    I think I might have the best answer to the question:

    Since 2001 when the first OFP unofficial PBO addons were released, I have not seen ANY reports of PBOs harboring malware. And I've been downloading these addons since Ebud's first US Army rangers retex of the resistance soldiers with boonie hats.

    Here's a little checklist for your convenience

    If you have anything important on your system, you:
    1. Always have up-to-date backups
    2. Have up-to-date firewall and anti-virus software
    3. Don't play games and download mods on it

    If your that concerned simply use an un-pbo tool, virus scan the extracted folder ... if not problems = no problems.

    The only time is someone being smart and making a map or something asking people to test and using and installer.exe to install the mod, then you can still virus scan it.
