ATTN NOOBIES! - New to ArmA II or OA - Here's the place for your questions

Recommended Posts

When you place a unit in the editor , there will be a slider that set's the units skill .

Appreciate the info - Thanks.

Is this a number rating for skill....or a generic description level (such as green / veteran / elite?)

Continuing with my "noob" questions. I'm learning / reading about "modfolders".... Trying to figure out the "where / how" of making them....and where to place them within the ARMA directory.....

I know for certain once my ARMA 2 arrives in the mail...and once patched to 1.05.... I would like to have the following addon's for certain. From which to build my own missions / scenarios off of.....Those being of the following....

TF86 Navy SEALs Pack

Zeus AI Combat Skills

Desert Mercenaries and BlackOps

RH HK416 Pack

RH M4/M16 Pack Rearmed

Now my question is .....How exactly do I go about making this happen. Would I give each of these their OWN folder (mod folder). Or would I put all of them within ONE mod folder?

Thanks again....

Hello, when I try to apply the patch,

I get a "7 zip Attempt to access invalid address" error. And when I manually extract the files and double click the exe I get a Blue Screen.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi. Apologies in advance for probably a stupid question the answer for which I did do a search. I just reinstalled Arma 2, patched it up and I notice that in the Editor I have no 'F7' option. I know it should be there because it definately was the last time I installed.

Thats strage as far as i know thats the module shortcut, anyone eles shed some light on this??

Well regarding my post above I just did a full uninstall/reinstall and same thing. In the Editor menu I get listed F1,F2,F3,F4,F5,F6 and then nothing but a blank space where few weeks ago on my very first install I had F7. This has got to be something I'm doing ( or not doing)?

Try to apply the succesives patches maybe instead of only the last one...

If it doesn't work, try in the troubleshooting section

For several reasons ArmAII is both hard to get & expensive for me. But I am not sure if it will be worth the cost & I need someone to clarify some aspects of gameplay. I have played the demo.

My main query is: How much of the gameplay consists of "Trial by Fire" type pure tactical FPS & what portions consist of the "Offline MMORPG" & Strategy Game mixtures?

Are there enough third party missions like "Trial by Fire" that play like pure tactical FPS?

No offense to those who love the High command mode & other non-FPS aspects but I am only a marksman plus CQB expert fighter. I can lead a small team of assassins, but leading a full-scale war is not my job. The superior fighting AI in ArmAII has attracted me & that is all.

Hi sbcontt

Simple answer: Yes. :)

As with all BIS's games since BIS's OFP and on through ArmA I to ArmA II there is a mass of user created content:

http://www.armaholic.com/index.php?c=news_missions

http://www.armedassault.info/index.php?game=0&cat=solo

And of course you can create you own dynamic missions in seconds using the inbuilt editor.

But these links are leading to old ArmA missions?

I don't like the CQB AI of old ArmA & I was talking about purchasing ArmA 2. I know that there are several excellent singleplayer missions for ArmAII even in these forums but I don't know their gameplay approach. ArmAII main storyline was also supposed to be singleplayer & yet they included those capture the flag, voting, points, befriending clans, Multiple endings, "Manager mode" & lots of other things including lots of scripted (mostly broken) events.

Do third party SP missions (those full dynamic missions?) generally exclude those aspects?

I think I shall wait for more opinions.

They do. The Warfare mode in the SP campaign was often criticised, because it was boring to play it as the only human player. This link leads to more appropriate section of Armaholic, feel free to check the description of all those missions over there to get the general idea of how diverse the missions can be.

Hi sbcontt

Sorry in too much of a rush :D

Should have done this before; now filtered for ArmA II content only ;)

http://www.armaholic.com/list.php?c=a2_sp_missions

http://www.armedassault.info/index.php?cat=solo&game=1

NB As I said you can of course create you own dynamic missions in seconds using the inbuilt editor it really is very easy.

When changing the "target line" in my ARMAexe file (to include mods and the nosplash)...I can't get the nosplash to work when in combination with mods.

It works if I do it stand alone (no mods). My mods work, when I place them in the target string..... Yet, I can't get them both to work.

Does the "-nosplash" come first? or behind the @mods? If it is at the end, should it read -mods=@mods;-nosplash ??

Hi meade95

This is one of my target lines from one of my shortcuts and it works.

"C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2\arma2.exe" -nosplash -mod=@cba;@ace;@acex;@acex_pla;@acex_sm;@zcommon

I do tend to put the mod line last. ;)

Note also the space between each hyphenated switch

If it is at the end, should it read -mods=@mods;-nosplash ??

Also the last mod does not need a ";" after it I think. The semicolon is there to say there is another modfolfder after this. Your target line as it stands infers a mod called -nosplash ;)

A target line switch should read like this

-switch1 -switch2 -nosplash -mod=...

Which I think is your problem.

Kind regards walker

Are you sure you type it right? It should look like this:

"...\ArmA 2\arma2.exe" -nosplash -mod=@mods;@otherMods

EDIT: Listen to the walker :p

okay, so there is a {space} between the -nosplash and the -mod=@mod1

Meaning.... \ArmA 2\arma2.exe" -nosplash (SPACE) -mod=@mod1

I believe, perhaps(?) I haven't been putting a (SPACE) there, but going right to the (-nosplash-mod=@mod1).

Thank you!

Any reccomendations for a Desert style map (Iraq'ish)....

Hi meade95

Quesh-Kibrul

http://www.armedassault.info/index.php?game=1&cat=islands&id=99

You will need to setup a mod folder switch in your shortcut to an addon mod folder like say @islands.

This BIS wiki page explains how modfolders work:

http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Modfolders

My shortcut for running Zeus multiplayer looks like this:

"C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2\arma2.exe" -nosplash -mod=@cba;@ace;@acex;@acex_pla;@acex_sm;@zcommon

The new Operation Arrowhead will have an Afghan environment and may have a form of repository

You may find it easier to use the Zeus yoma repository or one of the other repositories to maintain a general group of addons.

The Zeus Repository includes a whole buch of islands as well as everything you need for ACE II and of course Zeus AI.

This explains how to set it up:

http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=79628

You can learn more on the Zeus website

http://zeus-community.net/jom/

Look under the Zeus Manual

http://zeus-community.net/important/zeusmanual.pdf

And the Zeus forums

http://zeus-community.net/jom/phpBB3/

There is a generalised set of links to various MP manuals here:

Hi guys,

After about 10 months I just resumed playing Arma2 (i only played it very little before).

I play with a friend of mine online. We want to play coop-games.

However we tend to have problems finding good missions.

There are only very few to select it seems (one being called "civil war" and the other one "super powers").

Are there any downloadable missions that offer some kind of "sandbox" gaming?

What we are looking for:

- the different factions or at least two are fighting a "war" against each other with the ai being the commander of each faction. The ai commanders try taking the villages/towns from each other

- we can play for one faction and are able to buy equipment/units at a base

- we would like to be able to call in airstrikes/artillery

- we would like to have some civilians/wildlife

I know it is possible to this kind of stuff or at least most of it in the editor, but surely someone else did it already and its somewhere for download? Or how about playing the campaign/the scenarios in coop-multiplayer?

Also, are there any coop-missions for two players. By this I dont mean the "war" mode I asked for earlier on but for missions where the enemy doesnt respawn and we have limited ressources?

Last question: Would you recommend us noobs to get the ACE2 mod? Do the added features justify the added complexity? Or does it not make the gameplay more difficult so that we should get it anyway?

Thanks for any answers,

Op. Currywurst

I'm very interested in buying Arma 2 however I'm not sure if I should go for it now or wait for OA. I guess you will need both for most squads that co-op online. But even if I need both I'm hoping there might be a bundle with both games.

What should I do buy now or wait for OA.

If it depends on how I will use it I wan't to mostly play co-op games online with a dedicated squad. I used to play the flight simulator IL-2 Sturmovik with a good squad and that was great fun and now hoping to get the same feeling with this game.

I'm also interested in making missions but I guess I would have to get a feeling for the game first so I can make good balanced oppositions.

When I've made up my mind I will try to find a good squad while I learn the game though I have my eyes on some UTC timezone groups.

@KronikAlkoholik:

Have not heard of the EU publishers plans for marketing a bundled version -no doubt that they will- but Meridian4 (NA pub) has announced that both ArmA II: Operation Arrowhead & ArmA II: Combined Operations (bundle) will be available at launch; June, 29, 2010.

If you plan on sticking with the game you might as well get both at the same time, as you can be sure that 3rd-party maps created post-release of :OA will contain assets from the other.

Then it's pretty much the question of money, should I wait a month hoping to get both cheaper then if I buy ARMA 2 now and OA later. Well that's my problem thanks for the fast answer.
