Thread: Voice Recognition

  1. #1
Nothing too important, but I was playing with Vista's voice recognition engine, and it works rather well.

Then I thought : why not use it in Arma 2 ? It would be a nice little plus for commanding on your PC and even more on consoles where you lack the keyboard : you could just dictate "all get back in formation" etc...

I think that the microsoft speech recognition engine is free to download if you don't already have it. Then you have freewares like "shoot 1.6" which let you do the key binding.

Arma already has voice input for VOIP, so you'd only need to add something like the shoot freeware at startup to get it rolling...

Great idea to use software like 'Shoot' alongside ArmA - if it works well and works together? Can you set a keystroke to switch it on, or make it listen on command with a key-hit?

Can't see the point myself of adding it to the program itself though: many times I've tried to use this in other games (EECH2 is a recent implementation), and using external key-binding programs, and they never seem to work very well no matter how much time I spend training them.

[ p.s. I'd find it quite funny using teamspeak with some speech-recognition engine on at the same time... Arrrrgh, [insert swear word here] off, Oh SHI*, etc, could be quite amusing if the animations could match it..lol ]

Actually, there's a Flashpoint profile already available for Shoot.

I made a post in Interface Discussion regarding voice recognition acouple months ago:

I also hope that BIS includes and realtime speech recognition option in Arma 2, where the player can speak into a microphone and the AI will listen, as seen here:

    http://www.flashpoint1985.com/cgi-bin....t=71168

It would make the game much more interesting and it could serve as a selling point to make this game unique, especially when compared to OFP2. Though, as I recall, Tom Clancy's EndWar will also have voice recognition. Come on BIS, you've got to show them how it's done right. ***

EDIT: I just want to add that I'm surprised by all the new things BIS tries. Arma already supports TripleHead2Go and TrackIR, which as far as I know, my other games do not.
