First of all, this topic is not for discussing crap about the war on Iraq or anything that comes close. If you want to talk about Iraq, post it in the Iraq topic. Thank you.

Second, the example that i'm using is just an example, don't take it too serious. I just used it because it's the only example i can think of right now.

Ok, here we go, imagine this...
I am an american soldier, my president wants to invade Iraq, but i think this idea is extremly stupid and i do not support it at all. I believe this idea is one of the dumbest things ever.
Basically i hate it more than anything else, so i'm not prepared to go fighting in Iraq.
After a while i recieve a message that i will be sent to Iraq to fight there. I say that i will not go, no matter what.
What would the army or anything else do to me?
I guess executing because you deserted is a bit outdated, a trial maybe?

What happens when you are not prepared to fight? Not because you are a coward but because you don't agree with what the army does...

That's my question, now, i'll say this again to avoid people bashing me.
THE IRAQ THING WAS JUST AN EXAMPLE, DONT TAKE IT TOO SERIOUS, ITS THE BEST EXAMPLE I COULD THINK OF AT THE MOMENT. SO DONT START CALLING ME A US HATER OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT...
Thank you.

I don't know the details but I'm certain they wouldn't execute you...for christ sakes John Walker only got 20 years! You'd spend some time behind bars though.

You would be court martialed for desertion and disobeying orders. In theory you could get executed, but most likely you would get long jail time at Leavenworth.

Well, first let me go off topic a little bit here and explain the chain of command.

In the United States the President is our Commander in Chief. ***So when he ordered us to go into Afghanistan, he really ordered the top people in the military to make it happen. ***He didn't order Petty Officer Othin specifically to go pick up a gun and make for Afghanistan

So when the command would come to my level, I would be given both verbal and written orders (literally paperwork telling me where I'm going, how I'm getting there, and when). ***Since we're not in a warzone, they cannot execute me for not going, they can however prosecute me under the UCMJ for disobeying a direct order Article 92. You're going to be going to spend some time at Leavenworth.

If however I showed up in Afghanistan and was ordered to target a known civilian structure (hospital, school, etc) I could refuse under the grounds that this is an unlawful order. ***Most likely I'm going to spend time in the brig until it can be proved that I was correct where the person who ordered me was wrong, but that's worth it.

The thing it comes down to is trust. ***The people above me didn't get there by being evil, cowardly, or stupid. ***I know that they're not putting me in any more danger then the mission requires, or putting me in a position to purposely harm civilians or noncombatants.

You get a free trip to sunny Fort Leavenworth Kansas! Yes, the heartland of the U.S. Enjoy historical Fort Leavenworth from behind bars and make your own history in the brand new United States Disciplinary Barracks. Get buzzed by airplanes (me ) taking off from the nearby and nearly abandoned Sherman AAF.

Considering escape? Well, if the coyotes don't get you the MPs will!

Basically...

Welcome to Military Butt Slammin' Prison...

You ain't in the military to pick and choose where you want to go, "concientious" or not.

They tell you and you go.
To doubt everything or to believe everything are two equally convenient solutions; both dispense with the necessity of reflection.

You'd get repremanded. (I.E. Article 15). ***Reduction in rank, trial and a lot of time behind bars. ***Possible eventually dishonorable discharge. ***Or the crap beat out of you.

When you are given and order and you are a soldier, you follow the order to the detail. ***Sometimes that goes agaisnt your feelings, opinons, and morals, but an order is an order!
