Please report nasty spammers

Recommended Posts

I noticed this several times in the past:

Spambot hits the forums and instead reporting that scum immediately people reply to their crap. Honestly what for, increasing your postcount temporary (as the threads sooner or later are deleted)?

Please, report spambots immediately instead replying to their posts.

Given the fact that it takes some time for mods to respond to reports (and yes I make use of the report feature right away when these things appear), is there anything wrong with replying in the meantime just to identify it as spam so others don't waste time replying to it? Like you said, it's just gonna be deleted anyways.

Well it's pointless, not more not less. The problem is that (some) of the people recently replied to their crap hasn't reported them at all. At some time there were 4 or 6 replies and not one of them reported it actually - that's what I actually wanted to say. ;)

I haven't noticed any spam bots on the forums, I see loads of them on stuff like Facepunch (Garrys Mod) and other forums, not on here though:confused:

It's a long shot, but I'm guessing mods are deleting spam before you see it.

:yeahthat:

Once reported and one of us Mods around it takes only seconds to remove the spam and ban the sucker.

That's why it is important everyone reports them instead feeding them. ;)

Most spam bots as we know them in the automated sense don't make it through the forum's defences, the majority of what you see as "spam bots" are actual people sat somewhere in India/Thailand/China/Africa manually signing up to the forums, making a couple of posts and then "planting" a spammy url in their signature.

The lulz I'd imagine.

On a similar vain but from a different perspective, if the thread and all it's posts are going to be deleted, does it really matter if people reply to it?

That just looks a bit stupid, if someone is replying to any shit like those spamcrap, thats the only thing I´d guess would be the matter. But that wasn´t the point Wolle has stated, it´s just about to report spams, not more and not less. If you want to reply, so have fun with this, but make sure to report those things.

No forum is immune these days as the term "spambots" is really a misnomer, it's more likely people sat in offices in India and Thailand and China and the like getting paid to manually sign up to forums and post spam.

Yea but I still call them spambots. :)

And he struck again... same guy I think, well he's posting the same spam at least about Apple Ipads... I bet it's Steve Jobs himself.

Probably a template they got and just copy&paste.

Changed the thread title just for Placebo. :p

However I still call them spambots as such a stupid work is inhuman, hence bots. :D

If there's a template, can't you automatically flag up suspicious posts using the commonly used words?

Or you can also use .htaccess to make rules, using RewriteEngine on, RewriteCond, RewriteRule etc

I.E

# -------------------------------------------
# START of Prevent proxy access
# -------------------------------------------
RewriteCond %{HTTP:VIA} !^$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP:FORWARDED} !^$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP:USERAGENT_VIA} !^$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP:X_FORWARDED_FOR} !^$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP:PROXY_CONNECTION} !^$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP:XPROXY_CONNECTION} !^$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP:HTTP_PC_REMOTE_ADDR} !^$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP:HTTP_CLIENT_IP} !^$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ - [F]
# -------------------------------------------
# END of Prevent proxy access
# -------------------------------------------

This one can you just add into the htaccess file:

No forum is immune these days as the term "spambots" is really a misnomer, it's more likely people sat in offices in India and Thailand and China and the like getting paid to manually sign up to forums and post spam.

If only the job paid more than a buck 50 it would be every slacker's dream job. :p

The spammers of today's wave of spammers were atrocious. I offered multiple to send my credit card details via PM, but got no reply.

Children these days just don't work for the money like they used to.

Spampads? That makes them sound like some kind of feminine hygiene product! ;) A worse name than "red river" FPDR

I think spambots still applies perfectly to someone so robot-like that they spend their time posting spam on forums and getting paid $1 a month.
