User-placed ingame markers

How exactly do user-placed in-game markers work? Do you have to be in a group with that person to see their markers they place? I've been in missions where it works and missions that are similarly set up where it doesn't work and wondered what the deal was.

Switch a channel with < or > keys

If it says group channel (green) - only your squadmates can see markers
If it says side channel (cyan) - the whole friendly army can see them
If it says global channel (white) - everyone can see them (yes your enemies too)
and so on
