View Full Version : Chernarussian Red Army troops

Here's a little addOn I made for the OPFOR side. It's based on one of the alternative endings of the Harvest Red campaign, when...
...Razor team fails and the ChDKZ takes control of Chernarus and the army was reorganized, standardized and given better gear.

The archieve also contains an optional replacement addOn, which replaces the original OPFOR insurgents (ChDKZ) with these troops.
Zipper5 has kindly built a demo mission for this addOn too, which you can download from the link below.
Enjoy.

Nice, but sad to see these Eggshells on their heads again ^^
I don't know if I am the only one but the russian helmets look kind of hilarious.
It's not the helmet itself but it's too thin ingame and it looks strange.
Could you maybe model them thicker like in that picture here ?
http://www.dradio.de/images/46025/portrait/
That's just a question I don't know if it's possible to edit the helmets.
But right now the thin borders make them look like cheap iron sheet whatever Eggshell :D

Aug 29 2009, 20:50
Granted, the helmets that the russians have in game are just steel pot helmets, it makes sense that they are so thin :)

Great idea and great units Rellikki. As always. Great to see some units that fit ArmA 2 background, especially "eastern" ones :)

Thanks for the comments everyone. Also, thanks for the mirrors. I finally could bother to update my website. The link in the first post has been updated, which leads into my website, where I'll be listing the provided mirrors to the addOn for you to download. You can also find my (possible) future work in there, if you keep an eye out.
Very nice and like that helmet model. Maybe just change the logo on arm and could make them the Soviet army in late uniform style.
Sorry for being a little offtopic here, but do you also consider porting your great RACS and SLA units in ArmA 2 as we can "enjoy" conflicts in Sahrani again ? :)

@<hidden>
I don't really have interest to make Soviet army units, but if you're looking forward for some, you should keep an eye out for the P85 mod, whose makers, as far as I know, have plans to move to ARMA 2. I'm sure they'd do a better job at making Soviet army troops than me.
@<hidden>
I haven't really considered it and can't say for sure.
@<hidden>
I've managed to make use of the ArmA 1 sample models to create some different looking units for the addOn. So far I managed to make a soldier with rolled up sleeves, which seems to work perfectly without any screwed up hands or anything, which I've read about when some people tried to convert ArmA 1 models to ARMA 2.

Sure. :)
This addOn replaces the BIS ChDKZ insurgents with my Chernarussian Red Army troops. All signed and multiplayer compatible. Requires the troops addOn itself, of course. Thanks to zGuba for solving a little issue on the config. I had a hard time getting this to work.

Yes, apparently BIS got inspiration to Lopotev from Behind Enemy Lines, just like many other game developers too. Does anyone know if that's somekind of joke or something? :p
@<hidden>
When it's done. ;)
@<hidden>
I took the comments about the helmet into account and tried to rework on it a little. It's based on the SLA helmet from ArmA. Just a little reshaped and recolored to represent the Russian Ssh68 steel helmet, which, apparently, the original helmet was representing. I don't know if it looks any better now, but personally I think it's a big improvement quality wise:
http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/3420/helm1.th.jpg (http://img269.imageshack.us/i/helm1.jpg/) http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/2443/helm2.th.jpg (http://img228.imageshack.us/i/helm2.jpg/)
The sharpest persons might also notice the lack of the load bearing vests with the soldiers. That's another variant of them I was planning. It's not a big chance, but hey, it's variety.
O yeah, Vladimir Mashkov is a good russian actor. "Piranha" (2006).

N/P. Seriously though its probably not worth worrying about.
I remember when I was tweaking the textures or my Arma copy of QG to make the partisan types look a little more worn I just did a lighten/desaturate in Photoshop, its quick & dirty but it makes them look a little more worn at least.
Mind you my knowledge about texturing would be about 5/8ths of fuckall and you're the dude who made these in the first place so I'm sure you knew all that already. :)

I'll be soon releasing what I've done so far, so you don't need to wait forever because of my lazyness and also because of the little error message in the mission editor, caused by the ARMA 2 patch v.1.04 with my addOn. The update will contain those new helmets which I showed earlier and also the soldiers with rolled up sleeves for a little bit of variation. I've also done some other slight optimizing and improving on the models and textures. This will, however, not probably be the last update - I'm still not fully satisfied with the addOn and I'm hoping to update it even more and maybe add some more different looking content into it.
At the moment I'm looking for some translators for a few displaynames for some unique unit classes, which BIS doesn't have translations for on their stringtable files. I've got most of the translations sorted out so far, but I'm still missing some Italian, Polish, Russian and Hungarian translations. If you can speak any of the mentioned languages and would be able to help, please contact me and I'll send what needs translating. Just a few tiny lines. :)

Rellikki
Sep 22 2009, 19:22
The replacement addOn is optional and by default these units are just a seperate addition in the mission editor, just like any other addOn. :) So no, they won't replace default units, unless you install the optional replacement addOn.
I will contact you and we'll see if we can work something out.
idk if u received my pm's....back on topic did u mean i have to avoid some files of your addon?

Sep 22 2009, 19:56
Thanks for the translations.
You only need to avoid downloading the archieve named Relli_CRA_repl. That's what contains the replacement addOn. Do not download and install that, unless you want the original game models replaced. If you've already installed it, simply remove the relli_cra_repl.pbo file from your addOns folder.
Download the archieve named Relli_CRA. That's what contains the addOn itself, no replacements. You can find it from my website (http://rellikki.armaholic.eu/addons/cra.html) under "Mirrors:". I hope you understand it now. :)

Here's the update finally.
http://rellikki.armaholic.eu/addons/pics/cra11sb.jpg (http://rellikki.armaholic.eu/addons/pics/cra11.jpg) http://rellikki.armaholic.eu/addons/pics/cra12sb.jpg (http://rellikki.armaholic.eu/addons/pics/cra12.jpg)
Major changes are as follows:
- Added some variency between the characters
- Improved textures and models
- New classes: APC Crewman, Tank Crewman and Pilot
- Fixed the faction error caused in the game patch v.1.04
This update contains those new helmets and soldiers with rolled up sleeves which I've been showing, to add some variency to the characters. I've also improved the textures and models generally some bit too.
As per special request from Cole, I've made two configs for the addOn: English config and multilanguage config. The reason for this slightly weird system is to support owners of non-multilanguage ARMA 2 copy, who wish to use this addOn with English displaynames, but cannot set it in the game's options.
I'd like to thank all the translators (listed below), who helped me to translate the units' displaynames into all the game's official languages in the multilanguage config and also to correct some of the vanilla game translations.
The archieve also contains an optional replacement addOn, which replaces the original OPFOR insurgent troops (ChDKZ) with my addOn.
More info in the readme.
Credits:
- BIS, Ebud and CWR Mod for the base models and textures
- Aelin, Benoist, Cervo, Cole, Diversant, Old Bear, SaS TrooP and The.D for translations of the displaynames to different languages

Thanks for the comments. I'm also glad to hear the English / multilanguage config has proven useful. It first sounded like a silly idea to me, but it seems like there are a lot of people out there who impatiently bought a copy of the game which doesn't support English.

I don't think so. The reed camo pattern which the units are wearing was only adapted, as far as I know, only after some years from the fall of the Soviet Union, for the use of Russian MVD troops. It's a little similiar to the camo which Soviets adapted in the later years, but not quite.
Superb update (and language configs, heh), thanks Rellikki! Great units to play around with.

Arm2cat, I took the KLMK pattern camouflage from the SLA in ARMA 2 mod, and put it on the CRA troops for personal use, you could use that as soviets if you want, its pretty easy to do, all you need to do is unpbo CRA and SLA pbos and change and rename the right texture files.

I might release another upgrade in the future, with even more different unit classes and other changes. Don't expect it anytime soon though, because it requires a lot of work and I have other projects in plans too.
I have a lot of ideas in my mind for new content and to enhance the current troops too significantly. I will ensure 100% compatibility with the previous version though. Although I have a lot of plans for the CRA troops of my own, I'm still all open for new ideas too. :)

We had a similar problem with brake lights on some of our vehicles.
Having the textures and rvmats available on the P:\ drive when binarising the model, with the correct "\CA\wheeled...." paths as they'd have if loaded from BIS's .pbos fixed it for us.
