Thread: I think mommy triggered fade....

There is a new tool out to aid parents in keeping their innocent children away from evil things on their pc.

Parent file scan lists all media files and P2P programs that are present on a PC. Furthermore, they can all be removed by a click on the button! this will ensure your pc is free of illegal media, heck, in the FAQ I read it'l even sniff out audio files that have a different extension!

Q: How do I recover deleted files?
A: You can’t. Once files are deleted, they cannot be recreated.

    in combination with:

Q: Is it possible to hide files from the program, by changing their name or extension?
A: No. The program uses advanced binary recognition, locating all known multimedia file types and P2P

so audio in a pbo file gets detected... imagine what happens next...

Seriously, what's the next step? the average kid under this regime can only use his pc as an expensive typewriter... oh, untill there comes software out that removes all documents / text files/powerpoint presentations, incase there is confidential info in there that could be abused by hackers....

Unless the software has an integrated pbo extractor, which is extremely unlikely, it won't find audio in your pbo files.

It uses binary identification... or something like that...

I wasn't really worried about OFP, it was more ment to mock the software... I mean seriously, meassures that delete all media?

However, there are games that have music in a zip file wich they renamed to .pak or something (Farcry?) , I think those things WILL get sniffed out....

Binary identification / pattern matching doesn't do you anything good if the data is compressed, encrypted or in any other way obfuscated.

If one is using P2P one should also encrypt like there was no tomorrow. Unfortunately I failed to realize that.

Does'nt seem to be anything that can't be defeated with removable media and file compression.

It either lags like a bitch or doesn't work at all.
    Wellcome to the morronland.

Locating viruses is one thing, because viruses are small and their signatures are easy to compare, but how exactly the program is going to check if a file is copyrighted, or is it a backup of Your beloved "Kelly family".

I doubt that the program will contain info about all p2p files and compare them. Unless it's going to download P2P files one after another and compare them to what's on disc.

And I really wonder how does the algorythm work. If it was that good it'd propably end up in military or goverment agencies. I'm sure they'd find a better use for it.

You don't need a PBO decryptor to find something in PBO. The waves and MP3s are usually uncompressed and only stored inside.
And if it works...? Bah, someone will make a crack in within a week.

Something tells me that the software just looks up initial MP3 headers that would not be placed in the beginning of a PBO file IIRC.

Wonder how many parents are going to keep this installed after this breaks Lil Johnny's games (for which they bought the damn machine in the first place) not to mention if it breaks anything that parents use..

Not to speak of having youre own little private FTP ,or sharing it with others...

Or ,HUM ,what about writing audio on a CD? (oh shoot we forgot about that ,well that was a longshot)

has anyone actually tired the software yet?

i have its gonna be quite handy for those call outs to pcs which are fubar, it doesnt just search and delete, it lists everything it finds then its up to you if you want to delete it or not, you can specificaly search for either music or p2p programs or video files.

its actually a good way of making sure pornography isnt hidden on a drive somewhere and that evil p2p programes arent present.

    i quite like it.

not ran it on my machine with ofp on so i dont know if itll list the contents of a pbo, i highly doubt it though
