Goos's British SAS 1.0

Greetings all,

After the release of the British Armed Forces DLC for Operation Arrowhead I was dissapointed to find no special forces units such as the SAS included so I decided to take matters into my own hands and learn to create my first addon. A reskin of the OA Delta units with some additional features which I share with you all now.

Description:

This Addon adds Special forces units to the British Armed Forces Faction of the Special Air Service more commonly known as the S.A.S. which are available in 3 camo types Desert, Multicam and Woodland. All units besides the Automatic Rifleman and Marksman use the desert camo M4's from Operation Arrowhead this will look strange on the Woodland camo units but I wanted this addon to be available to people who just had Operation Arrowhead as well Joint Op. users (besides weapons can be changed in the mission editor). Finally please note this addon is provided as is and I have no current plans of expanding it. This may change but as it stands now this is the finished article.

Features:

All units use custom edited textures for clothing and are available in 3 different camo styles. Desert, Multicam and Woodland. (I tried to match the desert and woodland camos as close to the BAF units as possible)

All units use British Armed Forces DLC content for the likes of voices, faces and some equipment such as grenades and some weapons.

Available units:

Team Leader- (M4,M203)

Automatic Rifleman- (L110A1 LMG)

Demo Specialist- (M4. Carries and can disarm explosives)

Marksman- (L115A3 LRR)

Medic (M4)

Operator- (M4,M203)

Operator (JTAC)- (M4,M203. Carries laser marker and coloured smoke grenades for marking targets)

All units are sorted under their camo type under the BAF faction.

Installation:

Simply extract the @Goos_British_SAS folder and copy it to your arma 2 directory. A bikey file is also in the same folder for server use.

Requirements:

Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead or ArmA 2 Combined Operations

British Armed Forces DLC (In theory the BAF Lite should also work but I have not been able to test this)

Bugs:

None that I am aware of.

Thanks:

Huge thanks to BIS for bringing us this amazing, unique and memorable game.

Also a big thanks to the communty for their support, help and for being one of the best communities around.

So that's how SAS looked in combat uniform? I thought it was much more different.

'tier one' special forces could assume any guise in the pursuit of their aims, even a quick google image search will show the variety inherent in a force that's designed to be inconspicuous; a chap of the type above could easily be mistaken for a royal marine cdo in the combat environment

I would say the guy above is not SF as he has an sa80. These to me still look like yanks, its the helmets I think that do it. If u was able to change the headgear then it would change this from great to awesome. :-)

Congrats on your first release, pretty good looking stuff too! Kinda reminds me of TF Black UKSF :)

Many thanks on the comments guys it's much apreciated.

I hear you on the variation of the models and yes these guys definatly still look like american units A straight reskin of them was never gonna give them that much of a different look no matter how good I could be hehe. These guys were very much just a quick fix in that regard.

That said this is my very first push to creating an addon for the ArmA series and it took me long enough just to learn this much (shockingly enough it took me like 4 months just to get this done) I would love nothing more than to build completely new models and textures from scratch but alas I still lack the knowledge of getting them in game and functional or believe me these would have been very different units :)

Its great that you have done this, what you could also do is change the tops back to a US camo design, and leave the DPM bottoms, so that it looks like the UKSF are working with the US forces, a bit like in these pics.

As like you said these are only re-skins, but only the new Multicam tops are in the same design as American tops. The UK DPM was very different i.e no arm patches for badges and what not.

Hope this helps and I would love to see more of your work in the future :)

Taking into consideration everyones opinions and suggestions both here and on the armaholic forums I'm taking some time to work on these units some more to try and bring them more in line with the British units in their appearance. Also time and will permitting I would ideally like to add lighter patrol based units probably by reskinning the German and Czech SF units. I guess I'll see what I come up with.

Hey Goos,

don't know if this was asked already, but would it be possible to make a replacement CFG for these, to the BAF soldiers ingame are looking like that?

Cause I don't wanna buy this expansion pack just to have some high detailed soldiers :P

Thanks mate,

Jarhead

why wouldnt you want to buy the BAF pack is a great DLC, high quality infantry and vehicles.

Im sure the SAS wouldnt be using DPM anymore, since been replaced by MTP

People buy the expansions because they want to support BI'

not for some silly textures.

why would you support bis if you get nothing back? of course people are buying dlc for the content.

if they merely wanted to support them, they'd donate.

just responding to the whole "Should i pay 10bux for texturez?" statement.

yes you pay for some textures (and extra content already included but in Lite version) but after all, you are supporting BI by buying their products.

How?

Not trying to be a smart arse - Genuinely wondering if there is a "donate" button somewhere that i've missed?

I was under the impression that there is none, and that is why many people (myself included) have bought the game(s) more than once purely because there was no other way to support them.

True some do it so they can have the digital copy, then buy the DVD version when available, but others just simply want to give as much as possible.

So i'd have to agree with Black - Personally i bought both DLCs regardless of what the community had to say about quality or whether it was worth the money, because i know i wanted to support one of the only dev-teams left who support their fans continously.

Just so it's clear in my mind what your asking for is a reskin of the BAF units so you don't have to buy the BAF DLC? The answer to that would be a flat out no I'm afraid for 2 reasons.

The first and obvious reason being if someone reskinned the BAF lite stuff there wouldn't be much point in buying the pack which blatently shoots BIS in the foot and loses them sales and it's safe to say they wouldn't be happy about that. The second reason is I simply can't access the BAF PBO's to even see how they have done stuff in the first place.

At the end of the day if you want something you pay for it and what your asking aint much better than pirating the DLC so I'm afraid I can't be a part of that as much as I would like to do things with the BAF stuff. At any rate it really doesn't cost much for the DLC's so I don't see what the problem is I could go to the local takeaway and spend more money on my dinner than it costs for the DLC and as as people have mentioned already buying them funds BIS which brings us more awesome ArmA goodness ;)

Im sure the SAS wouldnt be using DPM anymore, since been replaced by MTP

This is a point I've thought about and the DPM units were partly there to be in line with the BAF pack also the SAS unlike standard infantry are in the unique position of being able to use pretty much whatever they like. In other words each operative will select the best tools for their job and I dare say DPM is still a very valid camo when it comes to a forest environment I know it is for me. That said though I'm likely to be replacing the multicam with MTP in my next release probably in 2 variations of equipment for mixed desert environment and forest environment. I'm still ironing out the specifics.

Looks like I won't be updating this addon per say but rather creating another in it's place. I posted some WIP details here.
