Hi all,

I think the time has come to finally make a dedicated post in this forum that points to AddonSync2009.
You can download it here (http://dev-heaven.net/projects/list_files/yoma-addonsync2009).
You can view what's been done/what's up for next version here (http://dev-heaven.net/projects/roadmap/yoma-addonsync2009).
You can view the bugtracker here (http://dev-heaven.net/projects/yoma-addonsync2009/issues).

Some basic demonstration movies (yes they are crappy, maximise your browser and be a bit patient)

Adding a server and launching Arma (http://www.yomatools.be/images/stories/1_AddingAServerAndLaunchingTheGame.swf)
Some launching tricks (http://www.yomatools.be/images/stories/2_AddonSyncLaunchGameTricks.swf)
An example for downloading addons (http://www.yomatools.be/images/stories/3_AddonSyncDownload.swf)
Arma 2 beta warnings (http://www.yomatools.be/images/stories/4_AddonSyncBetaWarnings.swf)

The tool requires .NET 2.0 or higher.

Features:

Download/upload sets of addons (great for squads/servers that use addons). The basic goal here is to keep people in sync with the addons the server uses. It can also be used to deploy an ever changing mod, as Kju has proven quite well with CAA1. It uses MD5 checksums for files and can verify individual files.
Launch Arma(2), various launch options, including "modsets" (which are simply groups of addonfolders), these groups can be given a relevant name and are also linked to the server, so you don't have to go look for the correct addons to use each time you connect to a server.
Check who's playing/what mission/server parameters realtime. Can also monitor a server and autolaunch Arma(2) with different conditions (stuff like autolaunch when game restarts, autolaunch when a player slot becomes available)
Look for servers via Gamespy Query. You can create and save your own custom filters, the tool also pings servers, launches game straight from gamespy query list or offers the opportunity to add a server to your defaults list.
Has a "favorites" server list and can query the favorites list, so you can quickly see what's going on, only on the servers you want to see.
Easily launch beta versions without the need to select beta executable (just select the beta folder in a modset).
Upon downloading addons, create hardlinks to files that would otherwise be duplicated on your disk.
Active check for Arma2 beta versions (it actually compares the build version you have in your beta folder to the latest published online build and will only warn you if you have a different beta version)
Can launch a dedicated server (great for testing addons) using the same modset as the one you use for launching the game.
Can autolaunch any program you want before launching the game. (Great for joystick profilers, voip stuff etc), built-in support for launching TeamSpeak.
Basic multilanguage support, will need some people for translations soon.
Get basic context sensitive help (English only) by pressing F1 on the form you're seeing.
Scripted builds (and uploads) of online mod repositories, automated signing process for addons. (server admins can even autogenerate private keys) The signing process requires the BIS sign tools to be installed.

Feel free to post your comments, suggestions, requests here or even better yet post them in the bugtracker on devheaven (or via the "report bug" button inside the tool).
If you need help (setting it up as a server admin) feel free to contact me via PM. I'll be sure to contact you as I get time.
Special thanks goes out to all the people that have commited time to reporting bugs, requesting features and generally being in support of my effords.
Very special thanks to Kju, you are a great guy!

Great stuff Yoma..as always. Good that you decided to post-up a dedicated thread.
I use it a lot, especially for external server/ongoing game and player listing, My in-game list does not populate all the MP servers due to Win7x64.

Yoma uses the actual list element in your post.
It makes the post more readable.

A powerful tool no doubt!

I have however heard from quote a few of my online friends that they dont understand it. I agree that this new version is more intimidating.
If you could make it more "out of the box" userfriendly and make all fancy features available for the ones that needs them maybe?
I also used your old arma version as a gamelauncher, not to connect to servers. i can do it with this too, but it wasnt so intuitive in the beginning.

My thought is if its setup more like a launcher more people would use it and get used to it. Rigt now I hear too much "naah, it seems so complicated". And thats a waste of something this powerful and good.

Nice tool and with F1 helpfile included. Maybe this helpfile should have an extra Step-by-Step guide and additional on buttons some mouseover tip/help? Btw is it possible to save the size of Yoma Launcher window - everytime its opening as full screen? Thanks!

I agree with andersson and NoRailGunner. Anything which makes this powerful tool more userfriendly is welcome and a step-by-step guide seems a good idea to me.

I don't know if this is even possible, but in my opinion a product combining the features of apinestar's launcher and Yoma's downloading tool would be a great thing to have. And then sites like armaholic, sw-depot, etc. should be using it, so that anyone can easily keep their addon-folders up-to-date and choose the right combination of mods for any given type of game or mission. I daresay that more servers would tolerate addons if it was simpler for the players to have the correct versions running on their computers. This in turn might motivate more people to create content, which would be good for the whole community.

As it is now, I only download addons which are required by the mission I want to play and when in doubt I choose a mission which doesn't require too many addons.

When clicking the upload addons tab, is it possible not to have everything selected by default? It's a bit of a pain if you have to uncheck many folders every time when you have just a couple of mods to upload.
Best would be to be able to set up your specific folders like we used to have in the older app. Or maybe we can but I missed that.

Thanks!

I agree that addonsync 2009 need a simple how to use guide. All the ArmA players know what it does and why because all the features were discussed in the old ArmA thread.
It may be hard to understand what it does and may even look a bit too complex for the newcomer.

Also Arma2 being too young is also a factor. As the number of released addons/mods/ports increase and when the servers start allowing/disallowing mods more strictly, people will come to grasps about the importance of this handy tool ;) .

Check out the batch files and xml files that come with them.
You can now script the entire process of building a repository. (And even put it in scheduled tasks if you want to.)
The scripted repo builder has more functionality then the gui one.
Also you can do a right mouse button and click uncheck all ;-)

What exactly can Alpinestar's launcher do that AddonSync2009 can not?

Frankly speaking, I have no idea. I guess I shouldn't have used the word "features".

The big advantage of Alpinestar's launcher is that it gets the job done with a simple and self-explanatory user interface. Some users ask little questions about Alpinestar's launcher, but people don't have to ask for tutorials.

The big advantage of your tool is that launcher and downloader are one single program. You as the developer of this software obviously spend a lot of time with it. I can understand that you find it strange that some, maybe just a few people have problems with it. Perhaps it is fair to say that a user who is willing to put some effort into learning how to use your tool can benefit greatly but casual users may find themselves overwhelmed by its complexity.

A big issue is that people actually think it's more difficult then it is.
Anyway, each to their own thing.
But users that can manage to play Arma in a decent fashion can surely manage to use my tool, if they want to.

If you fail to give concrete suggestions, how should he be able to improve it?

And yes I believe everyone can learn to understand the app fully in less than one hour.
Yet only few people have enough patience and dedication these days.
One hour for that huge feature set is nothing.

Well, what we are saying is one thing that can be improved is the userfriendliness. Right now it seems that people start it up and dont know what to do with it. I had to work with it for a while, I knew it benefit me, but when I get my webserver up Im not looking forward to persuade people to use it and explain how to.

Honestly I dont really know how to improve the tool, because Im not sure Im using it the best way.. I have setup a server by adding a new one, filling in whats needed. Now I just doubleclick that server and press launch. Magic :) (Thank you).

But in the beginning I just wanted to start arma2.. And I wanted to DL caa1. So I couldnt find where to launch arma2. I went through settings and filled in all necessary. But where is that launch button, and where to choose what modfolders?
It didnt take long to find the tab, after you figure out ow to add a webserver (my case caa1), where you could DL addons. But still a few moments of frustration.

Thats my biggest gripe, it isnt intuitive at the first look. I have used your launcher for arma1. That was easier and more intuitive (and I still had to tell people step by step how to DL addons for my server).
I have patience (not as I once had but still ok), I know your tool is worth the minutes it takes to learn it.
But alot of people dont know it, and they start it up and think "what now, whats this for?". Why would they try to figure it out as there are easier launcher available? (We know why, but they dont).

Yes tutorials are needed, we got that at post #14 (thanks kju). I havent seen them before.

What about a tutorial how to use this tool to choose modfolders and start a SP game? How to use this as a "normal" launcher? I would like that :) Right now I added a server that doesnt exist, no IP. So when I doubleclick that I can launch arma2 without connecting to a MP game.

Dont take all of the feedback wrong. I guess you started this thread for feedback and info? It seems users are generally uncertain how (and why?) to use it. I wanted to give feedback before about this things, but dev-heaven had no forum for this tool. And nothing of this is worth a ticket as its just toughts and feedback.

With all this, please read it the right way. This tool is fantastic! I would DL and use it if I had to compile it myself.. But it is, at first impression, intimidating and confusing.

Nov 7 2009, 09:26
kju,

you have a valid point there. I thought about this myself. But anything I may say can be countered by something like: You just don't try hard enough to understand it.

Last night, for example, I applied yoma's tool to launch a game with a few addons. (Until then, I had only used the download sync function) I had to read the instructions, click through a few pages, couldn't find out how to launch the game (but I discovered several nice features other apps don't offer and thought: This is great!). Suddenly the right button was just under my mouse, I clicked it and it worked like a charm. So it is correct to say: The tool offered what I wanted I just didn't understand the help function provided. So, what should I suggest? Place the launch button somewhere else? This would be silly.

All I can say - and I say it full of respect for Yoma's work - is that it is not intuitive. For me simplicity of use is an important feature in any software I use for work or for pleasure. This purely my own personal approach, of course.

In reply to Alan.rio: The "Germany Fun"-server uses yoma's tool. I have never played there, but I downloaded all their addons (literally hundreds of them) using Yoma's tool - just to try it out, because the idea was so fascinating. The server provided an excellent manual explaining how to install Yoma's tool and how to download the files. I wouldn't have been able to achieve the same result without this external document.

But, as far as I remember, this document did not explain the app - it just said, click here, type this, etc. and everything was based on screenshots. You could not learn a lot but it worked.

I am very sorry, I cannot be more constructive. I can only describe my experience with this app. The best I can do is to suggest a meeting on TS and talk things over while actually using the tool.

Edit: andersson was quicker to reply. It is interesting that our experiences seem to be somewhat similar.

I think this is a good suggestion. Personally I always thought YAS needed a SP tab for lauching game with mod selector, without connecting to MPgame in terms of design.

Yes this is not exactly what AddonSync is for but it would be really handy and make things easier for the average player. Especially if it can detect all the non-standard (non-BIS) folders and list them as possible mods. You can always add the mod paths manually of course.

Follow the KISS rule - Keep It Short and Stupid ermm Simple.
Most people like fancy and modern looking designs and easy-to-use (clicky features). Maybe its helps if you make extra trendy & accessible interfaces for Launcher Options, SP, MP, Server-Settings ? Sex-up your launcher :supercool:

Ok lets step back one moment.

To me it looks you do not have the right picture here.

It is not YAS vs app XY. It is use app XY for simple mod folder launching.

YAS is for downloading/updating addons from a given game server or download server.
Or to configure a different mod sets for different servers.

In other words, YAS is server centric. What other tool is that?
So you are saying YAS should in addition non server centric?

Of course the workflow could be more obvious and straight forward,
and you are good to make suggestions here, yet failing to understand
the core difference just does not work.

So again the tool is by all means not perfect for its purpose,
yet without concrete suggestions this is going nowhere.

Just tick the "local game" checkbox, and it will not connect to the server but just start the game locally with selected modset.

Let me just try to explain something about the interface:
Most of the people that don't understand it want 1 form for one task.
The problem is that if you want to give a tool the functionallity i wanted to give it, that simply doesn't work.
The basic interface is really not hard: you click or doubleclick something and a tab opens with more details.
There are valid reasons for this approach. For instance you can monitor several servers at the same time.

andersson
Nov 7 2009, 14:37
@kju. Fair enough. But for me the use is also the same as app XY. I see no reason to have app XY in parallell to YAS as it can handle it.

I don't want to sound pushy because I like YAS the way it is now but what I am saying is -> You have the SP functionality in there...just make it more visable so that it can be used much easier.

Why do I have to go to "New Server" and then "Launch Game" and select mods and give them a name and save them. I cannot see what is included in that modset unless I doubleclick on it. Hope you can see where this is going.

Personally I'm not using any launcher to start Arma, I use the shortcut and modify parameters if necessary. But for your tool, just make it more accessible.
You already have 2 tabs there. Add another one for SP, make the mods selectable on the left panel. If they want they can define a modset, they can do so using what you already did. If you add a "Profile_Name" Selector, you are done..you'll have a simple yet effective SP launcher, which can also be used for MP monitoring

I know it is not exactly what this tool is for but I think if YAS is used more frequently by the clients, they will demand it from server admins which will increase the number of servers using it. ;)

I'm considering adding a tab "Launch Local Game" which would basically add the launch game thing in the main tab.
However I won't be changing how it basically works.
By the way when you singleclick on a modset you do see what it contains ;)
And maybe some users will find this even more confusing.

A different approach could be to have 2 servers in there by default "Local Arma2" and "Local Arma" with parameters set accordingly.

Anyway, after reading through this thread again, i think my basic approach is about to change into
-like it => use it
-don't like it => don't use it

It's impossible to cater to everyone and there are plenty of other launchers out there that might fit your needs.
Wether people want to use my tool or not is not really that important.
All i can say is good luck to those server admins and users that want to use addons online once they get more popular, let's see how userfriendly that is :-)
The main reason for opening this thread was just to inform people that the tool exists.

andersson

I hope you didnt take my post in a bad way Yoma. I do think this tool is excellent and Im "-like it=> use it".

And there is no way to maintain a server with mods without your tool, imo.

What I been talking about is what I hear from others and my first impression, and how that could be improved to really make this tool more used. The more that uses it the easier it is for all server-admins (and players).

Regardless, you have done a very good job and Im a happy user. Thank you!

Well a .yas file is a file you can import with the tool (if you associate the windows file type .yas with my tool)

It's just a different way to import lists of servers.
The goal was to be able to put a file on your webserver and just click it, where addonsync would open up at the import server screen.
It's one of the things i would need to work out a bit better to be really usefull.

From the next version on i'll be deploying with msi setups.
The setup will place a shortcut to yas on your desktop, associate .yas filetype with the tool and automatically launch the tool.
This is to ease up the update process and ease up stuff for noobish people.
This could make the .yas thing more interesting as it will no longer be needed to manually accociate the .yas filetype.
(you can export a list of download servers from the favorites list or a single server from the server detail tab)
Basically you'll be able to put a .yas file on your website, people download the .yas file, run it and they will get the list of servers to import.

Also in the next version you'll be able to select a specific folder to download a modset to, this will be saved on a per server basis. If no folder is selected it will default to the arma(2) gamefolder.

What does the hardlinks do exactly...

Does it create links to the original files in the Arma2 folder rather than copying them to the repository folder and creating 7z?

Also can you explain the cache a bit more? Why should we create a cache?
We have 3 dedi servers and they are in 3 different folders like Arma1, Arma2, Arma3, and they all have their own repository folder and file. Does this create any issues re cache?

great job

great job

The caching is actually just "cache of md5". Calculating full MD5 of big files can take a bit of time. What the cache does is it stores the MD5's in a small database, together with the date_changed of the file.
When the tool needs to check the md5 of the same file again, it will fetch it from the database if the file hasn't changed. (this allows for superfast compares when the md5 is in cache and hasn't changed)
If the file has changed it simply recalculates the md5 and stores it in the cache db.

The full rebuild of cachedb in settings, just runs over your arma(2) folder and removes records of files that no longer exist and calculates checksums of files that are new/changed.
It's shouldn't be really needed, but is just a bit of cleaning/updatings procedure.

The hardlinks option works as follows:

-server A with addonA.pbo in folder /@ServerA
-server B with addonA.pbo in folder /@ServerB
-Addon A is allready downloaded and in MD5 cache
-you start downloading the addons of server B
The tool detects that you allready have a file that's exactly the same.
The tool now has 3 options
a) download the file (slow and unneeded)
b) copy the file over to the @ServerB folder (cool, but file get's duplicated)
c) create a hardlink to the file and avoid it from taking up duplicate diskspace.
d) if the hardlink doesn't work, fallback to the normal copy process

It's an experimental feature, but seems to work pretty good.
By the way to check the hardlink feature you cannot check "folder size", but need to check size taken up on the entire disk (ntfs will just return the file size to explorer for the hardlink as well).

The full rebuild of cachedb in settings, just runs over your arma(2) folder and removes records of files that no longer exist and calculates checksums of files that are new/changed.
It's shouldn't be really needed, but is just a bit of cleaning/updatings procedure.

OK got it now. Also, can you confirm, it creates the db for files in the given Arma2-program folder ?...ie ArmA2 directory provided in Settings tab.
But unfortunately it will not do it for 3 servers I have in 3 different folders...at least not for now.

Thanks for the info. Its much clearer now.
A followup question; this detection is within the same folder I assume.
For example, if I am downloading the mods to folder c:\mulder1\@folder1, it will search & try to find same files under c:\mulder1 and NOT under c:\programs\Arma2.
OR
does it search all the custom modfolders listed in db + default ArmA2 ?

The cache db generation via settings will only work on via the set game folder. (for now)

However whenever the tool calculates a md5 it goes through the same function you if for example you do a "compare" in another folder, all the pbo files' caches will be calculated and stored in the db.

Of course the location on disk (fullpath) is included in the databaserecord.
When downloading it will look in the entire cache db, but it will no longer actively scan folders. So the "copy" process itself is purely based on what's in the cache db and only if that's still the current situation on disk.

What exactly do you mean? CRC64?
And if so: what exact implementation?
I attempted to sign some unsigned files (with a private key), but it came back with a "This is not a 64 bit app" error.
This could just be caused from the BI Tools?
I'm using W7-64.

When I have time, I will attempt the procedure on a XP-32 pc.

It launches a local dedi server of course, not on a remote server.

There can be tons of stuff that cause this not to work.
An ill-configured autoconfig file for example.
What server are you trying to add.
What version of the tool are you using.
What errormessage do you get.

You should be running v1.0.41 beta.

You can now put a *special* repo file on the same ip as the gameserver.
Then people can add your server via gamespy list and just click "import" or "download".
:D

Yoma
Dec 1 2009, 20:51
Some changes to the "autoimport from gamespy" behaviour.

-you can add YAS[] tag to your Gamespy server name
(For example name your server "Yoma's super server YAS[]")

You then have several options to point to the "autoconfig url file"
#IP# = game server ip obtained from gamespy.
#PORT# = game port number obtained from gamespy.

-my tool would parse whatever is between YAS[]
-if you put YAS[FTP] => try fetching from game server ip via FTP (ftp://#IP#/yas#PORT#.7z)
-if you put YAS[HTTP] => try fetching from game server ip via HTTP (http://#IP#/yas#PORT#.7z)
-if you put YAS[ftp://myserver] =>try fetching from this address via link (ftp://myserver/yas#PORT#.7z)
-if you put YAS[http://myserver] =>try fetching from this address via link (http://myserver/yas#PORT#.7z)
-if you put YAS[http://myserver/myfile.7z] =>try fetching from the full url
-if you put YAS[ftp://myserver/myfile.7z] =>try fetching from the full url
-if you put YAS[] => default to YAS[HTTP] behaviour
-if no YAS[] tag is found => default to YAS[HTTP] behaviour.

This feature may be very nice for server admins to get clients configured.
(just tell them import the server from gamespy list inside the tool and then click "import server" or "download")

Great improvement & feature Yoma..

This makes the need for creating new server & adding autoconfig URL for the user obsolete. A major improvement to automate addon downloading & synchronizing with servers.

Just couple of lines for clarification..

As a server admin, all you need to do is;
-Make a copy of your autoconfig_repository.7z
-Rename it to to YAS#port#.7z (eg YAS2302.7z or YAS2402.7z or both if you have 2 servers)
-Place it under Root folder of your IP (or to any one of the options provided above)

I also recommend all servers who use AddOnSync2009 to add YAS tag to their names so that players can know on which servers they can sync addons with one click ;)

Yoma
Dec 1 2009, 21:47
A minor addition to the above: this does require a webserver or ftpserver to be running on the gameserver.

If you only have an ftp server on the gameserver: just check the YAS[FTP] syntax above.

If you need help, send me a PM and when i get the time we can get on TS.

It should throw a popup when tool is not run "as admin" and you try downloading to "program files".

If it throws the popup and you confirm it should restart the app "as admin".

After that it should be possible to download directly to the program files folder instead of to that obscure folder in user profile.

-You shouldn't have deleted the folder at all... the errormessage you get is due to that, not due to corrupt msi file.
-If you want to remove Addonsync check the Install Programs item in your configuration screen of windows...
-Google for Windows Installer Cleanup Utitility as you've now screwed over windows installer.
-Next time when updating: just download the msi file, close addonsync and run the msi.

Dec 22 2009, 19:38
What exactly can you do on the server?
-If you can install AddonSync on the server you could have it build a repository automatically throught the autorepobuilder.exe (check the xml files for configuration)
-If you have no permissions to install stuff on the server you could have the autorepobuilder.exe automatically upload differential repositories to your FTP.

Contact me if you need help setting it up. If you're making a autobuilder script, be sure to make a copy of one of the example xml files and rename it.
Do not remove any tags from the xml, or the autobuilder will fail.

At a certain point you need to fill in an auto-config url but of course I can just enter something there, but how do I create a config so it works? Also, the config url ends with .7z, I don't understand really?

And I'm not really sure if the tutorials for the OLD VERSION are still applicable to the new one? I'm kinda lost at the moment as to how to set the server up so it works. I'm also unable to connect to the server, but I think it's because the auto-config url is simply a "random" chosen config location.

So basically I setup the ftp locations, followed all the steps in the help and was able to package and upload a test addon via Yoma. But getting Yoma to recognize the server as an addon server, I'm not sure how to do that...

Autoconfig url is created in the root folder of your YAS repository.
What exactly do you want to do ?
Are you working on the server itself thru RDC or only have an FTP connection ?
Can you run AddonSync on the server?

- I see, I used the in-built ftp system so I never took a look at the output folder. I assumed that everything would be uploaded automatically.

- What I want is that people of our gaming community can download all our addons running on our server/in our missions by using AddonSync. This way we can distribute all required and recommended addons smooth and easy.

So I assume you have filled in all the FTP info as well as FTP destination in the servertab>addonservertab.

Make sure the FTP destination where the repository / config.7z reside is open to public access.
Also check that folder and see that all the 7z files are there ss well as the autoconfig.7z in the root.

All the update button does is open the browser that windows considers the default browser and browse to the link.
So this may boil down to browser security settings, or some strange behaviour of some browsers (like Chrome that has no FTP implemented).
The Chrome remark is not really relevent as the files reside on HTTP.
If I ever get the time I might look into downloading the file "manually", that would also open up some better upgrade options (like exit the tool on download completion)

Very little chance of this happening. (Would be a tad too bugprone and the repo is kind of important ;-) )

Just found out another use for the tool showing signatures reported by GameSpy.
If you launch your server and people can't connect, you may have sig's enabled but forgot to put the keys for the addons in the keys folder.
If you check your server with my tool it now shows the signatures that are being used.

Just make a profile ingame, it will then be selectable inside the tool. In one of the patches BIS has changed profile name that uses the same "name" as your windows login to "system"...

My problem: Random files from the Yomas addonsync give me errors when they finish downloading. If i try and play it says that it is expecting a different file size and does not continue. The same 4-5 files are always highlighted blue and it always says they have been "changed".

It has resorted to, when finished downloading, give an error box popup but no text. I tried using kellys heroes but that did it aswell. I deleted all the mods and started again but that didnt work. I reinstalled yomasync but that didnt work. I have completely run out of ideas.

-Make sure you don't start Arma while downloading
-Are you using WinXP64?
-Go to settings and untick "use cache", then try downloading the repo.
It will work slower but might solve the problem.

The "use password" box is only for client side (it set's the client password, not the server password)!
I think you'll have to edit some config file to actually launch an arma server passworded.
For client side usage (for connecting to servers), you just need to set the password on the server properties (game server, password). There is no need to use the custom argument for setting a password.
Also the tool will automatically check the use password box if the server is currently using a password.

I'm not encountering the error you are suffering from (if you're talking about the error you mention in the ACE forum)
There seems to be a problem with certain versions of 7z and i'll upgrade it in next version. Maybe this will solve your problem. You could also try to use a different updater if mine doesn't work for you.

Do you have any other system at home e.g. a winxp32 system where you could test the download on?

No, used to but it got a virus and is now defunct. Which is a real bugger.
The error i get does mention 7z in the message so it may be a problem.

Also, you mentioned a pattern between this error and winxp64. It makes me think that there may be a connection between the 7z that your extractor uses and winxp64. ??? totally ridiculous? or might there be a connection?

That's what i mention above. Another route to inspect would be a slowish virusscanner or *something* on your system that actually keeps files locked just after completing download, so 7z cannot read from the file.
What virusscanner do you use?

I am having trouble with the ACE updater simply not working and someone suggested using this one in order to download and install ACE for me. However can I ask a quick question about this addon please?...

At first glance it looks to be online/multiplayer oriented - is this true?

I don't have a server, nor do I play online, I play SP only - so is this 'Yoma addon sync' for me?

Alex72
Feb 9 2010, 08:54
This is not an addon as such... This is an addon download/maintaining tool among other things. Install it and youll see it has an interface. There is information in the program when you start it. You add a server that hosts the addons you need - in this case Kellys Heroes (ACE) so search their thread in here. Click SEARCH button and set it to SHOW POSTS. Then put in "Kellys Heroes Ace" as search word. That should bring threads up where they post their server info.

Yoma's addon sync can also be used for starting the game plus teamspeak etc. You can have several favourite servers loaded into it, and if the servers also use Yoma's tool then you can even see what addons those servers run, and also see if they use another version (updated or otherwise) right there in the tool. If they use another version you will see that and you can press 1 button to update your addons to the same version. This is why its good with ACE. When the tool is setup all you need to do is click "check for addons" and "download addons", and thus ACE or any other addons youve chosen will update.

EDIT:
Kellys Heroes mod list and server information: http://forums.bistudio.com/showpost.php?p=1561702&postcount=27

EDIT2:
1. Install Yoma's Addon Sync
2. Click NEW SERVER
3. add this URL (copy paste) to the "Auto config URL" box:
http://www.kellys-heroes.eu/updater/ArmA2ACE-Repository/ArmA2ACE-Repo.7z
4. click IMPORT SERVER
5. click SAVE

6. Click "Download Addons" tab
7. Click "Check for addons"
8. Tick everything ACE related and CBA
9. Click "Download Addons"

I think thats it. I use Six Updater but went through this to help...

AddonSync can be used for two purposes.

1- MP - synchronizing your addons with the ones in your clan/fav server.
2- SP - Downloading/Updating Community Addons Mods.

It is basicly downloading addons from a server that hosts/mirrors them. Note that the server you are using must update its repo regularly or you'll download old versions or won't be able to update to latest. If you'll use it for ACE ensure that the server you are using is updating regularly. KH is updating to every new release, some servers are updating once a week so use the one that suits your needs.

So in BI Forums you can find links to many servers' repositories as well as couple of ones listed as default within the application.

Just another quick question while I remember....

I currently use "ArmA2 Launcher" - a small window that scans my game dir for @directories and you can tick / untick the mods you want it to run.

Will this tool replace that ArmA2 launcher or will both run together?

Cross
Feb 9 2010, 12:27
YAS only downloads and creates modfolders in ArmA2 directory. Also it has a launcher in it for server listing and quick launch. It does not replace anything.
You can use any method (shortcut/any other launcher) once you download/update mods, if you don't want to use the launcher in it.

I managed to get two servers in the top tab list, don't know how I did it though :) Perhaps it could be more intuitive?
Downloading ACE now :) Albeit slowly, server must be quite busy.

Update - Ticking the mod on the left window selects a load of them in the right window which it proceeds to download.
Trouble is that a LOT of them returned (404) Not Found and have been skipped (97 of them so far).... Any ideas please?

Feb 10 2010, 05:31
I tried again this morning to download the missing ACE files, but they're all still 404.

I tried to launch ArmA2 anyway to see what happened but an error with CBA was thrown up, so I thought I'd use the Addon Installer to re-download CBA in case something had changed - well it started downloading... something, but the filename isn't part of CBA! When I checked the file list it has ticked about 600 items, none of which I've asked it to. Whats happening here please? (I restarted the software and the same issue exists).

It is a bug apparently..it tries to download even though you have not selected.

Solution until fixed:
Do not press "check for addons" after selecting mods on the left panel.

To re-check
right click on left panel and clear selection
check for addons
make your selection on the left panel (do not check addons after making selection)
start download

By the way why do you have ACE and Community Mods in the same list.. If you are using the "Event Server" DONT...it is not updated properly.

You need to have separate ACE and Community servers

Checking a folder in left pane will preselect them.
Rightclick the left pane for deselect all.
By default no folder is "selected" but in fact the entire repo is then selected.

The point of a repo is to get a set of files, not 2-3 files ;-)
The bug you complained about should be fixed in version 1.0.49

There is no point in clicking the check for addons button 5 times in a row.

Hi Yoma,

first, thanks for such a great tool !
I just have two questions:

1. If i click at "standart servers" i dont get a list anymore, if i click "Get Servers" i get a Error that says "cant get server table", can you help ?

2. I downloaded the new version but it looks like a new installation, not a update. So is there a way to keep my settings ?

1) My host seems to be having a problem :D It should get fixed asap.
2) Every new version will be a "new installation", you'll get to keep all the configured servers, but unfortunately "settings" will indeed be reset.
Fortunately the most important ones get autodetected so you'll only need to tick a minor amount of things.

Glad you like the tool!

Hi Yoma ;)

currently, there is no possibility to delete the missions files (into the MPmissions folder) with your command "Delete Extra File" (after made an addons sync), i must delete them manually.

Is there a possibility to fix that in your next release ?

in advance, thx mate

For addonsync important default arma folders are considered "protected".
This is to avoid accidents (like erasing the default campaign, missions, blabla)
I'm not sure but isn't it possible to add a subfolder MPMissions in an addons folder? (something like "MyFantasticModSet\MPmissions")
It might work on that. (should test it)

The MPMissions folder is empty by default, unlike Arma1, so maybe it should not be protected ?

Next version will have a slightly altered behaviour allow to delete extra files in the arma2/missions or arma2/mpmissions folders.
For arma1 the behaviour will stay the same.

This one will allow for userprofile names with characters that are urlencoded by BIS. (so you don't get stuff like Name%20With%20Space)
Feature #696: Created specific YAS uri's so you can have the tool import a .YAS file straight from browser (a bit like Teamspeak)
What this will allow is for admins to make specially crafted urls like
yashttp://www.mydomain.com/myrepo.yas
or
yasftp://www.mydomain.com/myrepo.yas

Then all a user needs to do is install addonsync and click on the link, the tool will open up and ask to import the servers. Works a bit like the teamspeak URI links.

Feature #7153: Bundle server mod lines with YAS file
This feature will allow server admins to set a required addon string and an optional addonstring. On the launch game panel, people can then click "required" or "required+optional" before launching the game.

We used the following AutoConfig-File:

As far i dont know how the repository-Files are created, i dont know

There is anyway to see when the repo (or better, each file) was last updated?

You could try checking out the cache db.
The repo itself has no data on update dates.
Also i don't really believe in date/version based repo update stuff.
Example:
-You update your repo, repo says it's version x updated on y
-You then (or some other updater tool, other server using the same folder, blabla) change files on your disk.

The repo file nor any cached date based stuff will be able to tell any difference between the actual situation on disk or the situation the tool thinks it should be.

For avoiding all this kind of stuff i advise to
-first sync your repo and verify you are truly in sync.
-then play on the server.

This method has proven to be quite effective + doesn't take too much time either.

I've been doing some tests on porting the autorepositorybuilder to Linux (using Mono 2.6.3 on Ubuntu).
This seems to work better then i ever expected.
I will soon need some people to do some testing building repositories on linux servers.

Requirements will be:
-you have to have full admin access to your server (as with the windows tool)
-mono 2.6.3 needs to be installed (there are various great tutorials on the net, i might include one for Ubuntu)
-7zip needs to be installed, and a copy of the 7z binary should be placed in the application's folder.

Calculating checksums will be a tad slower then on windows as i cannot easily port the cache db feature.

I don't know wether creating sign files will work, don't know if BIS has sign file exe's ported to Linux. If anyone has more info on this, help would be appreciated.

hello yoma,

is it possible to delete all the red "NewLocal" files with one click ? I upload for my community the ACE mod and there with every new release there are around 250 new .bisign files and the old ones must be deleted with single click on the "remove file" button. It would be really nice to mark all red "NewLocal" files at once.

its only a comfort thing i now :) but it would be nice to have.

Great tool!

I think what you're doing is totally unneeded: the files that are not on your local disk will be called "removed" in comparing in the upload window.
They will automatically not be included in the repo file you're building.

Yes files that are no longer needed stay in your repository but because they are not listed in the URL they are just place holders and they will not show up. So you don't need to clean it up every time you update the repo.

If you are using YAS/FTP to upload files onto your server and want to clear up those unused files there, you can try the method below where you'll need to have a separate servertab and a removal process that requires FTP access.
This is a long method but I guess you can do it once a month or so.

After you update the Repo on your server using YAS....

1- Create a mirror of the YAS repository in your local machine. You'll need to do this only once as you'll see this server in your favourites later.
a-Create a new server.
b-Enter ServerName (like LocalRepoCreation) & AutoconfigURL as in item e. Don't enter any other info.
c-Enter Input Folder (UploadAddons-Tab)
d-Enter a different OUTPUT FOLDER...such as C:\LocalYASRepository
e-Enter AutoconfigURL as "file:///C\LocalYASRepository\LocalURL.7z" and copy the same address to the URL field in Server-Tab
f-Make sure option "Clear output folder on build" is selected(ticked)

UPDATE PROCESS
2- Delete everything under the local repo folder - C:\LocalYASRepository
3- Open the LocalRepoCreation Server. In YAS UploadAddons, select folder, mods and files.
4- Compare list. It will say download failed and url not found. Its OK. we dont need it.
5- Build Repo (It will take a bit of time as it will zip all the files from scratch.)

FTP-UPLOAD PHASE
6- Go to you your new repo folder C:\LocalYASRepository
7- Delete the autoconfig URL -> "LocalURL.7z" we do not want to upload/use this file.
8- Download CoreFTP Lite. Connect to your server on the right pane and browse to your remote Repository. Browse to local repo on the left pane
9- Do Compare/Sync by rightlicking on blank area on either pane.
10 - Select only "Delete unused files" in the middle.
11- Click Compare on the left
12- Click Synchronize on the left
Buttons on the left takes the left pane as anchor and compares right pane to the left. It then adds to / deletes from right pane which is the remote folder.
***If it asks for Adding files click NO. You just want to delete.

I suppose it does but not sure if it automatically does it for sub folders, just check. If it doesn't, then do the synchronization for each sub folder.

Hi Yoma! Thanks for the great tool, however I have one little question:
I dont know if this has been asked before, but are you going to add gunzip support for this tool, so we could use it on our Linux server?

Why not install 7zip on your linux?
Worked fine under Ubuntu (i'm not really a linux freak but i think 7zip is readily available for most distro's?)
By the way you'll also need the latest stable mono release.
(check the readme.txt that's included with the linux repo builder)
If you need help i can try, but again i'm in no way a linux buff :)

We are planning to use our server as database to update mods for each team member, at the moment server updates ACE with ACE update script for Linux which I think.. uses rsync.

Now the problem is that we would need to get our linux server to use 7zip packages so we could update ACE or whatever mods we are using from our own server. Then everyone would have exactly same versions

So is there a way to get the tool to change pack type or do you know if there's allready a server somewhere where we could get ACE packed with 7zip, for linux?

I hope you understand what i ment :)

I think i understand what you mean.
You want to use the base downloaded gzip files from sixupdater directly for addonsync.
At the moment this is not supported.
However, the linux thingy i made can be scripted to take input folders and build it into an AddonSync repo.
So you could update through six, then build your addonsync repo by script.
You could also look into making your own repo for sixupdater?

Enhancements i could provide in some undefined, if ever, future could be:

-Have addonsync download commandline for building repositories, this way you could download directly from another addonsync repo.

-Have addonsync download repository x without decompressing, merge that repo with your own custom files. (this is a lot harder to implement but should be possible)

Also do consider that gzip is a lot larger then 7z files...

There is a yomatools ace mirror (KH ace mirror in default servers), you could download stuff uncompressed from there.

Was there a problem on Kellys server with the last ACE update?..

Alot of us are getting problems using missions that is ACE dependent..
Vehicles missing and other stuff...

I cant handle six so i allways use YAS, but after connecting and dl Ace346 at
Kellys no new versions appear..

I believe it was a general problem with six-updater usage. At least KH repo shows same symptoms as described in this DH ticket http://dev-heaven.net/issues/10400
