Hi, You had time for over 6 month to develop at least an early alpha or beta state version of the upcoming linux dedicated server.

We'd like to know what advantages you have been accomplished and which problems may exist which delay your development process.

As we had asked you already in november2001 (btw: you did not even answer us -> BAD ATTITUDE!) we wanna know what exact state the linux-project is!

Wed like to assist you in developing or beta-testing your linux version but as long there is no sign we will ban your products complete from our servers. As our facilities wont be the only one who ban non-linux servers.

So if you want to make sure your products will have success in the future - dont ignore the admins - dont ignore the player - dont ignore the people!

Regards

Simon Lange

I don't think anybody said that a Linux server was actually under development. The level of demand for one, and the feasibility of creating one were being investigated, but that's it as far as I know.

And I don't think the threat of banning a product is going to do you much good. CM/BIS will not feel the economic impact, and the people who love the game will simply move on to other servers and admins.

Answering your questions:

-Linux Dedicated Server NEVER AND NOT IN THIS GAME.

As BIS has explained many times before they chose to use DirectPlay to handle the MP games. As you may or you may not know DirectPlay is a M$ DirectX ASPI and will NEVER work under Linux. Consequently adding dedicated Linux servers would require writing a whole new net code, which I am afraid is not very feasible.

As for BIS ignoring the people as you said, I totally disagree. Nowadays it is impossible to find a game with a bigger community support than OFP. We got to beta test patches, many improvements have been added listening to our feedback, and last but not least our post get answered by the developers themselves...

Name a game with that kind of support to his community, just one (that has sold as many copies as OFP that is...)

There never was a Linux server in development to my knowledge. Everything I saw on the forums said that it was a slight possiblity in the future, but not a priority or something that we were promised...I too would like to see a Linux Dedicated server available, however...I wouldnt hold your breath...so either fire up winsk or run it on a linux box with emulation.

Without Linux Dedicated Server the online community at least ín Germany will die very soon.

We are a little Clan trying to find a Hostservice for the Game. It is impossible to get a payable Provider for that game. If we could get a Linux Version it would be no problem because there are many Provider here that supports all the games like HL , UT, q3 and more, because they have a LINUX Server version.

As most of the Clans startet when the game was released we are thinking to change to Games like RtCW or MoHaa cause we are able to Rent a server.

I´m still hoping to get a Linux Version which would mean a server for my Clan...

bye for now and happy x-mas

That's why there are thousands of UnrealTournament servers and only a handfull of good OFP servers (which I am glad people keep up). Why don't CM/BIS run a dedicated server of their own??!?!

maybe not ignoring the people but the market ...
what a shame .. for me it will be single player as in a remote location like australia , with a provider that has issues when it comes to ping (dont ask) a linux port which my provider would happyly run as a server is my only hope.
as good as the single player campaigns are , i feel a bit let down as multiplayer/online gaming is a vital part of a first person shooter (though i acknowledge that OFP is not just that). i ve seen people complain alot in other threads , be it about oxygene not beeing released to the wide public , or the community which is falling apart. no wonder after half a year and only 250 servers online. noone likes to hear it i guesss but take halflife. a game that is ages old and still the 'community' puts out mods without end and by that infact keeping the original halflife in the market. who would buy that game if it wasnt for the cd key , i mean today... seems BIS is missing a big opportunity here. ***
also it seems i m doomed to stand beside and watch .. with a ping of at least 800 to every other server ..

or is there a linux port yet ? i ve searched the forums but couldnt find anything.
have a look at the last posts concerning a linux port all are in december.
seems people cant be bothered to wait and moved on to other online games .. a pitty

You COULD run OFP on linux with WINE, but why bother at that point? You would be effectively running windows inside linux, so performance would take a massive hit.

Like they said earlier though, there will be no such thing as a "port" becasue the MP code is based on directplay, a microsoft standard. there is no equivelant in Linux, so no port CAN be made.
On the brighter side though, there has been word of new netcode to be released in june, so maybe it will be based on something more flexible.

Suma said they are working on a netcode not using DirectPlay tho, but it will take (a long) time. If they finish it, it will most likely be easy to convert to *nix versions.
