If you are making an addon, then yes you can make rifle magazines take up pistol mag slots. You can't make rifles use the pistol (or any other) slot though.

This is from arma(1) weapons config,find ammo for the weapon you want (e.g "class 30Rnd_545x39_AKSD: 30Rnd_545x39_AK") and add "type = 16;" line there.
