When does a bullet reach its top speed?

Recommended Posts

If a bullet leaves a barrel (lets say... from a sniper rifle), is it leaving the barrel at its fastest speed? Or does it gain speed for a little bit and then begin to slow down? Probably a dumb question because of air resistance and all that... but It's just something I've been pondering. I figured yall would be the best group of folks to ask.

Begins to slow down immediately, though not at the same rate constantly. The barrel provides a place to accelerate without obstacles, which ends when it leaves the barrels, and many factors come into play.

I think that typically one would expect it to be at its highest velocity at the muzzle, with the exception of gyrojet rounds.

Alright. I've been looking at some real life videos and comparing them to other video games (as well as Arma2)...

And I find that in Arma2, its the exact opposite with the M107. Video later.

The velocity is highest at the muzzle, and decreases steadily due to drag. If the bullet is shot at an angle between 0-90degrees relative to the horizontal ground so that the trajectory forms an arch, the vertical component of velocity will be zero at the highest point in the arch. The bullet may accelerate again due to gravity but will not reach the same speed as the muzzle velocity if all the ground is at the same level.
