"Telemetry range increased" - ummm... no?

Recommended Posts

The island is Acheron. I had 2 Mantas (3+4) just a bit outside of the telemetry range.

So the task was to take out the Scrambler as fast as possible.

Did that and the guy said "Telemetry range increased, that's the way, sir" - and what happened to the telemetry range? Nothing. If I mouseover the Scrambler (close to the Mantas 5+2), it says "Destroyed", but my two other Mantas are still right outside the range:

Is there a misunderstanding on my side?

While I can't say I have tested this very much I can confirm I have also found this a little bit strange. I have had a Manta with lots of noise on screen and taking out a scrambler with another Manta did not change the amount of noise on screen for the first manta. In other cases I do recall having a noisy screen on the manta I'm flying and taking out a scrambler did take away the noise...

Could it be that the scrambler scrambles a circle around it? Meaning taking out one does not in general increase telemetry range but only in an area surrounding it? I know this does not sync with messages and the telemetry range shown on map, just thinking out loud.

Er... by "taking out" do you mean destroying it? Because if you destroy it that does nothing but screw you over. You have to get a walrus up beside it and hack it. :) (Hacking Module not nessesery)

But sometimes the circle does not increase very much depending on where the other scrambler is. If you sail around the island you will see the telemetry circle increasing and decreasing. All thats guaranteed is that when you are close to it the Telemetry circle will be over the scrambler.

Are you really sure?! I think you mean the Firewalls - yes, they are not to destroy. But the Scramblers are "well being destroyed" in my experience.

If you sail around the island you will see the telemetry circle increasing and decreasing.

Yes, thats correct. I think thats in relation to the hills which are maybe blocking the scrambler-signals.

@tortuosit: Are you sure, you have destroyed ALL scramblers? Sounds like there remain some. Because the final message after destroying the last scrambler is like "well done - now we have FULL telemetry range" instead of the "increased"-Message. This is a good and pretty sure sign that you destroyed not all scramblers / not the last scrambler.

No, I destroyed the first scrambler on the island only! And I was under the impression that destroying it means, the telemetry range must increase in whatever way. But I had no (on the map) indicator that ANYTHING has changed at all! Well at least the blue circle around the carrier remained unchanged.

Why do you ask - do you think there will be only a change after the last scrambler has been destroyed?

@Suranis: In the game questlog (or however that is called) it's clearly written that "destroying is an option".

2nd question here: Does destroying have the same negative influence as destruction of other things, i.e. it has to be build again, if the island is mine?

Well, in everygame I've played I've sailed up and deactivated them. I have no idea what "destroying them" will accomplish as I've never done so. Deactivating them is the way to go.

And yeah they would need to be rebuilt like any other building.

Ok. Tonight in my game I actually decided to blow them up. YOu are correct, the voice says "telemetry range increased" as you destroy them, but the circle does not actually increase.

However, it in effect does not matter, as when you sail around the Island to get to the next Scrambler, the range increases to cover the scrambler you have to tale out anyway. Its possible that you get a little bonus if you hack the scrambler rather than destroy it, but in effect it does not adversely affect you too much if you just decide to nuke it. Obviously it will mean that the scramblers will have to be rebuilt by the Islands though.

I'm sorry if I seemed a little condecending in my earlier post, that was not my intention.

Destroying is as correct as hacking. So it is your choice. As for why the telemetry range did not visibly increase, it is because of the way the scramblers work. Each has its own radius of effect, and only when an area is covered by two scramblers does the effect come into play, so in all probability, when you destroyed that scrambler, there is another nearby with a range that is preventing you from getting closer.

In fact, looking at your screenshot I see a scrambler to the left hand side.

Thanks Martin - I think this needs further clarification ("the way the scramblers work") - but anyway in my case of Acheron there is a problem, or maybe I don't see the tactics yet? You are right, there's the other scrambler in the center of the island. But I've got no chance to destroy/hack it (same goes for the command center which is beside it) - it's always out of range, no matter where the carrier is. I see no chance to bring my vehicles there. And there is no third scrambler to disable.

EDIT: Ugh, now I see there are more scramblers, I didn't realize that first there are target indicators (the triangle with the bottom line) and the scrambler icons are showed later...
