Thread: Way to force older beta install?

I agree, steam users don't have cd's, and can't install the gold version and then only apply the patches they want...

My guess is the steam users will be unable to play on our server until BI gets around to releasing a 1.62 linux dedicated server... my hope is the dev's can suggest a way around this.

It could be possible to create a differential patch from an earlier install and a current steam install. This patch would likely be at least several hundred MB in size, less than redownloading the game but more than your average patch. You'd basically need a 1.60 install and a 1.62 install, then create a differential patch between them with something like WinMerge. I've no idea on what BiS policy would be on distributing such a file, as you would essentially be sharing parts of both versions - I suggest that you check with them first.

    Kindling,

How on earth am I supposed to find a steam 1.60 install when steam automatically upgrades ArmA CD installs won't work because the folder structure is different....

    The only options are:

    1. the ability to run an old beta patch

    2. BIS to give instructions for how to downgrade/revert steam back to 1.60

    3. BIS to publish a 1.62 copy of the Linux dedicated server...

My guess (and reason for my post) is because the beta option is the most likely to work.

Maybe you can find somebody who didn't update? I don't think the Linux dedicated server will take that long, to be honest - perhaps a few weeks to a few months? Rough guess. I doubt number 2 would happen, though everything is possible.

Number 1 is probably not, though - from what I know, the updates are patches and are cumulative - you couldn't use an old patch to update a new install.

I sure hope you're kidding... it's completely unreasonable they didn't release dedicated server bins at the same time as the patch, weeks or months later... lots of linux admins are going to move on to something else.

Calm down all - you rather have BIS work on some "fix" to merge and what not or do you want them to work on releasing the new Linux binary? I do understand and share the frustration but the new patch has only been out for a day and they did say they run into unexpected problems with *x version.

It's unfortunate that Steam for once pushed the new version this quick.

Come to think of it, I cannot recall any other game (our community been running) releasing linux server binaries at same time as latest patch. It was always a few days or even up to a week in between.

No I'd rather they release dedicated server updates at the exact same instance as client updates.... but if they don't they need to offer a solution to those users who are forced to upgrade (via steam) to continue to play on the old version until such time as they can manage to get the dedicated server for linux pushed out.

The fact that they knew there was a problem, and didn't properly warn us ahead of time makes it even that much more of an issue in my book.
