port fowarding fail

idk why, everytime i try to host my own server, it fails. and I'd try restarting it and it never works. my internet is set for 2302 and all enabled, but still, idk why, it fails

It's not just 2302 that needs to be open, there are others, see Here

Remember that some ports are UDP and TCP, if your hub/router modem won't allow both together, do 2 seperate rules.

Mine works like this. You also have to assign an internal IP for the hosting computer. Mine is currently set to false but you would have to set it to true when hosting.

Depending also on your router. Don't ask me details, some fast connection like optic fiber come with NAT3 (usually for web TV boxes) and that fails. I never succeed to obtain any help of my provider about that. Everybody focus on ports and firewalls but there are plenty of advanced settings, incomprehensible for simple users.

 

@majorstiffy: "enabled false"???

 

What seems to be sure for me, shifting on DMZ makes your PC like a game box, with all open and max vulnerability. It's a bad solution, but working.

The tutorial is a good start but if the hosting PC does not assign a static internal IP (for ex. 192.168.1.108) the router may assign anything on each reboot in which case opening the ports in the router won't work. Google how to assign an internal static IPv4 address.

Some ports have specific applications which are standards throughout the computing industry. When you fetch a web page, for example, it uses port 80. The receiving computer’s software knows that port 80 is used for serving http documents, so it listens there and responds accordingly. If you send an http request over a different port—say, 143—the web server won’t recognize it because it’s not listening there (although something else might be, like an IMAP email server which traditionally uses that port).

There are some extremely weird behaviors. I use to play with my friends, Two of them in the same house with high internet link (100 Mo) and my remote poor 8 Mo internet. We have all opened ports for Arma + Steam, not saying we often use port forwarding or not, just because there is a box to check when creating the internet net.

We play the same hosted mission on one of their computers. The weird thing is when A hosts the mission, there is no problem until we are back to the server page (before looby). Then, A is no more able to re-create an internet host. B & C can't see him in the servers page. But B, on the same wifi Internet can host on his turn. When reloading the mission back to the server link, B can't host it anymore. A can do that sometimes. The solution is to restart all the A and B computers.

 

Just to say, opening all ports you want doesn't make a reliable hosted server.
