Thread: What games got you into tactical gaming?

  1. #21
I always liked any game in which I could shoot, so many I cant even remember but I waisted dozens of keyboards due to me destroying all buttons which were used to fire (mainly spacebar)

But Ghost Recon (the original one, not the suki GRAW series) got me into tactics definatly.

oohhh, Airborne Ranger! Clunkiest movement controls of any C64 game

Despite having played all the old stuff too, the penny really dropped when Doom arrived.
Having become a total sucker für 3d games then, and reading somewhere that Doom was used by US Marines for training (oh yes) i went to playing mostly "open sky" maps in doom..

.... until some (longer) time later browsing through a PC magazine i saw this 1st preview screen of something never seen before:

    There it happened.

REALISM! No, fuck that, FIRE THE LASER!

I played Delta Force for a few weeks and it opened my eyes to large environments, when suddenly a friend came over with a copy of OFP 1.00, and I've never looked back. So I don't have a long history is tactical shooters, but OFP made all other shooters obsolete for me, and the Arma series still does.

Tactical? Well that would be C&C then FPS tactical? OFP and Rainbow six (what a coincidence, currently I´m reading the book)

It was a games review late night station where I saw Ghost Recon being demonstrated and didn't get a high review, but something about it really got me interested with the look of it. So I bought it a week later back in late 2001, that was it for me. Then came Raven Shield, then Swat ... then nothing until I saw Arma1 (OP Flashpoint seemed to be completely missed for me at the time unsure as to why). Now Arma2/OA and then A3.

Before Ghost Recon I hadn't played any games since my Amiga back in 1992 and before, nothing interested me graphically all the way through the 90's one bit.

^The first PC game I remember playing is Joint Ops. Anyway, many moons later, I went to the local hardware 'n' software store to pick up a copy of MW2. They were all out. What they weren't all out of, though, was something I had been keeping a close eye on, but never really thought about it much before. Still, I decided to pick that jewel up, and this was it:

Counter-Strike was the gateway for me.
