Just make it short by providing CPU , GPU , and RAM memory :D , those three are the most important thing. Your current GPU 8600 GTS is slightly above minimum requirement for ArmA II which is 7900 GT , and of course below optimum requirement which is 8800 GT . I need to know what settings in game did you have ? please list it here :)

I have read a lot of the posts here and see that there is definitely a common thread in all the issues - mainly FPS.

I do not believe this is related to the CPU's but a video issue.

Personally, I am running Arma2: RFT version 1.59.79385 so I think I have all the expansions inside.

My PC is nowhere near as powerful as some of yours but I do know the difference between fluid movement and FPS lag.

I am running a dual core AMD 2x 3.5, ATI Catalyst HD 4200, with 4 gig RAM on Windows 7 Home (yes it all sucks but it's what I got to work with :).

That should be at or over spec for this game.

So here's what I tried and what I got:

Arma works in a massive sandbox folks. This isn't Doom or some other first person shooter with narrow pathing and 2D walls.

So the beatings begin BECAUSE of the sandbox. I can't believe no one from Bohemia hasn't come in here and discussed this yet.

This is just a baseline starting point you can improve on.

First CUT your Visibility down to less than 600 meters. I bottomed out mine at 500. Yes we all like to see everything but that's adding processing points the further out you go. If you think you can make a 2 kilometer shot, then go for it my friends.

Once that's done, try starting at advanced options such as:

Quality Preference - Normal

Interface Resolution - 800 x 600

3D Resolution - 960 x 720

Textures - Normal

Video memory - Default

Anisotropic filtering - Disabled

Antialiasing - Disabled

Terrain Detail - Normal

Object Detail - Normal

Shadow Detail - Disabled

HDR - Normal

Postprocessing - Disabled

Interface Size - Large

Aspect Ratio - 16:9 Wide

Vsync - Disabled.

Like I said this is BASELINE.

The lower RES settings are for the GAME. Your newer video cards will still honk really nice visuals out, you just have to slow the amount of data GOING TO THEM (unless of course you own some alien other universe pc system no human can operate).

With these settings, the game loads fair, moves quick and I can drive through Zargabad like a drunken sailor on a 3-day shore leave.

Now for the trees. Yes, they look nice - no, they do NOTHING for processing speed. You will most likely experience MAX FPS in the desert or isolated areas without them, so git yer ass to the dunes my friends.

Basically, if you can't turn and fire as fast as the computer AI can, yer a dead man/woman/mutant.

So try these and work your way up GRADUALLY in the Advanced video options to see what works best for you.

Hope this helps someone, will "monkey" with other settings and see whattup.

Thanks all.....and cheers

Hey, so i bought Arma 2 and Operation Arrowhead today on steam but the most time its unplayable for me.

I have an i7-2600 3,4GHz, 8GB RAM and a GTX 580 and it doesnt matter if i take low, medium or high settings - i always get the same fps.

Like in the first mission of Operation Arrowhead where you get out of the helicopter, i get about 26 fps. When i look into another direction then suddenly 80 fps, then another direction 130 fps, then again 30 and so on.

And this is getting really on my nerves because you shoot at some guys, everything ok. Then you try to aim at 2 other npcs that are 25 meters on the left and suddenly all the 80 fps are gone...

I tested all the graphic options. And like i said, i can switch the textures from normal to very high - fps doesnt change. I can switch hdr from normal to high - fps doesnt change .. and so on.

I bought the game via steam so its self updating.

I run the game in 1920x1080 (100%) Vsync off

The benchmarks in Arma 2: Benchmark 1 average 75 fps, Benchmark 2 average 24 fps.

When i'm in the game and look into the task manager the cpu usage is 0%.

I really like this game but running around in citys with 25 fps is horrible.

What can i do for better performance?

(i mean the i7 2600 is one of the highest cpu's at this time and the gtx 580 is the 2nd best nvidia card at this time, so there is nothing to upgrade now)

(on what machine did the developers played/tested this?)

Probably your only real option is to overclock your CPU...hopefully you got the -K version?

Other than that, not much else you can do. You're probably always going to see some slowdown in large cities with a lot of AI.

Visibility: i tried everything from 1600 to 3000.

Texture Detail: i tried everything from normal to very high (the fps in fraps doesnt change)

Video Memory: Default or Very high (Fps doesnt change)

Anisotropic Filtering: i tried everything from low to very high (fps doesnt change)

Antialising: Normal (this takes effect on fps when i put it on high or very high)

Terrain: i tried everything from normal to very high (fps doesnt change)

Object Details: i tried everything from normal to very high (very high is 3 fps slower then normal)

Shadow Detail: i tried everything from disabled to very high (no shadow is about 5 fps better then high. there is no fps change between high and very high)

HDR Quality: i tried everything from normal to high (no fps changes between normal and high, very high is about 5 fps slower)

Postprocess Effects: low (this is the only thing where the fps really change. very high in desert areas = 80 fps. low = 140 fps. in cities unplayable with very high. on low about 25 - 35 fps.

Interface Size: Normal

Aspect Ratio: 16:9 widescreen (24")

Vsync: disabled

(i mean the i7 2600 is one of the highest cpu's at this time and the gtx 580 is the 2nd best nvidia card at this time, so there is nothing to upgrade now)

(on what machine did the developers played/tested this?)

I mentioned this in my earlier post (which BTW seems to have gone unnoticed).

It's not your PC or your hardware. It's the game. Go into Advanced video options and cut your VISIBILITY down to 500 (the bottom).

This isn't about how good your vid card is, I'm sure it cranks really good. Unfortunately, the game is stuffing too much data into it than our poor human made copper-based IO can handle.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say that as soon as some A-hole figures out how to build a glass-fiber IO board, we will have to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous programming.

If the visibility fix doesn't help, then I would suggest killing all the advanced video options in the game (and let the vid card take control).

Even at the lowest game options, your vid card will still rock.

I know, we ALL can't have 4000 meter view like "some" people :)

Anyhoo, In a perfect world we are crosshatched with imperfect products.

Welcome to capitalism.

@johntekk

On my pc gpu-z causes stutter when it runs so might want to turn that off. Are you running the latest patch? (that's 1.6)

Another neat "trick" is to go to the nvidia control panel, somewhere in there you can set driver options per game. Put pre-rendered frames on 0. normally this is 3 or something but that causes an unbearable delay when fps is low. This doesnt increase fps but makes the game more direct on low fps.

Im having weird performance issues since 1.60.

Rig is:

Phenom x6 1100T 3,3Ghz

8 GB Dual Channel 1600mhz

6870 1GB

1TB SATA Samsung

Everything ran fine before 1.6. Drivers are updated and nothing else changed.

When playing Warfare after some minutes the GFX FPS is getting lower as time progresses in the match. It doesnt matter if i have low settings or Very High. The fps is exactly the same. Also it looks like Arma2 is only using 1 Core since the latest patch. Tried extreads settings etc. nothing helped.

try the new beta. it uses a different memory allocator. that may be your problem.

Also... empty your MP mission cache. This is an old trick. After a while the cache will get huge and that is also, or was, loaded when the game starts.

By the way this game is extremely CPU and HDD heavy! VERY FAST CPU AND HDD! Video card is not that important.

here is a picture of some tools while the game is running.

http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/8851/armae.jpg

the performance of the game is no fun.

A2/OA is a very ambitious game and therefore requires much more resources than most other, simpler, games.

So to enjoy smooth gameplay (>25fps) without making it look like a Wii-game, I recommend trying these tweaks before undertaking anything serious (overclocking and/or upgrading):

a) Ensure you're running the latest official patch, which is 1.11 for A2, 1.62 for OA (if you're unsure, the build number is displayed at the bottom right-hand corner of the menu screen). Also, check-out the latest beta patches as they always offer improvements!

b) Edit OA's config file (something like My Documents\ArmA2\Arma2OA.cfg), find AToC=7 and change it to AToC=0

c) add the -nologs parameter to the target line of your shortcut to A2 (a new flag that prevents your client from writing errors to the RPT file. This reduces disk activity and makes the game run faster. You miss any non-crash errors which, unless you're debugging, is fine), e.g.

"E:\ArmA 2\Expansion\beta\arma2oa.exe" -beta=Expansion\beta;Expansion\beta\Expansion -mod=ACR;@CBA_CO;@WarFX-BC;@JSRS;@RHS;@lingor;@Podagorsk;@panthera; -nosplash -nologs

d) Tweak OA's in-game Video Settings (Options > Video > Advanced)

Visibility: 1600-3800m <= has biggest impact so try lowering as much as possible

Interface: 100%

3D res: 100%

Tex: Very High

Vid mem: Default

Anisotropic: Normal or Higher

Antialiasing: disabled, if this hurts your eyes use PPAA instead, I recommend SMAA

Terrain: Normal

Objects: Normal or Higher

Shadows: High or Very High

HDR: Normal or Higher

Post-proc: Low, Very Low or even Off

V-Sync: Disabled(particularly for Radeons), unless you get tearing

e) Try these mods to gain a few fps without sacrificing too much eye-candy:

- Oktane's noBlur (allows you to enable Low Post-Proc without the nausea-inducing and performance sapping "blur" effect)

- Dynamic View Distance (reduces and increases your view distance to ensure good framerates, fully configurable, with option for pilots)

- PROPER Visual Tweaks for Vegetation & Buildings

- SAP Clutter

- GDT grass

f) Clean out the crap - I recommend CCleaner as it's free, light and efficient

g) Defrag what's left - I recommend Defraggler as it's free, light and efficient

h) Close other programs (browsers, IM, etc.) & minimise your services - Game Booster is your friend

i) Update your PC's drivers. Driver Booster is a free, efficient and spyware-free utility saves you the time and effort of searching for them.

j) if your CPU is an Intel Core i7 and OA stutters, try disabling the HT (Hyper-Threading) via the BIOS

k) Catalyst settings for sparkle-free Anisotropic Filtering

Thanks for your efforts mate, but my rig was doing just fine prior to 1.60. Ive tested some Domination and it works ok. My issue seems to be related to Bennys Warfare mission. Gonna ask Benny himself about it.

Benny's (WASP) Warfare runs pretty decent for me (and I'm a FPS-whore, I hate stutter). Except for some days the framerate drops after a while and only recovers after a complete restart of the game, a friend was experiencing the same at the same time, while others didn't.

Anyone any idea what this supposed to do?

I mean i kinda get the picture but anyone tried it, can recommend different values better?

GPU_MaxFramesAhead=1000;

It's similar to the pre rendered frames you can set in nvidia control panel. Basically a buffer to mask small stutters. I dont know what 1000 does, but I recommend something really low like 0 to 2. High ammounts of pre rendered frames causes input lag.

Shadow Detail: i tried everything from disabled to very high (no shadow is about 5 fps better then high. there is no fps change between high and very high)

turn off ht on your bios and add this on your short cut: -winxp -nosplash -maxmem=2047 -cpuCount=4 -exThreads=7 see if helps... -winxp always gives me like 20-30 extra fps.

Cheers for clarification. Played with settings a bit, changed couple values and the difference is really significant...big time actually :)

When i start the game, the main first screen had a lag to it. im guessing thats cause i messed around with my gaming options in my AMD control center. I thought i'd get a better picture and a nice smooth 3D rendering. Well it was total oposite. So i went back into my computer setting and defaulted my AMD gameing options. i opened the game back up. By the way i, only running arma2. i havent even been passed the first screen of the game yet. Can anyone help my so i can play this game with no lag and some sort of 3D rendering. Im a nooby to all this, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. My system is

  • AMD M880G w/ Mobility Radeon HD 4250
  • CPU: AMD Turiom II P560 Dual-Core Processor, 2.5GHz Performance Rated at:4.63GHz
  • RAM: 2.8GB
  • OS: Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 64-bit

sorry kilo11, running arma on that system isnt really possible, check the link in my sig below. The gpu is way below system requirements, you might be able to play a bit with the editor, on island utes with all settings at minimum.

Anyways, if you want to play something similar, try the original "operation flashpoint, cold war crisis", they renamed it "arma, cold war assault". That should run great.

Also, rainbow six ravenshield is awesome on those kind of systems.

I fear you just have an underpowered system. Arma is a huge hardware hog. You hardware is just a little on the weak side for Arma's liking.

Well since im new to PC gaming, and this being my first laptop ever. Is it possible to buy/upgrade my video card and install more RAM. Would that improve the game at all? If it would, then i'll just put everything to the lowest setting for now and just deal with it untill i can afford to upgrade my laptop. That looks like that would be the way to go right?

You can upgrade RAM in a laptop, but you can't really upgrade the GPU. It's possible, but not very fun....

You have to find the right GPU to fit into your laptop.

I would recomend saving up to $1,000 and then custom build yourself a desktop computer. It is very cheap to build a high-powered desktop computer yourself.

Case

Motherboard

Power Supply

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)

Sound Card (Most motherboards now days have pretty good sound on board.)

Hard Drive

DVD Reader/Writer

Mouse

Keyboard

Speakers

22" Monitor

You may need a bit more money to get really good gear. About $1,500 would probably cover it all.

I have a few questions about various problems I have had with arma. I absolutely love the game, and want to submerge myself in it a little deeper. The problem is, I have yet to get it to run properly. Sometimes Arma runs great, and other times it crashes. I played last night for four hours without any problems. I went to play today and it crashed within five minutes. It just says program stopped working. It locks up my mouse and I have to go to task manager. First off I bought reinforcements, but I found out that I needed arma 2 for the more expansive multiplayer modes. This forced me to buy combined ops from sprocket. So I uninstalled reinforcements and installed the sprocket version of combined ops. System = intel ® core (im) i3 cpu 530@2.93 GHz. Installed Memory (ram) 2.00GB. 64 bit. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti. Primary monitor resolution 1176/664. Does anyone have a solution to my problem? Is it the Sprocket version? Should I just install sprocket Arma 2 and then reinforcements to arma 2 directory? Will that still permit me to play on servers running lite versions? Is there something I need to do to optimize? I really need some help. Thanks in advance.

dunno if i am alone in this issue, but I seem to get extremely low performance in official campaigns. I get at least 40~ 60 fps even in the most involved environment( and 110 fps in relatively less complex settings) in the mission editor, but it goes right down to ~20 in the 2nd and 3rd mission of Harvest Red. All the latest drivers applied, all the components OCed by reasonable amount, newest patches applied. (excluding OA 1.6, which is still in its RC state).

Here are my specs:

CPU:Phenom II 1090t @ 3.8Ghz

Mobo:M3A32

RAM:2G*2 DDR2-800

video card: Zotac GTX560 extreme OCed to 1Ghz core, 1.2Ghz memory, 2Ghz shader.

PSU: Cooler Master GX-650W Bronze(those made with new OEM)

OS: win 7 64 bit

Thanks in advance. It seems that at least 60% of all my posts are for asking for help:p

EDIT: lowering graphics settings does little.

EDIT:It feels CPU related. However, this lousy mobo cant really take all 6 cores up to 4Ghz or higher. Would Blocking 2 cores and OC to 4Ghz+ help?(As I've heard that this game uses only 4 cores)
