Artillery computer: What are the target limitations?

This is Operation Arrowhead

I place myself and some men on the map.

One of my men is the M119 artillery piece.

On patrol I can order him to shoot almost anywhere on the map.

I note I can swap positions with that man and I do so. I am now operating the M119.

To fire it I use the artillery computer.

It seems that I can fire at some locations on the map but not others.

1. What are the criteria for the limitations of the gunner?

2. When i am the patrol commander there are (nearly) no limitations but when I am the gunner there are limitations. Why is that?

Make sure you're selecting the range properly.

When you activate the fire computer you should see two blue circles which indicate where you can shoot.
They will change as you alter the firing range (short, medium, far)
The area between you and the first circle indicates that the area is too close to get a proper elevation on the gun.
The area between the two circles are the effective range of the gun.
