vade_101 0 Posted April 30, 2003 </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Dozens of British and American oil workers are being held hostage on four rigs off Nigeria's coast by local colleagues in a bizarre drama which has been kept secret for 12 days, it emerged yesterday. Several captives have allegedly been put in containers and dangled by cranes over the sea and others threatened with death in an apparent attempt by striking Nigerian workers to intimidate managers. At least 35 Britons and 21 Americans are among the 97 expatriates trapped since a labour dispute flared into insurrection on April 19. <span id='postcolor'> Sounds like a bad situation, seeing as Nigeria is a member of the commonwealth, and the Royal Marines do have a specialist unit for operating on oil rigs in the Commachio Group (i belive SEAL Team 6 also has this sort of capability) if it does come to a storming i hope the let the professionals sort it.... VXR 9 Posted April 30, 2003 reminds me of a mission in Rainbow 6, you had to takeback a oil rig from terrorists. but now its not a game
CoolCarlos2002 2 Posted April 30, 2003 NAVY Seal Team 6 can handle the job, any links relating to this?

IsthatyouJohnWayne 0 Posted April 30, 2003 Hopefully it wont come to armed conflict (i doubt it will in fact). The nigerian oil workers would not be able to put up much of a fight anyway if western special forces were sent in. However i think the SBS would be the group to do it (if theyre not all still in Iraq). In fact i wouldnt be surprised if theres an SBS team in west africa on standby right now. Theyve been training for oil rig seizures for 25+ years.
FSPilot 0 Posted April 30, 2003 Reminds me of the counter strike map. Yeah this is a pretty bad situation. hopefully they'll get talked out of it. It's not like they can make a getaway from an oil rig.
FallenPaladin 0 Posted April 30, 2003 Yes, they should solve this problem peacefully. Hope it`ll end with all surviving this mess.
Major Gripe 0 Posted April 30, 2003 i doubt that the nigerian government would let western special forces in to do the job as the nigerian army/navy would lose face. One of the British hostages said that he feared the nigerians would try to storm the rig with gunfire support from their 2 ex American WW2 (yes world war 2! navy destroyers. Guess how many would get out alive then
edc 0 Posted April 30, 2003 Destroyers firing on a oil rig while people are rescuing hostages?! What in the h*ll are they thinking? Hopefully this'll turn out OK.
Col. The navy is in the area. Our men will move to take control of the rigs," Captain Hungiapuko said. Asked what the navy would do if it encountered resistance, Captain Hungiapuko replied: "What action would you expect military men to take?" <span id='postcolor'> Those fears of the Nigerian military storming the oil rigs with fire support from two destroyers might not be too far fetched. Milkman 1 Posted May 1, 2003 Uhhh are'nt oil rigs explosive? I dont think firing 5inch naval guns at them is going to help out.
FSPilot 0 Posted May 1, 2003 I hope they already know that, and probably do as they're the 6th largest oil producer in the world. Anyway, I doubt they'll be barraging the oil facility.

Milkman 1 Posted May 1, 2003 Because we westerners sadley don't give a crap about tragic, horrible events unless they involve us. The odd thing about that is that there are americans on those oil rigs.
FSPilot 0 Posted May 1, 2003 I heard about it on Fox news, but I must admit it isn't getting a lot of press.

Jinef 2 Posted May 3, 2003 I don't bother with the news much, i got a friend who briefs me on what is happening in the world every morning. It's useful to have it all summarised, like the radio without the annoying adverts, people, music etc.
FSPilot 0 Posted May 3, 2003 This friend doesn't tell you to do things, right? To hurt people? j/k, what does he say about this?
Jinef 2 Posted May 3, 2003 Uhh, something along the lines of, "Go on you Nigerians! Stick up to those corporate wankers!" But we just ignore him because we like big houses and fast cars etc.
