopes) it still snaps to the slope whenever you move it. Hopefully that will be fixed with rotation widget.
  • While moving object on slope it jumps up and down
  • Please take the time to add good tagging/mod markings for assets. Being able to search mod names and so on would be great.
  • Import option doesn't take pitch/bank from setVectorUp and height into account right now
  • Please add subfolder support for mission saving!
  • Adding external folders for missions would be good as well. Noticed the area that has Missions/MPMissions is quite long maybe it's already planned
  • setObjectTexture live view would be good. Maybe it's already possible through adding an attribute for it, but not sure if attritbutes are used in eden view
  • Ceiling and floor for triggers yes please!
  • Ability to mod full top menu (I noticed Community Tools under Tools option, but I imagine it would get chaotic if everything has to be under there)
  • 3D marker view. I did see it for triggers, but not for (shaped) markers yet.

this is excellent! so many great missions will result from this.

is it possible to edit unit weapons directly in the editor - like using arsenal? Same for vehicles? if so i cannot find it. be nice to simply have it as part of the right click menu.

big thanks BIS!

edit - and toggle map isnt the most intuitive way to change between 2d and 3d. why not just say 2D/3D?

what would be awesome is the ability to determine which way the unit should face when using waypoints? and do so interactively with graphic depiction of the direction? or am i missing it?

one more thing - waypoints could be more visible at distance.  3d means things might be far away.

and it would be great to be able to run time simulation while still in the 3d editor (like in the fantastic camera) to watch scenarios playing out from different vantage points :)

selecting a unit should make all their waypoint appear. right now it doesn't seem to unless you add another waypoint.

Actually when you need to see waypoints better just select group they belong to. After that, all waypoints appear and all lines between them are drawn over everything so you can spot connections more easily ;)

Just discovered that automatic numbering of units works a million times better now, e.g. place a unit called test, copy and paste it it becomes test_1, copy and paste again then the new one is test_2, fair better than test-->test_1-->test_1_1. Sounds tiny but it's just that much more usable. Thank you BI, absolutely loving all these new features!

Yeah, they showed this in the live stream. Great feature!

I've noticed some objects not staying in their set positions. For example, a unit went deeper and deeper into the ground every time I loaded a saved mission in the editor. Or a piece of concrete was moving higher and higher with every preview / reload.

Then markers placed in Eden don't have their set direction when previewing the mission. They are displayed with the correct dir in Eden though.

And Eden is sometimes changing classnames of already placed units when I re-open their attributes again to change something. It so far only happened with mod units (so that might be the problem). Interestingly, Eden always swapped the classname with the classname the unit was inherited from in the config.

It's been more than once "confirmed" that 3DEN integration of Arsenal is planned; they haven't said the same for vehicles though, presumably because the VhC system and Virtual Garage don't support 'loadout editing' for vehicles yet, only customizing of appearance.

Its been nothing but a hassle to me. Constantly crashes to the point of making it unusable. I can't even spend anymore than 10 minutes making a little base or something and it will crash to desktop. Simple things like clicking a unit to edit attributes, previewing a mission, placing groups, literally anything makes it crash. It is extremely unstable and in my opinion, a complete piece of trash. They should get rid of it and stick with the 2D editor that works. Bring Eden in after it's fixed.
