View Full Version : US Army 2009 Units
Binkowski
Aug 30 2009, 20:44
Here's something that some of you may have been following for awhile. Well here it is, the first public beta release of my US Army Units for ArmA2. I have tried my hardest to replicate what we actually wear in the field, using my uniform and battle rattle as a reference.

Currently, this is my first public beta release for ArmA2. So, naturally, these are not bug free, there may be bugs that I have not noticed and if you do notice them, feel free to inform me. Eventually down the road when I have more time I will increase the quality etc etc. This is more of a, preview, of what's to come in the future.
Yes this addon is signed for multiplayer.
Yes the Server Key is included.
Mirrors appreciated!
To anyone who mirrors this, please update the images with the larger images that are provided. Thank you.
W0lle kindly took the time to make a mission for you to test these with, it is very well made and I recommend trying it out! All credit goes to W0lle.
No, this Addon is not perfect and has it's bugs. For example, not all of my RVMATS are using the new ArmA2 RVMATS, notice I said "not all", most of them do, a few do not. Just be aware.

Good job, downloading right now.
Also, I don't know much on the US Army's camos, but do they also wear that camo in woodland areas as well as sandy areas? (Generally asking this and not trying to bash on your work in a snidey way)
Binkowski
Aug 30 2009, 20:51
Yes we wear the ACU's, it's a universal camo we wear in all environments.

Not working here, maybe im doing something wrong, I put it in my addon folder that I made, i called it @<hidden> and inside i put the two files needed, inside AddOn folder of course, when i join a multiplayer match all the players still are with the Marine uniform, am i missing something?
Note: Also do we have to add "beta" to the shortcut when we are running the beta with the rest of the addons? I've a lot of different stories.

I do not have a replacement pack made for the units yet. That will come in the next release. For now, you will only be able to use them in your missions unfortunately. I may actually write the replacement pack tonight and get it out to you guys. Until then, check them out in the editor.

While playing as the fireteam leader, if you look down in first-person you'll notice that your right leg looks a little.. stretched. Although it doesn't happen in third-person. That may be something to do with the RVT thingy that you mentioned.

Most excellent... downloading now.
I have only one (little) complaint besides that they are under USMC: The textures are a bit... weird. As if somone (ab)used the sharpen filter in Photoshop. ;)
No big thing but something you can clearly see if you are close to them.

Yeah I used the sharpen filter in PS because, before I used the sharpen filter, the textures appeared blurry, to the point where you couldn't even see the pattern, it just looked like one big blur. Until I figure that out I'll have to use the sharpen filter unfortunately.

Finally the good ol units I used to use all the time in arma 1. One question though, will future versions have the new arma 2 face model so they can blink, mouth moves and have the famous mouth open eyes closed death face? since the original arma 1 faces are stiff and can't even blink now.
Or will you need more MLODs and such for the new faces.

I belive it is possible to copy the Heads and Hands to these Units from the BI Character Example Model to have this feature.

MLOD's are out, just didn't have time to replace every head on every unit. Will do that in future updates.
Rifleman 2 has a yellow glove partially visible inside his right hand.

Binkowski, if you look on the last pic you posted there's a little white edging to the characters.
The white edging is part of the game AFAIK, Binkowski isnt the only one to get it, try it with the marines and see what happens (have smoke or some such in the background).
Nice work on these! Will DL later (if my internet will let me lol), have you tried to get the new heads on? I had a quick look and it seems to be alot more than the simple copy/paste i was hoping for :)

No, when you build up your addon you create a secound low poly model (LOD) from wich arma2 calculate the shodow.

The shadow is generated from the Shadow LODs on the model, in this you AFAIK cant change the intensity of the shadow itself.
Do you mean the shading on the model or the casting of the shadow onto the ground?

Yeah I'll try to do that on the next release. Fixing the RVMATS is one of my biggest issues right now. I'll make sure to get that done! As well as fix the handbug on the AR, adding the new ArmA2 heads (already done). Not sure when I'll release this new update though.

Sep 2 2009, 14:38
We are in no way shifting to Multicam pattern for the main stream US Army. Rangers and SpecOps have the choice of buying Multicam for deployment. Even if Congress decided to order the switch, we just don't have the money to do it and it takes time to switch. In the future (like 4+ years out), we will be switching camo pattern, that is true, becuase ARPAT doesn't work anywhere and it was a flop, but the Army has too much invested in ARPAT equipment.

Also, I'm not a fan of multicam (God forbid.) but, that's just me. It'll take awhile for me to get used to this new pattern, I MAY make my rangers in multicam, but I am doubtful. I'm not even sure if I will continue with them.

No they are not. I removed all the gloves and replaced them with the new ArmA2 hands, however on the Automatic Rifleman there is a known handbug if you look at his hands in first person. This has been fixed and will be released soon.

I'll ponder on that thought for awhile. I like my addons to be as realistic as possible, and would hate to see a US Army soldier wearing a USMC ruck, it just doesn't match. Anyway, I'll keep that in mind for the next release.

The helmets look different because they are :) USMC use the Lightweight helmet (almost visually the same as the old PASGT) but the US Army uses the ACH which is much smaller.
I think Binkowski did use Cameron McDonald's textures too.

I use the IOTV / IBA system. Not just IBA, we also wear the IOTV although it isn't as common as the IBA.

I know this, I wear the IBA, although I'd prefer to use the IOTV, but the thing is. The IOTV is given to troops in Afghanistan. (Some, not all) SO not every single troop uses the IBA. Also, my units have a mix and variety.

AnimalMother92 I totally agree, that'd be awesome! But I think modelling and texturing that single unit would take the same time as doing whole US Army 2009 over again from scratch.

Try the SP_BlueOctoberv1 in my Nostalgia pack, W0lle did a good job on the current CO16 mission. Anyway, YES AnimalMother I would LOVE to do that, but like Cole said, it would be like re-doing everything but you know, I'm always up for a challenge.

Hi Binkowski thanks for a new Version :-)
Your addon is getting better every day :yay:
I have an ask about the googles of the Automatic Machingunner, @<hidden> me they are shiney, so shiney that when the MGGunner stand in the Shadow you see the googles in 100km away, can you reduce this or is it a grafical bug by my Graficcard
Here an Picture of what i mean:
http://s2.imgimg.de/thumbs/Unbenannt42fdf4b4JPG.jpg (http://www.imgimg.de/bild_Unbenannt42fdf4b4JPG.jpg.html)
Maybe you can make it more transparent or less shiney would be awesome :)

@<hidden>
No it's not a graphical bug, It must be something to do with my old sklo-pass.rvmat file, I'll try to fix this for next version! Thank you for reporting it!

While everyone is on the backpacks....
As with in ARMA 1 the backpacks appear to "wobble" when the player runs whereas if you look at the ARMA 2 backpacks the dont (move as a whole).
Hopefully that makes sense but if you want to get it like the ARMA 2 ones remove ALL the selections for the backpack and add it only to Spine2 (add the part of the strap that is attatched to the backpack too).
If that needs more explaining just say :)

Thanks Matt, I just updated my LODs and am going to test them and see what the result is, I've also updated the RVMATS, however I'm still needing some help with texturing. If anyone wants to help, please PM me!
Perfect, and very nice US army in the lastest style of uniform! Only wish is whether you could add some officers in next patch? Such as lieutant, Junior Lieutant or captain and won't be difficult to do that I think. By way, have you changed ARMA1 hands to ARMA2 from BIS example models? I also tried to do that for some personal models but got a very serious problem after copying ARAM2 hands and pasting them on ARMA1. You could only see your foot after such alteration. Maybe you could give some suggestions to fix such issue?

Thank you, yes I do plan on adding officers into the next release, probably platoon and company commanders (2LT, 1LT, CPT) also, yes I have changed the hands to the current ArmA2 models, no problems here on my end. Make sure you have everything correct, and you path the RVMATS and textures correctly.

hey Binkowski, perhaps you could talk to Schnapsdrosel in regards to that door gunner unit. I know that he has done a pilot's visor and mask for his Mercs addon:
http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=80944 (see the 2nd pic)
With a bit of tweaking of the mask (removing hose etc) you could probably create that unit (I'm no expert in this matter). I guess I was just thinking that combining his pilot head and your ACU body would be pretty damn sweet. :)

Anyway, Binkowski in case you are up for an Air Warrior type of pilot/crew, please contact me. I have a helmet that needs a body :p .

I'm not sure if any else has noticed this but I've been getting a ton of CTD's while playing Blue October, which is a damn fun mission by the way. The game just crashes but there's no errors after the CTD. But when I open up the .rpt file I have an "out of memory" error. This is quite odd for me because I just don't ever see this error during my A2 time. It ain't my system cause is well past any recommendations and until I played this mission and DL'd the newest ACU version, had not had any problems.
I'm not sure if it has to do with this AddOn or mission specific or something else entirely but I wanted to bring this up. I encounter this CTD every few minutes during the mission and just before it happens I get a slow down in the game.
Another thing I've recently noticed is some textures going away or loading very slowly on certain team members during this mission. I'm using the most current beta build but it also happens on v1.03.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Besides this I'm diggin' having the Army in A2 but don't tell anyone. Great job Binkowski and thanks to Wolle for the mission. Not sure what that guy was talking about, it's pretty damn fun.

When you fight against those terrorists, what supporting vehicles you really use in those actual actions generally? I think you won't take Bradley AFV as such things? Now in game, I just give your soldiers Hamma cars to make such operations.

Depends where you are fighting at: In Iraq, HMMWVs, MRAPs, Bradleys, Strykers, Abrams are very common in support operations. In Afghanistan, the roads that can support heavy vehicles are few and helicopters are more commonly used along with HMMWVs and foot movements.

I'm very fond of the ACUPAT camo. It gives the army a unique look away from the other branches. Where before the Digital design was sent out both marines and army were pretty identical. Hopefully the change from ACUPAT to something else will be a very long time. I'm also fond of the camo design the US army uses in Battlefield BC. Which looks like it uses an octagonal pattern with 3 or 4 different shades of forest green.

The uniform doesn't work as designed. The purpose of the uniform is to increase the difficulty of being spotted by the enemy, not look different than other branches of the military. All branches should adopt the same pattern. Wear different insignia if they like, but wear the same uniform. Especially the Army and Marines since they're in the same places doing the same thing.
I hope they get rid of the ACU as fast as possible.
Yeah, one doesn't need to be an expert in camouflage to realize that wearing this (http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b179/happo_no_giri/ACU2_low.jpg) is going to cause you problems.

The only thing that worked better than my tri-color DCUs was the Marine's desert pattern. We'll see if Multicam beats the new UCP-Delta pattern, but I doubt that the Army will switch to the Crye pattern. The uniforms are almost double the cost of ACUs (which were almost double the cost of BDUs...) and I'm sure some crony is having his palms greased for getting the UCP approved.
I remember reading somewhere that there was a public tender competition for the camo. The camo that eventually became UCP was consistently voted the worst one in all tests, yet they decided to ignore the better ones and just modify the dud one...

So far, I've encountered one mission where some of my AI mates are wearing the old ACUs and some are wearing your new ones. The proper M4MWS, M4 ACOG with no GL, M4 with Grenade Launcher and M68 etc. Basically swapping of the attachments. I'm a realism nut. Plus, they don't have the MWS modeled properly.

sweet! no complaints about more M4s. kinda reminds me of changing your M4MWS loadout back in America's Army 2. A couple of possible weapons, dunno if this could be done: M16/M4 with EOTech (no GL), and a 240 bravo w/ a scope :D

Or in the future you make a 2012 version of US army soldiers have the XM-25 rifle
http://www.newsweek.com/id/215823 shown on # 6 supposedly its a go. This reminds me of the old OICW weapons that were cancelled.

hey binkovski.
i have a question about the server bikeys.
all of the addons of yours, have the same bink.bikey. i dont know, maybe i put them in the wrong place (arma 2 folder\keys). if thats correct, how do i keep OMOn and US army keys in the same folder under same name? if thats incorrect, where do i put them? i tried to search the net, but didnt find anything with instracions.
thanks a lot.

Dang it, I would love to use those units :( But It would be until i get back to the states and upgrade my computer. I cant play OpFlashpoint much less Arma II on this thing. But you did a great job in ARMA with the ACU uniforms, I know you have done a great job with these. One question though, are you including a Drill Sarg'n in any of these mods? I know there are no drill sergeants on the battlefield but it might be good as an ARSO or a RSO position on a Usermade Range. Its just a thought. Oh if the OPSEC police come for me again, :p :yay:

for sake of realism - concerning M240B and M240B Elcan - i made them and you can have them for this addon :)
Just a little off-topic. When I trying to make up a US infantry squad in game, just wonder whether it should be in 9 soldiers or 10 or even more? I think it might be 9 in realism? One squad leader with two fire teams in four soldiers for each?

If I remember correctly in the USMC there is a squad leader plus 2 fire teams making it 9 in a squad. In the U.S.Army the squad leader is part of a fire team. So there be should rather 8 or 12 soldiers in a squad.

There's even talk of scrapping the current ACU camo. Contenders include Multicam, and a MARPAT-esque updated version (http://soldiersystems.net/blog1/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/09-14-2009-ucp-delta-edit.jpg) of the current camo.
That last one there looks like a hunters camo, I hope it doesn't win. The current one looks so nice and unique.

When BIS announced Arrowhead I was tempted to stop all this, and just make you guys wait for Arrowhead, but then I remembered what happened with QG and all that jazz. I wanted people to have Army units even if they don't purchase Arrowhead, hopefully my units can be up to par and possibly even better / more realistic than the ones in Arrowhead.

Sounds excellent. Always thought BIS were extremely lazy when it came to attachments and the M4/M16
I mean the models are already there (the silencer, ACOG, M68, PEQ-1, M203L)
So why not give us more combinations?
Is there going to be a silenced M4MWS with 203 and ACOG? :D:eek:

Good luck with that, considering that a lot of the models and bastextures you used in your units are about 3 years old by now.

repeat addmagazine as much as you want for more clips. this will start the unit with the weapon youve chosen in his hands and loaded equipped with ammo.

I get this problem at any distance I think, outstanding units though!
Yeah, I can confirim muzzle flash being visible at distance even when not firing (LODs issue probably?). Also would be good if the guns could get all those fancy animations and probably a slightly more hi-res scope view for the M240!
Apart from that, all the new stuff is looking great! :)
Edit: Now we just need those Darth Vader lookalike door gunners (http://forums.bistudio.com/showpost.php?p=1431315&postcount=93) to make it evil...
