AI is realistic. It does not see everything.

Recommended Posts

I made a video to demonstrate how cool ambushes are and how the AI is not too smart. They are realistically smart. They cannot see very well in night without NV goggles. This is on Regular mode

I'd like people to see this because people often think that the AI is this all seeing god.

I can imagine that the "smartness" of the AI also depends on their level of "situational awareness" which you might give it in the editor. But I am just playing the demo - so I am not sure about it.

yeah it depends on the difficulty setting obviously. On the highest level they are all seeing gods.

This is not what I was trying to say. However it is obvious to recognize why the AI is reacting better then real people when the real people are running around like ducks looking for bushes as cover and already shooting without any targets in their sights or waiting for anyone to get into their position before shooting.

The problem is that no matter what AI difficulty you use, player still needs to use his/her eyes, AI doesn't.

The AI does 'see', but the world it sees is not as complex as the one that the player sees. What it 'sees' is also mitigated by config values of how easy stuff is for the AI to see.

Judging the AI sight at night isn't enough to judge overall gameplay imo. Personally i prefer to play with skill down to 0.5 to get decent gameplay atm, maybe BIS will change AI settings later on.

Although i really dunno why ppl are complaining, i mean it's not like AI performance is the only problem with ArmA2 atm. Low FPS when zooming through vegetation while in an AI intensive campaign mission is actually much more important to fix imo. I hate to set objects to LOW and staring at ugly bushes.

Well, the demonstration is great, but what I found strange was that the guerrila soldier most likely saw him (you can hear him saying: "Man in mid-range on the right") but didn't react to it. Maybe he failed to recognise him as "enemy man" and therefore no reaction was required. Dunno, maybe if the AI were in a combat mode, it would be more suspicious.

Try fire at a jeep so it knows you are around, then seek cover and try flank it or sneak up to it... i promise you it knows exactly where you no matter how hard you tried sneaking around... hmmmm xray vision perhaps!

the AI is an all hearing god :D

I made some small tests and the AI hears my footsteps at unrealistic distances imo, even if I am walking slowly. There is basically no stealth possible.

They can also hear me running even if I put a moving T-72 next to them. And they also have an IFF function associated with their hearing ability (even if they can't see me the leader will say 'engage that man').

ps: I wish I could hear the movements of AI soldiers at the same distances they can hear mine, at least...

Well that's nice to see.

I guess sometimes the AI gets some kind of accuracy/awareness buff because I suffered through hell in Manhattan.

I was looking for Cheadaki camps on the hills west of Manhattan and suddenly all my team got blown up. There was no indication of enemy presence on the map. Just the sound of pew pew pew pew pew BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM! It was very dramatic I will admit that!

It stopped being dramatic after it happened 15 more times but I am not going to cry about it!

At some point I managed to find a place where the enemy fire could not reach me and started searching around.

I found it very far away and behind the cover of trees.

One of those Chedaki jeeps with grenade launchers.

I managed to kill the gunner and proceeded to the camp only to be killed again and again by some invisible dude. Invisible to me because he could see me fine behind trees, bushes and rocks.

I couldn't see shit. No muzzle flash or smoke. I thought I reached a trigger death area to be honest.

So yeah, sometimes during the campaign something happens and enemies become godlike sharpshooters.

I copy that. AI is definately not aware of the player's location all that time, but on the contrary side I have noticed other strange things like AI shooting/seeing/walking through fences, walls and houses. I can only assume that there are incorrect LODs in certain objects so AI is able to view through them. It's a shame and a pain, but not always the fault of the AI.

By the way ... sometimes it's fun to watch the AI trying to guess where the player is :D Especially if the AI is using a Bm-21 Grad firing at some houses where they think the player could be :D

"realistically smart? - Simply WRONG. Under some conditions AI is reacting somehow "realistic", but in general not at all, because AI is not learning at all. You get them always with the same lame tactics. Just cannon fodder.

AI contains plenty of bugs, design oddities making AI sometime God-like:

http://dev-heaven.net/issues/show/2067

and sometimes idiot-like:

http://dev-heaven.net/issues/show/1750

So be careful when you describe/rate BIS-AI routines, be very specific when describing the environment/setp before you come to a conclusion.

And after the next patch, AI behavior will obviously change - fortunately

People are never happy :)

A2 AI >>>>> A1 AI

And I've seen zero AI in other game able to function that well in completely open and movement-free environnement.

There's plenty room for improvement, bug fixing, etc... But it's not "crap", far from it

I actually agree with that, they run like chickens with their heads cut off and sometimes stop to look at the flare. When they see your muzzle flash, they engage the area, but not as accurately as in daytime. But during the day they can locate a prone figure next to a tree trunk at 600m and score a headshot off the back of a moving vehicle using a .50 machinegun.
