Thread: Required addons,damn those addons

1. #1

Thumbs down

At the most sites where I download missions. When you download a mission you open the readme, needed addons...!!!!
You get a list full of it!
I'm getting pretty angry about this!
once I get a mission that needed a complete set like:
STT desert malden,STT destert units,STT armor.

Why don't they make a tab called "Addonsless and Addonreqmissions?"
Really simple.

The only site where you can download without worring about addons is www.flashpoint-arena.dk there the mission has no addons.

I know people spend days for making some addons but you can include it ALL in a single pack so that you don't need to look for all addons.

Ah,that's it.Hope you can read my "English".

I agree that download sites should make a separation between no-addon missions and addon-needed missions.

And also to make a notice if the mission is compatible with 1.46 or if it is Resistance only.

It will certainly help a lot people that dont have the time to check and search the net to find the missing addons from missions they downloaded (and that are not included in the zip for most of the addon-needed missions out there).

For me all available OFP addon's are like spices to a nice meal and I'm very greatfull to all addon makers for sharing their hard work.

That being said we all know what you mean and thats why I hoped for some "Unified Addon Packs" (see this old thread) to evolve to make life easier for both mission makers and thoose who plays them.

The closest thing to this I've seen so far is SEB's Nam Pack 2.0 and that package is great...

The OFP Community has developed a map-naming system to simplify this, mainly for multiplayer but if adopted by the whole community (currently about half) then this problem will be solved.

Read the thread for full details but basically - map type first, with @ if addons are needed, then MAX players, map name and version number if required.

Exclamation

To fix this "annoyance", those who make these missons should include the required add-ons .zip file in the mission pack. (with the consent of the add-on's author of course)

The problem with that would be that a lot of addon makers wouldn't want their addons to be distributed w/ missions, and also 56kers would wine about having to d/l larger files, which honestly I can't blame them, though the day of the 56k is in my opinion long gone.

Feel sorry for the 56kers out there.

Just go and get cable/DSL!!

Are you sure?

I think this belongs into "USER MISSIONS" ***

btw. STT Desert Malden, STT Desert Soldiers and STT Desert Tanks
are still good addons to have and it was notified in the readme.txt of the mission.
So what is he really complaining about *** ***that he needs to read it?
I always read them to make sure, if they putted a readme into it *** ***
When he still thinks it`s a problem(for him) then he must
complain on the sites where he gets them from.
Or to the people who made them in their own sparetime(for peoples gaming pleasure)

Missions makers can't win - if they use addons, people complain, and if they don't, people say "why aren't all these great addons coming out getting used in missions".
I like to see good use of addons in missions, with a couple of conditions. The addons required must be clearly listed in the readme for the mission, along with download links if at all possible.
Also, yes, mission hosting sites should list as much info about missions as possible - addons required, version required, island, number players, type (co-op, CTF etc.), etc etc. The mission naming protocol addresses a lot of these issues.
