Fix confirmation / testing required: Helicopters don't detect infantrymen well enough

Tell us in here, if and when the chopper detects the infantry (look at the chat).

60m-80m where the AI pilot/gunner detects the single AI soldier on Utes airport/tarmac.

It would be imho better if AI pilot/gunner can detect infantry units much earlier without knowing the side/factions instantly and have to verify it via sight/zoom aka timed delay. AI pilot/gunner should aswell loose single infantry tracking faster so they keep more focused on attacking vehicles/objects/static gun's + weapon.

Overall AI pilots/gunners should fire their weapons from distance a lot more instead of making those silly and risky overfly maneuvers.

In each of the three runs the chopper only seemed to notice the threat after it had flown over. Doing the other test in a minute...

In the other mission, the helo went combat mode about 60m before the enemy and recognized a BLUFOR unit at about 80m past the enemy. Circled round and went for the kill. Three runs of this one with the same results.

Using beta 1.60.88027. All enemy detections occur after heli has flown over soldier.

This time it seems to vary more, but I would say that the BLUFOR guy is spotted when the chopper is even further past than previously.

Shall I use 88027 or 88147?

Does this fix effect the heli detection issue?

[88119] Improved: AI spotting reducing in high speed moving vehicles more accurate now (movement direction is considered).

It would also good to get comments on what you see as reasonable behavior/capabilities for the chopper crew to detect infantry on the ground.

Had some time to think about this..

I would say that it is harder for a pilot/gunner/crew to spot a lone infantryman than it would be for a gunman to spot a helicopter (he will be able to hear it coming for one thing). I would expect the chopper to be quite close before the threat is identified, and it may even be as they were flying over.

It would be easier to spot a group of infantrymen I would imagine though especially if they are moving.

So, I would say that actually, the game is pretty accurate. Of course, it would be different if the helicopter detected some kind of a missile lock - but I am not sure about how that works in reality.

My caveat is that I am not military and I have never had the fortune/misfortune to be at any end of an RPG or any other ground to air missile (to my knowledge anyway!). I have never been a pilot, but in my few experiences of flying in a helicopter, I would say that it is quite difficult to spot a lone human if you were travelling at speed. Obviously air crew are trained at spotting, so it maybe they would be able to do this?

I probably would find it unrealistic if a helicopter spotted a lone infantryman half a mile away every time. Lucky spot, yes, every time, no.

spotting inf should be strongly dependent from the terrain. On open tarmac it's really easy to spot someone, on open grassland it is already a bit harder (camo uniform on vegetation), and in (even light) forest it is basically impossible. In game, that should be done by the distance to the target when it is recognised, i.e. on tarmac under 200m it's an unknown target, closer than 100m it is an identified target; on grass 100m unknown, 50m identified; in forest, 50m unknown, 20m identified.

Yes, it would be cool if spotting distance varied based on contrast of camo uniform vs. background terrain and ground cover type (it apparently isn't now, see

Probably wouldn't be that hard to develop, but things are pretty good now as it is in terms of heli spotting.
