Thread: Will my PC Run this? What CPU/GPU to get? What settings? System Specifications.

thanks for the help froggyluv. I wanted to get the i7 2600k but I did not know at the time when I bought my mobo that the processor had to match the socket on the mobo lol.

When I started to look at processors the i7 960 seemed like a good one. For somebody who always had to game on a laptop, I think I will be happy
    CPU: Intel i7 960 @ 3.2Ghz | MB: Evga x58 FTW3 | RAM: 8GB Corsair XMS3 | GPU: Nvidia GTX 570 1.5gb | PSU: Professional Series Gold AX850 Watt Modular |Display: SAMSUNG 23" Full HD LED 1080p | Saitek X52 | TrackIR 5|

Strange, maybe its because on X58 you can run tri-sli / crossfire. The 960 has more memory bandwith and hyperthreading but those things dont really help in games.

    Needs more rainbow six 1-3

Should be decent and oh, if you get arma to run stable with that 4.7 OC, please lend me your settings

Hello again everyone, I'm caught in a pickle again...lol

Here was the Mobo I've been looking at for a while.

    UNTIL:

    I found this one

Now, both of these are SLI Ready, and Support AM3 Cpu's and support X6's (which is probably what I'm gonna get, cpu wise).

    BUT, I had some questions about them...The Asus one says... 2 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (single @ x8; dual @ x8/x8 mode)

    While the Gigabyte one says... PCI Express 2.0 x16 3 (x16, x8, x4)

Now, Is there a big difference between using X8, compared to x16? (Both of the Mobo's use X8 in SLI)...But for now, I'm sticking to this one card, so would X8 be a lot different than x16? Or does it not matter much? (Gaming wise).

Also, Might as well ask now

But, Would the AMD Phenom II X6 1100T BE (3.3GHZ, but 3.7 Ghz Turbo Charged) be better than a AMD Phenom II X4 980 BE (3.7 GHZ)...I'm talking about Future proofing it, because if the X4 has only a slight performance upgrade from the X6, Then I'll just go with the X6...Since 6 cores will be better future wise.

The first one is an am3+ motherboard, that means you'll be able to run bulldozer cpu's with it once they come out. Just take GA-990XA-UD3 motherboard and combine it with a Phenom II X4 955 BE. That way you'll have an affordable and well-performing rig with the possibility for real upgrades in the future without having to replace everything again.

Sixcores are useless in gaming and most other things, save exceptions like video/audio transcoding, raytracing etc.

All mainstream boards are x8 x8, fine for 2 way sli or crossfire, x16 x16 only gains 2% or so, or even less.

4 cores are fine as far as gaming goes today, but implying 6 cores are 'useless' is just plain bad information.

First off, more threads for more processes is obviously better than less threads and there are games that do use 6 cores (BC2 and L4D2 being two off the top of my head). With AMD and Intel producing 8 core CPUs and beyond you will see more and more games start to use more than 4 cores, so while it may not be that well implemented today, engines like Frostbite 2 (BF3) can use up to 8 cores IIRC, so a 6 core is a way better choice providing the price isn't a huge issue.

Thanks for the replies...So I take it that gigabyte Board is better ...and about that X16 X16, thanks for clarifying that, I was about to post another Board that was actually x16 x16, but I'll go with the newer Gigabyte Board .

and about the processors, I know the Quad Core may be better now, for games that utilize only 4 cores now, but like BangTail said, in the future I'd be better equipped with the 6 Core one ...and it's only 20-30 bucks more than a 980 BE ...So, that's not an issue.
