    I don't believe so but I think its possible to add a non Steam game to my games list.

    This should allow you to use the Steam overlay in-game, chat/talk & friends...
    My son uses this method for some of his games. I am not sure about ArmAII.

    Exactly. You can not activate the game via Steam or make it part of your Steam games library but you can add it as non-Steam game to the list which should resolve most of problems.

    yes, combining distributions works fine ...
