AI limits

What I would like to know is why there is a limit to the number of AI units which you can place in a mission.

I mean 144 enemy hostiles ain't that many for let's say, a town assault. The assault which is accompanied by a number of helicopter gunners is quite easy due to the fact that the militiamen ain't enough. I could off course increase the difficulty but we prefer battling with human beings and not some super natural powered hostiles which can shoot you from miles away with nothing but a non-scoped AK-47.

So is there a way to increase this limit?

It would really be helpful if such a thing was possible.

144 is the limit of groups per side, not units per side.

Group your units.
