I get this message on boot and anytime I try to add anything in the editor.
What is it? How can I fix/get rid of it?

yeah, that's the first thing I thought, so tried vanilla and still does it. I'm baffled.

Fixed - found a whacked out .pbo file in my Addons directory that must have got unzipped during a mod install.
