The Island

Recommended Posts

Ok the title does not say much... its not supposed to at this point..

For a number of years I have been trying to build a real life island, often hitting many many obstacles, the biggest being elevation data.

Well a few months ago I started to get success in this and even more recently got some lucky strikes.

Now the island IS a real location but for a number of reasons there will be some artistic licence.

The primary locations will be present with as much I can remember, also using various web sources.

The current sat map is a GE one but will need major adjustments to remove visual features not wanted, to remove the 'sea' and also to make the coastline look much better, and in particular replacement of clouds.

In essence I suspect many many many hours of work to make it look as I intend.

Most building will have to be custom built due to the nature of the construction on the island.

Well I suppose you want to know more...

The_Island.jpg

It's at REAL scale, map is 20km with 10m terrain elevation resolution.

It's NOT going to be covered with grass, its volcanic as can be seen my the craters.

Known features...

4 Settlements and an Airhead.

over 30km of roads..

large sea area to North East for naval operations..

3km runway with large apron area

Airfield.jpg

Buildings of the island.

Colonial Era Building, now a bar & restaurant (top floor), and shops (main floor)

ColonialEraBuilding.jpg

The basic prefab houses...

Now as you can see the buildings have a long way to go on the texturing front and details too, such as windows etc.

Timeline on release, got no idea but its been 10 years in planning...

What is yet to come.

5 large Radio Transmitter towers (126m)

Many other small buildings..

Working out how to do the jungle on the mountain yet maintain the rough barreness of the volcanic landscape elsewhere. In fact this island has change so much since I was there that it helps a bit, its greener now, but not much.

So why build a place with one airfield and so little else you may ask??

I turn it round... why not... its a place different to anything out there already.

What you do when its released is your choice, its got lots of potential..

The biggest issue is the need for much tigher than 25 radius roads to get up the mountain..

They been built but I had an interesting affect, I am investigating as its one of the most important features as some vehicles will just not able to go up!

Now we just need a ported version of the Vulcan bomber from ArmA 1!

Looks great btw, custom buildings will be a welcome addition.

I will do my best to make the AI useable but there is no promise at this time.

anyway... the reason I am posting...

That BBC Tower I mentioned... its visually bigger than I expected...

BBCTower.jpg

You see thats a standard electricity pylon beside it (they where used as placeholders until I built the towers).

I had to build the towers in 3 sections.. cos of the sheer height.

Say ... Air Obstacle...

How's Ascension Island status CBFASI?

With all the madness related to the Arma 3 anouncement everybody is a little mad lately here

Like other projects its slow work, I am thinking of going much further with the artistic licence and maybe 'green' the island up, will be more enjoyable in my eyes.
