Thread: Observer mode and replays

  1. #1
as we haven't heard concrete much information about MP so
far, i like to state only as my opinion that oberserver mode
and replay ability is nowadays essential for any potential
    successful MP game !

as this is already present in VBS i hope BIS will port em over too.

i want to mainly express my opinion that those are very very
    important for various reasons !
(community, competition, cheat protection, more tactical /
    professional gaming approch, etc)

    best regards

from the offical VBS1 improvements pdf file a short summary for those who dont know whats it about.

also a 2D map view. The Observer interface also displays a
variety of statistics (for both individual participants and for
    entire sides).

given scenario and saves this data to disk. The module can
then playback a recorded scenario in high detail, showing full
unit animation, units mounting and dismounting vehicles and
hit/kill events. The playback system also displays a wide
range of statistics (measures of effectiveness).

These features would be great but I doubt that BIS considers that it's worth it as most players wouldn't really use them.

VBS1/2 is still a product they wanna sell so adding all the 'useless' features from it makes VBS1 useless.
    I hate it

not really, since vbs isnt a game as arma will be. Its meant to two different groups.

I cant see why they wouldnt want to put in replay and observer mode into arma. Its great in other games.

The ability to save replays would be incredibly handy for co-op squads. It'd make certain techniques a lot easier to teach, as rather than having to explain it with screenshots and test or by demonstrating it to every batch of new members, you could do it once, save the replay and hey presto, an instant 'how-to' guide.

Also, I want proof when I score a first-round kill at silly ranges

I remember watching "replays" from some coop competition in Ghost Recon, it was really nice to see the different approaches.
Even when completing by some miracle a difficult mission in single player, i sometime enjoyed to watch again from different point of view.

Replay would be an interesting features in ArmA/Game2 for a vast amount of reasons, certainly not useless even when play testing a mission you made yourself.

I would greatly appreciate detailes After Action Reports, with different statistics like who shot how many bullets, with what efficiency, step by step action replay, real time on map movement drawing etc..

If these are included in VBS and may not be in ArmA, the only reason I see is money. The engines being "almost" identical, the only thing that gives VBS1/2 a reason to exist is being more professionel oriented, which explains why they are more expensive than the "gamer version"...

This would be a pretty cool feature to have, but likely will not be in ArmA in the same form it is in VBS. There will perhaps be a replay, and an Observer mode... but likely not as complex as the VBS version.

Its really something I cant see getting a ton of use. I mean clans and groups of coop players can have some fun with it, and it would make lan games intresting... but your average player would likely never touch it.

    I agree.

A "Observer module" is a must have. Many other games use a function like this, and this function is very usefull.

I would love to have an 'observer' mode in this game. Sometimes, I can't be bothered playing, so I like to watch instead. It's like watching a war movie!!!
ArmA has really surpassed my expectations...

I also play World War 2 Online and Hidden & Dangerous 2

Look out for JazzGuru in other games

There is "Commander" post for MP mentioned in the previews, so we'll probably get something that may be similar to Observer module. The simple spectator-ish view is possible even with nowadays OFp.
