*Joint Task Force HQ*
*Near the coast of Podagorsk*
A former British overseas territory, Podagorsk was constantly under threat of Soviet invasion during the Cold War, both due to its rich mineral deposits and its strategic location near Chernarus. Regaining full independence in 1992, the local government gradually aligned with Russia and eventually became a key regional staging post for the Russian airforce.
After of the failure of the Russian backed coup in Chernarus, a mutiny on board the Udaloy class destroyer Admiral Levchenko was the spark to trigger an internal power struggle within the Russian armed forces, resulting in a breakaway force of Russian naval infantry supported by the destroyer taking control of the peninsula, seizing the airfield and issuing a set of unassailable demands. The Russian government is denying involvement in the action and to save face has reached out to the British government for assistance.
In a statement this week, the British Foreign Secretary confirmed that a Joint Task Force spearheaded by elements of 16 Airborne Assault Brigade and 1st Battalion The Volunteer Commandos has been deployed to the region on board HMS Illustrious. Further details are being witheld for reasons of operational security.
