Mouse lag.. is this really part of the game?

Ok this is a last-ditch attempt to get some play out of the game.

My system is WinXP, Q9650 Core2 Quad 3ghz, 4Gb RAM, XFX GTX260 Black Edition. My mouse is a Logitech MX518 and the driver is the regular windows 'HID-compliant mouse'.

I've set up my Nvidia drivers to force v-sync off, with max pre-rendered frames set to 1.

I'm running Arma II patched to 1.04 and set to the lowest possible graphic detail. I have the aiming deadzone set to 0.

Every action in-game feels clumsy, imprecise, and 'floaty', because even having taken all the above measures, there's still a very, very perceptible delay between me moving the mouse and the crosshair catching up.

This is really ruining the game for me. There's no way in hell I can shoot at something and hit it, because by the time the crosshair's caught up to where I'm trying to aim, the target's disappeared behind a tree or building!

I don't have this problem in any other game (although in some cases it's necessary to switch off v-sync to get there, but which I've done in this case as well).

I've read up a load of posts on various forums on this, and have seen a few replies along the lines of 'the game introduces a delay to simulate realism'. I can't say I buy into that whole line of argument, as a) I could do better at pointing something at something else than the game's allowing me to, and b) the game's simulating someone that undoubtedly has far better reactions and training than I!

    But maybe they're right anyway...

So my question is, is there some way to get rid of this mouse lag, or should just I cut my losses and uninstall?

have you messed with mouse smoothing in the game options menu?

The only time I notice any "lag" at all is when I slam my mouse around my screen like in a regular FPS

Question, does a monitor spec like 'response time'? 2ms or 4ms have any effects?

No, it's the input lag which ranges from 0-100ms depending on monitor. TN monitors usually have around 30 max.

Pardon the ignorance, but what's a TN monitor? I know there's LCD monitor and CRT monitor...

response time is basically how fast each pixel goes from on to off, and vice verse. The faster the response time, the less 'ghosting', or blur on your monitor during fast changes in graphics. It doesn't affect the input on a system

it's the same as a TFT monitor IIRC

A panel type in an LCD monitor. TN is the fastest, but has worst image quality.

as asked already what is your mouse smoothing set to???

less smoothing means less delay/float in the on screen feel of the game.

Try it with no smoothing and work your way up....

Re mouse-smoothing, thanks guys, I hadn't noticed that setting, and switching it down to zero has helped a lot - I can now play with no mouse lag at all at min detail.

(Although to get the same responsiveness at some of the higher vid settings I have to look at the ground.. seems this is one resource-hungry game!).

Going to tweak settings etc and look for a good compromise, but it's good to know that a playable config is possible!

Also, goto the nVidia control panel->3d settings and try adjusting your "Max-prerendered frames" setting. A lower setting (1 or 2) is usually good for removing mouse lag, a higher setting gives you smoother feeling at lower frame rates, meaning that with your setting currently on 1 it may feel a little less smooth, so try raising to see if you can get smoother gameplay without mouse lag.
