    1.08 Dedicated server troubleshooting

It's been a week... and no response from BIS on this matter. There IS a problem with some servers that cause the Arma_server.exe not to work. I see 2 of them are Windows 2003 servers. A response from BIS would be nice...

    1.08 Dedicated server troubleshooting

Specs as requested: Windows Server 2003 SP2 2.8 Dual Xeon CPUs 2 GB Ram 150 GB Seagate SCSI Drives All this system does is ArmA... doesnt even run a Web or FTP. Dedicated solely for ArmA and ArmA isnt running... O.o Like I said, arma_server.exe shows up in the processes... but the server isnt running and no graphical startup is seen. I did a fresh re-install patching 1.01 --> 1.05 --> 1.08. Twice. P.S. BTW, the Full Dedicated Server download is unavailable... there needs to be another download mirror or something.

Yeah, FragHaus has no official server at the moment. No word from BIS and no one really responding about this issue.

    1.08 Dedicated server troubleshooting

We have used FireDaemon. However, not with 1.08... have to get the game to run first. The process does start but nothing shows on the desktop (the little dedicated interface that displays the server info... nor the little startup check marks). I am baffled as there is no feedback to tell me what is going on. BIS? Help? :P

    1.08 Dedicated server troubleshooting

I have one... and need some help. Click on Arma_Server.exe (or via a shortcut with the parameters -netlog -config=server.cfg) and the server doesn't start... it shows in the processes but the server is not actually running. It ran fine under all other versions. I have re-installed multiple times. It doesn't even do the on-screen loading and gives no errors. I have no method to troubleshoot since there are no logs being generated. We run Windows 2003 on a Dual Xeon. Anyone? Ideas?

    Patch 1.08 - Released!

I don't think most of the servers have updated yet. That might be because there is only 1 Mirror hosting the Dedicated Server file... and not even BIS has a link to one folks can download from them. FYI... whoever is being used for the mirror of the dedicated server has connectivity issues. Downloads keep stopping for me and several others. What a pain... can't even get to 50% completed and it drops. Thats using an OC connection to grab it too. Come on BIS... atleast host your own Dedicated Server file so we have atleast a another option. (or is there one that hasnt been publically said yet? If so someone post it please)

    Dedicated Server Licensing?

The matter of "preference" comes in the interfacing of the server. Linux is without a doubt the absolute best server platform for gaming servers. Hands down, bar-none, when speaking from a performance and flexibility standpoint. Linux does not have the overhead and allows much more flexibility when it comes to interacting with programs. Some people just don't know (or uncomfortable with) Linux and therefore steer clear of it. Linux is a thumbs up for performance and flexibility, but a lacks an easy to use built in interface (but there are options). Windows, anyone can learn. In fact, there really isnt much learning involved considering Windows 2000/2003 are very similiar to Windows XP (your home/desktop computer)... as far as running a game server app. Windows Remote Desktop is very nice... but the Windows overhead with its innate GUI does come at a cost. A cost to server performance. Sure you can reduce the overhead by cutting processes but it still has to runs the GUI no matter what. Windows is a thumbs up for ease of use and interfacing... but thumbs way down for performance and flexibilty. As far as linux and interfacing with it... a solution to allow remote administration on Linux without needing shell access or knowing linux commands... is to use Webmin or CPanel. Webmin is the free solution. Cpanel would be what a hosting provider uses. There are others but those are the 2 most common. They aren't GUI's and have no overhead cost unless they are actively being used. They can also allow other Game Server Admins a certain level of access such as a simple server restart without giving them the keys to the whole system. (i.e. you aren't around and OFP needs restarted... you can direct them to a webpage that has a handy restart button that they login to and restart the server)... and thats just an example... the possiblities are virtually endless of what can be done on linux. Sorry, I know this may seem a little diatribish... but I have done hosting for about 11 years now and I just wanted to put it out there about the differences... shortcomings and benefits. Maybe the wrong thread and I apologize.

    Dedicated Server Licensing?

*Shudder* Come on man... I don't want to run in an emulation. Wine isn't the answer for Linux... no way no how. heh Linux is just a better platform for larger servers... windows never could handle the loads of gaming servers like Linux.

    Linux Dedicated Server

Not sure I follow... Are you saying that they are working hard on a Linux Server edition? Awesome if that is the case.... where did BIS state that? Or are you saying they work hard and don't ask about Linux? heh We know they work hard... we appreciate what they do... but on the other hand we are customers too. I wish BIS success... just would like to know if a Linux Server version is in the works.
  11. Just got an email from another person this evening that saw this thread but was unable to post... having the same problems with a Windows 2003 Dual Xeon system.
  12. I'm not sure where you got this story from m8, but I was just saying that it took me aswell days to narrow the problem down, but for us we found it... as I hoped would be possible in this case aswell, besides .. im not blaming anyone's server, as i'm not the one who starts about ours being an "amd" and that's "" I'll unpassword our server 1 soon btw, let's see what crashjoy that brings But anyway, nothing more to add, goodluck! erm no offense... SickBoy I give you props on making things for the community but please man understand some of us have been around for many years running OFP servers along with many other gaming servers. We pretty much can tell there is an issue with the program vs the server itself. Yeah we may need to tweak something on the server to make the program eek by a little better but fact remains this is an application issue and I hope by us sticking together we can help BIS find a solution. Â The AMD/Intel thing is a joke and I am pretty sure everyone can see that. Â
  13. I believe that is my point... all servers are crashing to some degree. Some more than others... some go for almost a day without a crash and then crash 3-4 times in a row... without a real reason seemingly. You say "as far as stable is possible with the current version"... I think you have the just of my post... there is a problem and BIS may very well need our assistance to track down the various reasons for these strange crashes. Whether it be sensitivity to mission variables or mem leaks or port issues... whatever the issues may be there are issues that BIS needs input on (aparently). Just being accepting of the fact there are crashes probably isn't going solve them... I understand many don't wanna "rock the boat" and neither do I... I like ArmA and loved OFP... but bugs are bugs are bugs and we gotta help BIS track them down if at all possible.
  14. Nah, guaranteed not the issue... just found fixed restarted server and boom another bomb within 10 mins. But now that I have the rpt file I will review as crashes occur... too bad I can't read the mdmp. Yeah lets not get on the Intel is better than AMD thing
  15. Either way, I certainly am not the only one that has crashing issues. Other servers maybe aren't as bad but they still crash much more than they should. I am pretty sure BIS needs to view some of our dumps to troubleshoot and really nab the culprits. Placebo? You around bud?
