Thread: Dumb luck or not

Just finished playing the 'as an eagle' mission from the fantastic FDF mod. ( Top work guys ).

Anyway, what a chore I had. Every approach I tried on the rebel base resulted in a masacre. I used every strategy I could think of, machine gunner on the flanks with my team coming in at 90 or 180 degress. AT team seperate to take out the armour. Different patterns of fire, grenade volly. Everything resulted in my team being butchered.

Finally in a fresh attempt I got slightly lost and stumbled over a crest in wedge formation to find the camp about 50m right in front of me. I dropped to the ground and gave a panicked 'open fire'.

After a few minutes the last russian got off one lucky shot that caused my only casualty.

So, boy, did all my plans look stupid.

Anyway I've read enough stories of great blunders and undeserved victories in real life to know that sometimes 'thems the breaks'! Just wondered if any of you guys also felt that sometimes the harder you try in OFP the worse it gets or if you'd also had the day saved by sheer dumb luck?

Definatly. With many computer games in fact i find that i just cant complete a particular mission/level or whatever no matter how hard i try but after going away and then coming back later with a different attitude i stroll through it. With OFP there is also an added element of 'luck' or at least a lack of predictability to battles that makes them quite interesting

Yup, all the time. OFP's AI may not be perfect, but it is without a doubt some of the least predictable AI ever made. It almost never does the same thing twice.

I had alot of luck in Tank Combat. Multiplayer: I was in a T72 that was hit at point-blank range by a M1A1. I bailed out and the T72 exploded, I was right next to it, and I didn't die, even though the T72 was full of fuel and ammo. And my luck didnt run out. I was badly injured and crawled to a dead LAW soldier and picked up the LAW. I fired the three shots, after firing my RPG's two shots. The Abrams still couldnt find me. I saw two AI soldiers, one a Sniper, the other a LAW Soldier . Killed them, took the law, and finished off the abrams.

    Thats good luck to me.
