The sound problem
I have a 5.1 SB Live! card.
When playing ArmA2 it looks like the game is forcing the sound in 5 channel mode (or so it seems) despite 2 speaker configuration being set both in drivers and windows sound manager. When the sound source is in front of me it's very silent. When it's somewhere behind me it can't be heard at all while when it's to the left or right I can hear it just fine. I remember having something like this in OFP and AA1 too although it was fixed by simply turning the sound hardware acceleration off. However in AA2 the option seems to be missing. So can it be because of HW acceleration always on in AA2 or the game forcing the sound into 5 channel mode? And how to counter it (perhaps some config string or something)? |

Sounds like you've got Matrix mode activated, or an upmix effect. Check on your speakers for a matrix button and make sure it's off, also check your audio cards control software and make sure any effects are turned off. This includes such things as CMSS and Crystalizer (Soundblaster/X-Fi)

I think I found a workaround. Even though the system was configured as above only disabling the central and rear-stereo outputs on the soundcard via the driver forced AA2 to use a proper stereo.
