What Is the W-Buffer?

What does the w-buffer do? What is auto-dropdown?

Im not completely aware of what W-buffer is, but heres is description from raid on tweaker:
"Enables support for uniformly spaced depth buffer (W buffer). Enable for better depth accuracy in some games (such as UT)."

Auto-drop down should be that how computer calculates fights at the distance.
Like instead of running each units acts separately, it will save up CPU processing by cutting it down to simplier calculations as range increases.
