31st Normandy Mod: World War II for ArmA3

I've spread word of it around for a while now, as an example of what the engine can do, and people are always amazed (with a touch of horror) at how long it takes just to cross the channel. :D

There's a Mars mod coming out for A3, with a 100x100 mod, claiming they have the largest map ever done for the series. I tried to let him know he was mistaken, and he seemed to both not believe me, and dismissed my words offhand. They'll find out soon enough ^_^

Yes, Takes some time. But if your piloting a bomber, you'll need it to avoid fighters.

biggest for Arma is 201km * 201 km

TOH is 350 *350 km

Nots sure how big this map will be but if it runs like seattle in TOH it will be great :)

Map performance is great! 153,600m x 153,600m

Take on Helicopters is 3,800 square km. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Take_On_Helicopters

Ours is 23,592 square km.

Yes official map is 60*60 seattle and 120km*120kms south asia , I was talking custom map addon size , however on topic I very much looking forward to this one with its custom buildings :)

Well I'm unsure if there is a larger one out there or not, but I think what were offering is sufficient for what we're scaling without making it to big. If someone has one already done or in the works, then I sympathize with them, as the challenge of object placement and time consumption becomes a huge issue!

Think of it this way...you can fly the average ww2 fighter 35 minutes east or to the south and still not make it one direction across the map

That is why when I sent you the objective ideas the rewards were closer spawn points for certain assets. Otherwise these battles will be really really tedious and long hikes which make them unplayable.

Hmm average speed was 318 mph so 505 km at 35 minutes they should go over your terrain by 100km , maybe your calculation is off on speed of plane perhaps .

To me I dont mind I spent hours flying in TOH arma etc and now with new clouds to fly over your map is gonna be special :)

I will get link for other maps ive played them myself so they exist , so far A3 tho biggest is 160*160 I believe 4096 with 40 m cells iirc this is of section of Asia

Mobile spawns, forward bases fix that.

As far as each component of the game in respect to the map, there will be a rewarding compensating factor. For example, Someone moves a half- track from the forward base spawn point and once it's within close proximity to an objective, infantry spawning can begin from that vehicle.

We're also looking to achieve a immersive factor. For example, you can't just jump in a B-24 and instantly warp to the action and start bombing everything in sight including the freshly detected enemy infantry from the mobile spawn and stop their assault instantly!. First things first...Squadron breifing on the objective. Order to battle or scramble is given. Crew loads bombs and munitions based on supply. Pilot/Co-pilot complete checklists including turning engines, checking flight controls, contacting tower. Flight plan approved, rendevous with squadron and escorts if applicable. Long scary climb to cruising/ bombing altitude with possibilty of enemy fighter contact. Cruise over channel towards target. Navigation to objective, bombadier aquires target, crew opens doors, captain gives orders to drop. You get the idea! Realism to an extent, but reward for teamwork and accomplishments.

It's not going to be cut and dry.

Team work and planning come into play.

Were building a lot of extra details into the vehicles to help with that. It includes everything. Your rounds will not be preloaded into a magazine.

As soon as I get the map up, I will create mission markers to outline Altis and I will paste the outline of Altis several times inside the map so you can get a perspective of how big it really is.

That's HUGE, I cant wait to kill my computer :p may I ask how wide the channel is on your map? it would be cool fly my bomber over the ocean for a minute or two

It took me 10-15 minutes to cross in a C-47, back in ArmA 1... :D

(Might've even been longer. I almost wanna say 20, but I'll settle for 15.)

Just wondering... And don't get me wrong I love what your doing here and can't wait to play with it. Just a question will the map be only playable with the mod?

no you will be able to do whatever you like on the map, like all other big mods for example....

-isla duala has a map and you could do whatever you wanted vice versa

You'll have the option to launch the mod/map with normal options. The mod itself will include some additional launch options.

Comparing this mod to arma2, will it be completely different?

Looks like you will be competing against i44 ;) but the map already is a winner being that big!

It's a lot different. All the weapons, infantry, vehicles, scripting, and of course the map. We're not competing with anyone, nor is it a race to release first. It's ready when it's ready. There's always going to be folks that favor one over the other, or people that appreciate both. The amount of downloads and feedback has been extremely satisfying in the past. We appreciate and respect other modders work. The modders within this community know these big projects take a lot of work. All of which comes for the price of free. That said, this time around were shooting for a higher quality, more polished release we can build on in the future.

30 day Work in Progress update:

The map:

Right now were in the process of masking materials onto our map. As you can see it's gigantic and has A lot of cities, towns, and places. You should all find it pretty awesome when it's ready...

Right now we have several pieces of armor being updated with all the new A3 specs. We had to kind of go back a little bit after BIS released details on building Armored units for A3.

There are several new uniforms being updated for our infantry, and Aircraft are in work. That is exactly what is going on. Sort of vague, but that's how we roll.

More updates to follow. Sorry for the poor quality image as I was trying to take a 40 gig image and pair it down under 100kb to get it on the boards + a few glasses of red. :)
