    CTD with i7@4GHz

    hi there.
I have a pretty strange problem...
When I have my i7 920 CPU OCed to 4GHz, the game crashes right after I start the game..
But it works fine with the CPU at 3.9GHz...

Any suggestions? not home atm, so can't ul any files until tomorrow if needed.

    specs
    GTX 470 SLI
    Intel i7 920
    Gigabyte x58 ud5
    6GB Corsair Dominator GT

    thx

Yeah keep it @ 3.9Ghz, it's not like those 100Ghz is gonna change anything anyways.

Not strange at all - you reached your OC limit at 3.9 GHz.

Yeah OCing and 3D apps are much harder to do than just benchmarking progs to find your limit. I Gage my OC by playing games. I have had hours of Benchmark runs no issues at 4.4-4.6(i7 on air), but Arma2 will only love the 4.2... I could do alot more tweaks and such but that would be a lot more reboots, and a lot less gaming.

k well, I find it kinda weird that only ArmA 2 would dislike it...
4 is such a nice number, but I'll keep it at 3.9

I know how you feel, I really wanted to push my 920 to 4 GHz, but it just wouldn't do it. It was almost stable with 3.9, but I didn't feel like pushing the voltage any higher so I left it at 3.8.

I have a C0 stepping model, which is the first one, and apparently ~3.8 GHz is pretty much the max for these.

Also, as far as ArmA2 not liking it, this is a very CPU-intensive game, a lot more so than most other games. The best way to test a CPU overclock for stability is to run something like Prime95 for 30+ minutes to make sure.
    Core i7 920 @ 3.995 GHz, HT off
    12 GB OCZ DDR3-1600
    GTX 680
    2x Intel X25-M 80 GB SSD
    Windows 7 Pro x64

    ArmA2/OA Settings:
    1920x1080 w/ View Distance at ~3600
    Video Memory at Default
MSAA Very High, AToC=0, SMAA Ultra
    Post Processing at Very Low
All other settings at Very High

Nothing weird about it. Unlike things such as Prime that only test CPU/Memory stability, games test the machine as a 'unit' as it were. OCing breeds instability by nature, you are running your machine outside of the recommended spec and different games react in different ways where OCing is concerned.

As JW said, the good news is that there will be very little (if any) difference between 3.9 and 4.0Ghz

Dont worry i have the same problem with my phenom... only difference is that mine stocked on 3,7 ghz. I pas prime 95 with 100% stable on 3.8 but in complex game arma 2 its crashing. Which os you using? If you using 64 bit os you always can reach smaller stable ovecloack then on 32 bit systems ...
    Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P
    AMD 965 oc 3.7 ghz
    Ati 6970 2 gb
    G-skill 1800 8-8-8-24
    PSU corsair 850 w
    Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit
