Thread: Back to the roots?

  1. #1
The intention of this post is to found out if the new ArmA gameplay style is what the community prefer or the "old" OFP one. Both styles are totally different. Fast/Direct vs more slowly/more or less realistic.

From my point of view the community has totally changed caused by this new game style. ArmA seems to be primary a coop game but it is not made for human vs humans (league games).

    What is your opinion?

I don't see any big difference between the ArmA/OFP gamestyle.

In my opinion OFP had a stupid and annoying movement system, ArmA is better but still too fast.

    Lets see..

We can now walk without having the whole view shaking around.
We can lean and perform combat rolls.
We can walk in a crouched position.
We can run holding an RPG or rocket launcher.
We can adjust the floating zone.
    Walking is faster.

I dont see a big diference other than the improvements... i know some of these dont mean alot in adversarial mode but they dont get in the way.

I think the view/camera made a bigger diference than the animation/movement, it feels a bit zoomed in.
Another diference in the speed of gameplay is that the sights no longer switch on and off in a fraction of a second, well thats realism +1 and i like it.

I've read that BIS were going to implement reloading on the move, we will see how that works, i have never seen anyone reload a M240 while jogging around irl.

But back to the roots? Well that sounds like downgrading the game so, nope.

    edit:
I'd like to have a fast weapon switch feature, so i dont get killed while my frozen avatar slowly shoulders his rocket launcher and slowly pulls his hand gun out.
A key bind that would allow me to just drop the empty weapon so i could switch to the handgun or rifle faster would be welcome.

I mostly just see improvements in ArmA's style. For instance you can now walk and shoot more easily in close combat and still hit your targets. As well as what Heatseeker said.

I would like it improved further. I definitely don't want it to be like OFP.

I picked 'arma style' but it could be improved.

The controlling of the character doesn't have as immediate feeling as in OFP, that can be considered as a drawback, and so I do. It is probably done to add 'realistic reaction time' or 'inertia' or something like that. For me it makes me feel like I am not one with the in-game character, which reduces feeling of realism. On the other hand, there must be some delay in your movement so the OFP-style is maybe too immediate. It is about when I press a key to move the character, I already made the decision that now I will move/stop/whatever, and the in-game character should respond fast, just as I can do in real life. This could need some tweaking in ArmA.

I have found using a pistol in ArmA much more effective than in OFP. I haven't looked exactly what is the reason for this change in the feeling, but I definitely can hit targets much better with a pistol in ArmA than in OFP.

In OFP using a pistol against an AI group could mean almost certain death even when in tight urban environment. But in ArmA I can take such a group down in an urban environment easier. And I think it is more realistic, I expect to be able to hit the enemy with a pistol when an enemy is standing right next to me in real life too. I don't mean taking on the whole group at the same time, but picking the enemies one/two at a time with a pistol by using buildings/walls as cover and staying most of the time hidden. In real life I bet the enemies would be better to counter-combat this tactic, so... ArmA could need some improvements to this too.

Thats what i thought, but as ArmA has crouchwalk and leaning i just voted for ArmA style..

EDIT: Oh and walking with the iron sights doesnt shake your head up and down anymore, that was annoying and ridiculous.

Yeah, but those are "just" improvements. Other than that they feel pretty much the same to me.

Both and more. The best game is where is infinite amount of customizable options to each gamelay. Game should allow to it to be played like u wanna not like the devs want.

OFP multiplayer since june 2001. gamename MRJ-GLO
