Well, I very much like the addition of dedicated radio protocols however there is one thing I think they can do to make it even better. When a black op is taking place, or a squad is using stealth in general they do not risk giving away their position by whispering orders either in person or over the radio. When they go silent, they go SILENT, and only use hand signals to give orders. Of course it depends on the situation, however that is how it works. I think it would be cool if they added that to the stealth radio protocol, or created a new protocol named Radio Silence protocol or something. That would be extremely immersive and a first for a military game. You want Arma to be considered a true MilSim? Take that extra step and you'd be doing yourself a huge favor. Who else would like to see something like this in vanilla instead of waiting for a Mod for it like we did in ArmA 2?

Hi guys,
I have recently been thinking of transferring my game play time from BF3 to Arma, the main reason is that it seems to me to be a much more realistic game (and as an Army veteran that is what I am looking for).
As EA have disappointed me over and over again, I have come to realize the fact that I need to transfer to a better game then BF (don't get me wrong, I love FPS games, AA was great and BF is good, it's EA that is the problem).
now I am not saying I am a super player, far from it, but team work is what I am really looking for in a FPS multiplayer game, and this is where my question to you guys comes in:

I really don't want to buy another BF game where everyone runs around solo, I am looking for the teamwork in the game.
I have seen the videos on YouTube and they look great, but is the game REALLY like this? is team work in the game like on YouTube?
If not, I would just rather get BF4 when it comes out.

Thanks for your input,
DeltaSF.

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this;

I notice on a lot of videos on MP gameplay (Be it co-op or other) that there is a lot of coordination done by assets that normally wouldnt, and shouldnt be tasked with it.

Heres what I mean;
Lets say you are planning a coordinated raid on an HVT. You have multiple air assets, multiple ground assets, and many people doing many things at the same time. For a guy on the ground to fight, coordinate both air and ground forces, and move, is doable, but bloody difficult. Especially when you are flipping between your map, your first-person view, using teamspeak and switching between channels, you cant perform your most basic task - that of an infantryman. Aside of a Forward Air Controller, most guys on the ground will be involved in directly fighting the enemy. Yes, FACs are responsible for deconflicting air assets, and integrating precision fires with ground forces movements.

But when you might have 3-4 helicopters, fast jets, multiple ground callsigns, vehicles, etc etc.

Most Direct-Action operations have some form Command & Control (C2) element, whos task is to make sure that there is coordination between the air and ground assets. Usually, they comprise of an air element commander and a ground element commander, sat side-by-side, making the liason between the two much easier. They have FLIR cameras that allow them to watch in real-time what is going on on the ground, and a plethora of maps, radios, and communications gear.

Example: See 'Spoiler'
Spoiler:

show spoiler

Say you have 2 teams of SF being inserted by Littlebirds, followed by 2 infantry units providing a cordon and overwatch of the position, being inserted by MH-60s. 2 AH-6s will provide an initial sweep of the target, then any CAS as required. Whilst the units are in the air, the ground forces dont have much to coordinate - they cant move far because they are 50ft up, strapped onto the sides of a Littlebird or inside a Blackhawk. However, the air assets have to coordinate their movements - the AH-6 need to hit the target a few seconds before, then inform them that they are clear and going into the holding pattern, so that the MH-6s dropping of the SF can go in without the risk of blue-on-blue, followed by the Blackhawks on the outer cordon.

The air asset commander coordinates the insertion, makes sure all the units get in, are deployed, and that the air assets then leave and go into the holding pattern. He can then assign air assets to specific taskings throughout the operation.

The ground commander in the C2 aircraft then coordinates the assault on the target; which units go where, when, and how. If you need two go into two seperate buildings simultaneously, the units on the ground only have to radio in to say when they are ready to attack (say, stacked up on a door). The ground commander, watching with the FLIR camera, can then coordinate the assault, using the normal "Standby...Standby...Go" commands.

The assault complete, the HVT captured, the SF commander radios the ground element commander (sat in the C2 bird, who, having watched the operation, knows roughly what is going on) to say that the target has been secured, and that they are ready for extraction.

The C2 ground element commander then tells all the ground units to procede to the extract point. He coordinates the movement of the cordon teams, followed by the SF teams. He marks the Pick-up-point on the map. He then speaks directly to the air element commander, informing him that the ground element will be ready for extraction in approximately 5 minutes.

Rather than the ground commander ON THE GROUND having to radio through to the aircraft (switching frequencies sometimes), open up his map, create a marker, then move (and perhaps fight) through urban terrain, the ground element commander in the C2 aircraft does this for him. The ground element quickly checks their map, sees the marker, and procedes to move to it, allowing them to perform their main job of fighting and moving. The only radio calls he has to make are ones to confirm what he is doing and perhaps to call in assistance

Meanwhile, the air element commander has got on the radio net, informed the Littlebirds and MH-60s that the ground element are almost ready for extraction, and prepares them to begin the extract process. He also coordinates the AH-6s to sweep the pick-up-point (PUP), then circle the area, providing overwatch.

The ground element arrive at the pick-up-point, and radio the ground commander that the area is secure. The ground commander in the C2 bird informs the air commander (who is 'sat next to him') who then coordinates the extraction - the SF are picked up first by the Littlebirds, who, once clear of the PUP, go back into the holding pattern, whilst the MH-60s go in, pick up the infantry callsigns (the 'cordon' teams) and then lift. The whole air element then departs the area.

The point is that the actual liasing between the two forces, coordinating movements etc, is all done from one aircraft orbiting above the battlefield. The specific units that are actually conducting the assault only have to move, shoot, and communicate amongst themselves and to the ground element commander. They dont have to find LZs, switch radio frequencies to the air net back and forth. Things move smoothly, as they should.

For an example of what I mean, watch the initial moments of the assault in Black Hawk Down - the C2 aircraft flies around above the attack, coordinating the assault and the later movements of the ground forces when something goes wrong. Granted, they dont always get it right, but they make the movements and coordination of the teams a damnsight easier. They also provide the extra ability to see "the bigger picture" - by watching the raid through the FLIR (using PIP that is now present in ArmA3, the C2 aircraft might see that ambush being set up that nobody else has noticed. They can plot it straight to their own maps, directing CAS aircraft to attack it. They can lase targets themselves, should the ground forces be completely pinned down and unable to deploy a SOFLAM.

That said, having not played a large-scale game where this might be applicable, I am wondering whether or not this would actually be of use?
It might provide some nice depth, and a novel new position to play in, especially when you arent on a server where everyone wants to be General Patton.

So, as per the title...discuss!
Matt.

What i've Seen
Now to me it looks like they way people play arma is different. Now the reason i say this is it seems that most of the game types aren't really what they used to be. Like Domination Or Evo, Now these game types are really what brings out the fun in arma and shows what it can do. Now idk if this is only because we are in Alpha but Right now im only seeing Wasteland And TDM servers :(... To me wasteland is o most like a Apocalypse/Life type game, with tdm and well it just doesnt feel right. I've played arma for a very long time, (Since Arma 1 came out) and to me it feels like the player base is changing. I think its changing because the DayZ mod brought it a bunch of newer players that i think is great, BUT they are used to BF3/COD and other FPS like that and now because there are more of them then older arma players it seems like people are trying to bring in the FPS type style game play into arma which i am not happy about at all, just because they arent patient enough to learn how to play the game like they can to its full potential. And i understand that its hard to learn when you dont have any support so i think that the experienced arma players need to start making detailed tutorials and explanations of how to play arma realilistically but keep it fun. So with that said I love the game, i love Bohemia Interactive and the games they make, i even bought the supporter addition, but i just dont want to see the old game types like Domi And evo go away because a bunch of old FPS players outnumber the normal players.

So now let me ask what do you guys think.

If this is in the wrong area please move it to the proper one, i tried to find a spot to fit but couldnt find any other then the general board.

Ok. So, I know that Dean Hall wasn't the one who ported it over I am assuming that a user did. But I mean, come on. DayZ has ruined the truly genuine community of Arma 2 by filling up the server list with nothing but DayZ servers. But now you're telling me people are going to start trying to ruin the Arma 3 community without it even being final release yet? Come on, keep your DayZ shit to Arma 2 and wait for standalone. Don't fill up the Arma 3 server list with DayZ servers, that's why they are making a standalone. I am not raging here, I just think it is highly annoying that already, still in alpha, DayZ is in Arma 3 and I bet half the people who have bought Arma 3 are going to come stumbling in to your tactical server, and start blowin shit up because they are DayZ and CoD fanboys. And I am not hating on DayZ or anything, in fact I quite enjoy the game, and am anticipating the standalone. But there is a reason I am stoked about both DayZ standalone AND Arma 3. it is because the DayZ players can stay in their own DayZ community, without polluting the Arma community and vice versa. Idk, when I play Arma 3 I don't like seeing DayZ servers populating the list. I play Arma 3 for the MilSim aspects. I was excited that I wouldn't have to worry about running into a plethora of DayZ servers when looking for a good server to play in. I just think it is pretty dumb to port it over to Arma 3. Just be patient and wait for standalone for christ's sake.

Anyhow, that is my personal opinion on the matter. What do you guys think?

P.S. No flaming, trolling, insulting, raging etc. I just want to hear your genuine opinions, not get raged at or have others raging at each other, that is not my intention.

Morning all,

This may seem like a bit of a weird question, but I figure I'd ask anyway;

I'm looking at a little DIY project of turning a standard "push-pull" PC throttle unit into a Collective control for ArmA 3 - the idea being, the throttle is set into a frame which is then rigged up on the side of the chair, so when you pull the collective lever up, provided the control scheme is configured correctly within the game (just a question of reversing the axis if needs be), the throttle increases and the helicopter goes up. I can then extend out the wiring from the buttons in the original throttle module so I can assign them to whatever is suitable.

I intend to get a 3D printed handle for the end of the collective, within which I will mount the buttons. The frame will be made from MDF wood, with a mix of PVC plastic piping and MDF.

It will remain a USB-connected device.

Obviously, using a helicopter collective to control a fast-jet is going to be a bit of a pain in the backside, as "throttling up" by pulling the lever up is counter intuitive for a fixed-wing aircraft - you push the throttle forward to increase thrust. So, instead, I would have a seperate throttle module on the desk that I would use for fixed-wing.

My question is, will there be any issues with having TWO throttle modules and 1 joystick connected via USB, or will I only be able to use one throttle module at a time? Would I be able to use a USB input switcher, and would this require me to leave the game in order for the newly selected throttle set-up to work? I understand I can set up different buttons and axis for different things on different vehicle types, my question is, can I have seperate 3 seperate inputs - One joystick, two throttle modules?

Cheers for any help on this!
Matt.

What should we expect to see?
Tanks - Are there only going to be 1 tank per side? (Merkava and the Russian one which I forgot the name of)
Are we going to see active counter AT missile systems? (Iron fist and Trophy)
I know on modern tanks there are systems which let you shoot down attack helicopters are they going to be implamented in the game?
Reactive armor... Are we getting it?
Aircrafts - Smartbombs/Laser guidance, How will it work if it will be implamented?
Out of sight engangments will be aviable?
Stealth aircraft will actually be stealthy? (If the player will have a radar)
Will G forces have real effect on your aircraft?
For now thats pretty much what I can think of and I dont expect answers just disscussion over the matter.
Also cruise missiles.... Just saying... Balistic ones too...
