View Full Version : Dynamic weather system
As promised last week here’s a small update on our work, and yes we’re working hard to deliver the best game possible!
We have succeeded recently in updating the dynamic weather system. Which means there’ll be different weather and day time in the game which is already looking really impressive! Our weather system dynamically simulates this feature across the whole archipelago. There’s also a wind effect (for example on the trees). Daytime reflects the cycle of the Taurus moon as you can see it in the attached screens, we hope you all like the progress the game is making visually and are as excited as we are with the progress it’s making!

Looking very nice indeed.
With the moon that close there are going to be some high tides!

That is awesome!!! Congrats!
Very impressive, thanks for the news.
Sweet indeed! Nice shots.

I totally dig the sun rays as seen in the 2 bottom shots :p
Wow looks very nice. Very interested in this game by the way, sounds very promising!

Looking damn good. Sun rays is one fine addition, don't neccessarly need alot of power, nor DX10-DX11, to produce it either (ref: Tropico 3)
Also the vegitation got a really great and smooth texture/LOD.
Are we looking at new shader technology, new way of processing alpha or something else? Whatever it is, I hope that there will be some blog posts
about what lurks behind the curtains of CC:GM. How and what techs are used is always interesting. :b:
That's very impressive. Can't wait for this game!
Nice effects...
Though, it seems they chose to sacrifice some object density (grass and clutter) in favour of draw distance (and probably performance)...
I'm eager to see what this game will be.

Looking great.
I am impressed. Can't wait for the game
That looks fantastic indeed! One question though: will the clouds be animated? Or will they be static, just like ArmA2? I'm asking because the clouds on the top screenshots are exactly the same.
Thanks for some great screens. Looking real nice. I can imagine the full game! :)

these 2 screens were taken only few seconds apart. I just used debug cheat to quickly change the daytime.
The clouds are animated and change with time.

Thank you Johny for the clarification! It really looks incredible, I can't wait to see it moving!

This looks really awesome, can’t wait for this game. One small thing that concerns me tough: The black colored water. It was there in Arma 2 as well and annoyed me to no end. As a former military coastguard I can appreciate that deep water looks blackish from time to time, but only during heavy skies. In sunlight the ocean always looks blue, beautiful glittering blue…

Not trying to bash the game or anyting. Just pasing along my suggestions. But this being a BIS game, I know it will kick ass. Cant wait:)

j/k, these screens looks stunning and although i have to admit that i don't know the original, i surely buy this game, be it just to support BIS for developing ArmA 3.
But i'm sure the game will be great and worth every cent.
^^ Agreed. I did play the original and it was real fun. Im still trying to get my head around playing this ARMA style with the great openess. :)
Definatelly ending up in my BIS collection.
Looking very promising, love the Taurus Moon from the planet view. keep it up guys.

Since its a sci-fi set up, I really don't mind if the water is black

Just curious will this dynamic weather system have an significant effect on player/AI too - except showing the great atmosphere? :)

Also, in a lot of some places the sea is just muddy brown. :p
Because some of you were interested in seeing animated clouds we prepared short ingame video showing clouds moving in the sky.
MGMFkBxBTuo
The sky consists of two cloud layers, the first layer is static for far clouds on the horizon but the second layer composed of closer cloud formations is fully animated - it changes shape and position and is affected by the sun’s position, as well as other weather conditions, so for example the fact that a storm is coming can be read from the clouds getting thicker and darker. All this adds to the real life feel of the sky above Taurus.

Ah yes, that would be a very good addition.
The video is really nice. I liked the light rays coming through the leaves.

Good to see the RV engine is still extremely capable of putting others to shame. That looks great, hopefully it will run great too.
Very... atmospheric. Nice art.
The light shaft effects is nice too.
I suspect the trees are moving so much because of accelerated time otherwise there's hell of a storm approaching...

RV engine?
I thought it was only using linda as a graphical engine.
Can anyone clarify this?

I think I'm correct in saying that Linda merely generates the vegetation, it is not a full game engine, for which Real Virtuality would be used for Carrier Command.

Yeah, Linda simply generates vegetation. However, I believe noone at BI has confirmed whether RV is being used for Carrier Command (pls correct me if i'm wrong).

It's pretty obviously RV. Unless BIS has been developing a new engine in secrecy for a few years now...

The game is AFAIK made by both Black Element and Bohemia. BE has their own engine which they very well may be using.
A developers comment on this would be great :)
Its not RV, its different engine developed for that game.
But it has its origin in RV, or does it not?! It really looks familiar somehow :D
No, but we offcourse share some alghorithm ideas, vegetation from linda, mocap or 3D scanning technology, some postprocess efects and so on

You could have (and did for that matter) fooled me.
So then who's been developing it all this time? Same team who's been working on RV or a different one? Black Element? I crave info... :p

This may be a stupid question from a technical view but that very nice lightray effect in the static shots, is that realtime volumetrics creating the rays or a type of overlay from something like After Effects ?
Lovely piccys btw.
Its real time ingame.
Awesome so we have a contender for the ArmA3 engine???? :D:D

hope they include some possible outerspace type missions above the planets atmosphere
death matches inside starships etc, possibly wonder outside with no gravity .

I've read through as much of the ad material and other literature as I can find (love the thread involving one of the original CC devs) but I still don't have a real grip on how the game is going to play - some first person, some vehicle, some carrier combat?
Regardless, the visuals on offer so far are stunning and I'm really looking forward to this release.

I think it will play a lot like the battlestation games ie midway meets a basic RTS game like CC games. I just want a BOHEMIA game for the console. I gave up on the ARMA games:( but I still have hope for this one:cool: Hi ohara, placebo and my best friend wolle.

Just a shame that the graphics aren't up to Arma standards. Damn consoles :p

The screen shots look really nice, I can tell from the pictures that its not the RV engine, just some ideas from it where used, it looks kind of empty tough but maybe that's just one place on the map.
I would like to know, will the game be as easily modifiable like ArmA and OFP (I mean will we be able to create our addons/islands?) And will it be compatible with Oxygen 2 or will there be some new tools?
Anyway, can't wait for the game  I know BIS probably won't answer this but will development of the RV engine continue or will it continue joined with the other engine after Carrier Command?

Nearly a year gone by. Any chance of a progress post?
Well it seems that not only do they have a dynamic weather system, but also a Dynamic Time system, and that it's stuck on "Valve Time"...

Just curious, but at 15 seconds, what mechanism causes one planet to rise to the top right and the other to fall in from the top left?
