Microphone stops working depending on who's hosting.

    Hello all!!

So, me n my buddy like playing this online, setting up our own missions.
Recently we bought ourselves two desktop mics to get rid of the old type type type chore...

The game works fine and both mics on each of our machines respond to an input in windows. We have boosted the signal, made sure we aren't monitoring the input (so we can't hear ourselves) and we can talk fine in game by double tapping caps, or holding it.

However, say if my mate hosts the game, which he normally does, his mic will always be able to be heard by me and mine is heard too but not for long. I think it happens at any point but I don't believe it's a set amount of time. It also seems like it happens when one of us dies, but again, it's temperemental.

If I host the game, on the other hand, his is the mic that will stop functioning after a while.

All I can think of is that it's because his ports aren't open for the game. Would that cause this behaviour? Should it cause it? I have forwarded ports in my router for Arma.

By the way, the mic always works outside of ARMA if I alt tab I can tap the mic in Control Panel Sounds and Audio Devices and see a signal.

I've updated to the latest drivers for all things on my machine and due to the fact that both mics work fine as long as we host the game, it means it must be something to do with the way ARMA is communicating to each of our PCs?

Any tips, workarounds or alternatives would be very interesting to hear.

PS, WOW , Operation Arrowhead is lovely. But isn't it nice to have a wonder around Chernarus again once in a while!

    My system:
    Asus P5WDG2WS Pro
    Q9550
    8800GT
    Corsair 6400RAM
    Windows 7.

    Machine is stable.

Mmm..sounds like you might need a dedicated program to handle your audio chat. XFire is a free program that works pretty well for audio, (despite not having full screen capture and video recording features enabled for Arma + OA). Even chat programs like yahoo or Live messenger might be better. Not sure if there is a freebie way of using ventrillo or team speak. My favourite is Xfire though. Never had any issues with it. Free sign up, free use. (Has been a bit of downtime the last few days, new owners, it could all go tits-up anytime), but in the meantime, might be worth a look.

    Ahh, a reply!!!

Hey, thanks Bascule42. Yeh heard of xfire and so will give it a shot.

Wonder what's causing my issue, though. Very strange.

I remember that a similar issue existed and was fixed by a patch back in the ArmA1 days, so it's weird to have this pop up again. However, on the few occasions that I have used the in-game VoN instead of TeamSpeak, it seemed to work fine for the whole mission, even several hours.

That was on dedicated servers mind you, so perhaps there is a problem with non-dedicated sessions.

I would install mumble set up a mumble server and be done with it.
You will NOT be disseminated with the sound quality of mumble its fantastic.

Just you and your mate/s spend 10mins setting it up and making sure you are all coming through loud an clear etc then go play.

It all so has a nice little overlay in games .
Me and my friends use it he has set up a dedicated mumble server and it really is that good.

Though I have found te VOIP in ARMA has come along way and has improved mumble still pisses all over it but then mumble cant simulate warfare hahahahaha.

Hmm, ok, MadDogX. Wonder if BIS are aware of this maybe continuing to be a problem in OA. Yet to try Arma 2 to host a game (now that we have OA and mics) but maybe we'd find no problem. Will have to try it.

Interesting stuff about mumble, stk2008. I'll give it a whirl and report back if I need your help!!
