Thread: My favorite OFP "quirk" is back!

For the old OFPers this should bring back lots of fond memories of spoiled ambushes and lost firefights.

I was watching Video Test 1.wmv at time index 16:20 and the player lays on a piece of destroyed building, aiming "over the ridge" while prone and fires.

The sights show a clear path beyond the terrain under him, the tip of the barrel is most definitely in "clear air" and...

The bullets impact just below the character's chest! Again BIS? Is it that hard to have your player's bullets originate from the end of the barrel and not chest, head, whatever?

Just like OFP just because you have the enemy in your sights and there's nothing between your barrel end and the enemy.. there's no guarentee that your bullets will travel farther than 6" if you're prone near a ridge.

Actually, they do (originate from the barrel), and did in OFP. Why else would we have the muzzle start and end positions in the gun models? You can tell by the tracers too, or by sticking your gun around a corner and firing when the rest of your body is clearly behind the wall. The problem here is caused by the geometry LOD of the building. It's not easy to get the geometry/fire geo LOD to match perfectly with what you see visually, and I'm sure the destruction animations don't help very much either. But anyway it hardley ever causes any drastic problems, and in OFP you sometimes learned to put a little bit of distance between your gun barrel and any objects right in front of you. Same thing for the terrain too, though not as drastic and only really problematic on ridges.

So you're saying that when it looks like the rifle is clearing an obstacle, in the "real game behind the scenes" actually it is not. I know I shouldn't have mentioned that it was building debris, someone was going to say "that's the way it is because it was a dynamic object." Because it has the exact same problem with both the complex dynamic object and regular unchangeable terra firma.

"Only on ridges" ><;;;; Only on ridges? 99% of my shooting is from ridges!

I've found the best way to fix this problem is to keep an eye out for where the barrel of my gun is. Often, while my scope or ironsight is well above the ground and easily able to see the target, the barrel is actually being blocked. This, of course, caused the bullets to hit the obstructing object, not my intended target. However, it is also this way in reality, so I don't really get to mad at the game when this happens, more at myself.

On the other hand, there are MANY more acceptable ways to hold a gun and still hit your target in reality. I've seen some people shoot prone with M4s via many interesting methods - hand on top of the gun and in front of the scope, hand on top of the gun and behind the scope, hand on the short-bar in the CQB models, etc. Of course, this kind of dream for a video game is pretty much nothing but a wet dream, or at least at this in this era of game development.

Ya, just like when you were aiming at the m113 with LAW/RPG on that mission you made on nogova and ended shooting the ridge and killed most of your sqaud and me.

It is not a bug, the sights on a weapon are obviously above the barrel.

It's exact opposite of this situation. The bullets "originate" from the end of the barrel, but in most of the present games you are shooting from your eyes. That's the reason why you sometimes hits the wall or are shooting to the ground. Your weapon is at different place, than the point wich you are seeing from. If you wanna be sure you'll be not hiting obstacle, use the sights... and even then you should keep in mind (especially with the optics) that end of the barrel is few centmetres under the center of the screen.

If someone reports an issue/complains about the Alpha etc, replying in the thread "dude it's an alpha" doesn't really help anyone! Point them to the Arma3 Alpha feedback tracker instead please!

Please do not PM or Email me directly about your CD Key issues, follow the guidance in this thread instead.
