Thread: Integrated RT MP Voice-over-IP

  1. #1
Since JIP and MP code is going to be revised in general, and since there's a tool for OFP to make lip-synching of soundfiles already available, I was wondering if it were possible for ArAs to already come with integrated voice-over-ip communication, and when you speak, that the ingame figure moves its lips as well accordingly- this was already implemented in Half-Life: Counterstrike, and it would help a great deal the movie-making of ArAs, especially working in MP, and would greatly add to realism... could this be implemented for ArAs already? Would mean alot...

It already exists in OFP, but was disabled for some reason I don't know, but I remember it used to work back in the 1.46 days...

So I don't see why it shouldn't be possible to implement full-featuredly.

Been with OFP since 1.2, and it's still getting better and better...

the reason why it was disabled was the change to sockets instead of directplay for multiplayer.

But it is possible to get it working with sockets of course (im sure they will use that for this code as well).

I think he means In-game VoIP where you can speak with the lip sync.

No the wav-to-lip where pong2cs is referring too, if I understand correct.

Now this is something I've been interested in for years now.

Just whisper in your mic when you are playing co-op, and the other player then would be able to hear you and see your lips move just like you said it for real...

Yeah, that's exactly what I mean, SgtH3nry3! The amazing thing is, that it existed for the Half-Life mod Counterstrike... strangely, haven't seen any other mod or game feature that ability ever since... in HL CS others can talk with their microphones using the ingame voice chat system, and the ingame character's lips moved when they talked... that would be awesome in ArAs... much easier to make even more realistic movies via MP than all the scripted stuff...

Why did they change at all?

DirectPlay was a microsoft experiment that never really took off.
It had problems with performance mostly.

Standard socket network communication is alot easier to get through all the various kinds of firewalls that exist today.

When you use the directplay voice feature in OFP in the direct speaking channel the speech is heard coming from your character by other players and your lips do move (though I think the lips move just randomly). The sound is played too silent though (you must be quite close to even hear it) and it doesnt work with sockets so hopefully A®A(s) will fix that.

Yea.. i twas really coo... cause only nearby players could hear you talk...

Would bee cool if it would work just like any other voice app like teamspeak.. then u could see the lips move and KNOW what person was speaking.

That's what I'm talking about too, it was there, it worked, it had area effect and all.
