Will there be a version of the HAR3 SAR bird in low vis colour scheme? Obviously a yellow chopper shouts "SHOOT ME DOWN" to the enemy..............

The SAR ones are only used domestically in the UK, normally to rescue stranded civilians. They're not for CSAR or anything where they'll be shot at; hence why they're yellow.

I think the RAF uses Merlin HC.3As for CSAR.

Rock, do the RN still operate their Sea King HAR.5 rescue helicopters?

Da12 is right the HAR3 is used only within the UK national boundaries. ***They are purely for use in civil areas. ***They are originally intended as a means of rescue for British military aircrew operating around the UK but they justify their expenditure by supporting the UK Coastguard and RNLI services.

The UK doesn’t have a regular CSAR force. ***The term used these days is JPR (Join Personnel Recovery). ***The RAF has been fighting for a proper CSAR unit since ’89. ***They started fielding specially trained teams in 1990. ***And they began operations in the run up to the first Gulf war using Puma HC2 and Chinooks, supported by a SAR-G (search and Rescue-Ground) Team, now called a Ground Extraction Force (GEF) Drawn from the RAF Regiment.

The modern teams now operating in Iraq and Afghanistan are drawn from all the services and use appropriately trained crews serving in the area. Helicopters are drawn on detachment basis from key squadrons in theatre and can include Seakings, Pumas, Chinooks and Merlins. Although there were rumours that the HC3A Merlin would be tasked for dedicated Special Operations and CSAR roles in Afghanistan when they finally deploy in 2009. One thing to remember is that unlike other nations the UK’s JPR teams aren’t solely tasked to CSAR they perform regular duties on top of the JPR tasking.

As far as I am aware there are no HAR.5s flying anymore. ***All the airframes were retired and replaced by HU.5 and converted HAS6 in 2003. ***I could be wrong though; RN kit isn’t really my forte. ***I don’t have many contacts in the FAA.

    I probably meant HU.5 rather than HAR.5.

Seems I was reading something along similar lines to you regarding Merlin UKSF and CSAR roles. However, there have been rumours to that effect ever since the formation of SFSG; saying that the Rockapes in the unit are tasked with CSAR and FAC.

Well i think the HU5 are being stood down in 2010 and being replaced with civilian contractors and possibly AW149s!

That would make sense since 33 Squadron's E flight (?) has been tasked with “High Value Asset Recovery" since the late 99(again another vague date), which is to all intents and purposes CSAR until the recent JPR recovery. All the GEF lads in that flight are drawn from 2 & 3 Squadron RAF Regiment. And most tend to be drawn from the specialised skill sets.
